"I earnestly advise women of artistic tastes to train for the unworked field of modern photography. It seems to be especially adapted to them, and the few who have entered it are meeting a gratifying and profitable success." 💬 Born on this day in 1852, Gertrude Käsebier (née Stanton) was a pioneering photographer who advocated for other women to enter the profession. 🎂 At the age of 37, she enrolled at The Pratt Institute in New York (1889 -1893) to study painting, where she quickly distinguished herself as a pictorial photographer. She opened a studio on ‘Ladies Mile’, 5th Avenue in 1897, where she produced art portraits but also undertook commercial work. In 1902, Gertrude was a co-founder of the Photo-Secession group, which was dedicated to promoting photography as an art form. After a rift, she set up Pictorial Photographers of America in 1916 with Clarence White. Gertrude trained many women in photography as apprentices over the years, including Alice Austin (1862-1933) Alice Boughton (1866-1943), and the Parrish sisters Williamina (1879-1941) and Grace (1881 – 1954). So let’s focus on what’s important: God, family, friends, etc. Capture all the good times you had up to this point in your life. Develop from all the down times in life and learn from them. If things don’t work out, then take another shot at it or focus on something else. So if we take this message about something as simple as taking a picture, we can be a little happier. If you have a lot of negatives, I would simply toss them away, as we don’t need a lot of negativity in our lives. Partindo de antigos negativos de fotos de família, comecei com fita de cetim a tecer e tentar, numa busca impossível, agrupar imagens, forjando, no contra luz, pequenas ilhas da memória. Algumas imagens se apagaram dos negativos, como também da minha mente. Outras são lacunas mesmo. Não lembro e por certo não mais lembrarei. Last lift before a little R&R in Florida and picking Olivia up from school. Probably the last summer she will come home 😭 I am beyond excited to go to my happy place. A chair on the beach, waves lapping at my feet and legs, sun kissing my skin and of course a drink in my hand.
