🌟 **Foster Sunday Spotlight: Meet Shannon! 🌟** "I started volunteering at Harbor in December 2022 to give back to the shelter where I adopted my three fur babies and to step out of my comfort zone. 🐶🐾 In May 2023, when there was a desperate need for dog fosters, I began fostering dogs. 🏠💕 So far, I have fostered 13 dogs, from just a few days to several months. Fostering has made me a better dog mom. 🐕 I’ve learned so much, like how to hold a leash properly! 🐾 One of the most rewarding experiences was caring for a little dog named Zazu, rescued from a puppy mill. Zazu was terrified to walk on grass, but by the time he was adopted, he was running around the yard with joy. 🌿🐕 My dog roommates make sure I get my exercise every day. I can’t throw a ball to save my life, so I kick a slightly deflated soccer ball around the yard. ⚽️🐾 Many fosters end up with a 'foster fail' at some point, and I was no exception. It’s three years today since Miss L joined our family. I was looking back at some of my earliest pictures of her this morning and she was so tiny and exhausted and scared. Our hydrocephalus girls Joob Joob and Ducky. If you’ve been around here awhile you’ve seen these two grow up! They are both still doing amazing and loving life. If you aren’t familiar with hydrocephalus it is a build up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inside the skull, which can lead to pressure on the brain and usually gives them the dome shaped heads. CSF is the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord giving both nutrients and protection. Both girls take medicine daily to help with any pressure on the brain. They both have their own ‘hydroisms’ or little quirks. Hydro pup’s definitely have our heart around here! They don’t alway have the longest lives, but when we say they are worth it- we absolutely mean it. Hydro pups are some of the most precious creatures we have ever know. We’ve got a few more hydro babes in our rescue, each just total loves. Two days before Christmas, the family kicked her out, angry that she wasn’t a “good guard dog.” Tuzza is too gentle, quiet, and meek, and her family discarded her for it. You’d think by this point, we’ve seen and heard it all, but this is a new one.😒 Tuzza is 45 pounds of sweetness; she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. She’s dog-friendly, excellent on a leash, and has a serene demeanor and happy spirit. We need someone to turn her frown upside down. Tuzza lost her home, left the refuge, flew to the States, and landed in boarding. She is on this weekend’s transport to our Center and needs a foster or forever family to help get her smile back. FOSTER FOUND🐾BLAZIN’ BENNY💙💙🔥☄️🐦🔥🧯🚒We are calling this roughly one year old doodle Blazin’ Benny. He is about 40 pounds of love. He comes from an abusive home in the Yucaipa area where he was dumped. He will need vet services as he has never been, no vaccines, unaltered and a known history of a fractured hip. He has lots of puppy energy and so far loves balls. He will need work with training but seems eager to please. He is excited to meet and greet any other dogs and humans but not sure about other animals. Despite coming from an abusive home he has not shown any signs of aggressive behaviors. He appears to be some kind of wolfhound or terrier doodle. His coat is light but needs TLC. 🌟 Paddy’s happy ending (formerly Bilbo) 🌟 Bilbo's early life was rough and he is still only a pup. He was given up by his owner, who struggled to care for him, and had spent most of his days locked in a crate, suffering from bad skin and urine scalds. When he arrived with us, it was clear he needed some love and attention to get back to full health. Our amazing volunteers took him on walks, and it was heartbreaking to see him experiencing the world for the first time. Bilbo needed a dedicated foster home, and that's when Avani and Dean stepped in. They drove 3 hours to meet him and took him home, determined to build up his health and confidence. After 3 weeks of fostering, they knew they couldn't let him go and officially adopted him. Now known as Paddy, he enjoys daily walks and has a crate that's only a bed with an open door to come and go as he pleases. 🐾❤️ People like Avani and Dean change the lives of dogs who have never known love. We could create more happy endings for dogs by securing additional funds to open our own kennels, allowing us to take in more dogs in need. Today has been…. A DAY. Every day in rescue is so challenging and stressful and so many dogs need saving. We need fosters and funding. We are a NEW rescue, we have limited resources, AND can only do so much. BUT this brought me that small glimmer of hope that keeps you going. This dog was chained to a pole (swipe) and was abandoned by his “owners” also very sure he was abused. He was in the euthanasia room at MAS waiting to DIE after HE had been failed over and over again. He has been so scared and shut down the whole time we’ve had him in the rescue. Today, he moved into a foster home with this sweet little boy. Look at his smile, look at his joy. He finally has hope and a purpose. 😭😭 This is why we do what we do. For every 100 defeated moments, there is a win that makes it ALL worth it. That’s this moment. This foster stepped up and the little boy will SAVE this dog. #NFCM • Day 16 • Single Foster Parenting Parenting in general is hard. It’s worth it but hard. That’s the same with foster care… just hard in different ways. Parenting single can be even more difficult. You have to be the one to help regulate their emotions and your own. You have nobody to pass the baton to when things get tough. When you’re sick. When you’re dysregulated. When your kiddo is sick and you need to go to the store and get meds. Single parenting has left me with lots of decision fatigue. What’s best for your kiddo. What’s for dinner. What activities to sign them up for. Deciding consequences and rules & sticking with them. Single foster parenting has taught me so much though. It has taught me even more clearly how important community is and why God calls us to it. Although I don’t have someone immediately to support me through the hardships, there are people who are willing to step in however possible. Single foster parenting is hard. But I wouldn’t trade it. I know the sacrifices and work I’m doing is bringing glory to God even in the hard times. Even when I feel like I’m doing nothing right. Although I wouldn’t trade it, there are so many things as a single foster parent I need to improve at. Some things I have learned and encourage single (foster) parents to do is…. • DO THINGS YOU LOVE. • USE YOUR RESPITE! I have not used my respite nearly as much a so should have. And breaks are important! My goal is to find a weekly or biweekly babysitter so that I can have a few hours to do something to fill myself. • FIND YOUR VILLAGE. Parenting takes a village… and especially when parenting kids with trauma! Find people who understand & can be there to support you through highs and lows. We don’t have a spouse to vent to at the end of the day… so having someone you can do that with id important! We aren’t called to carry this load alone! • REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Even when it feels like nobody understands. Someone isn’t there when you need it most….. God is! God is with you and He is there to give you the strength and grace to carry on.
