Open until July 2024, 'The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism' at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This major exhibition includes Roland Penrose's 1937 photograph of Ady Fidelin alongside her friends Lee Miller Nusch Eluard and Leonora Carrington. That same year, Ady Fidelin made history as the first Black model to appear in a major American fashion magazine. Like many at the time, the publisher of Harpers Bazaar, William Randolph Hearst, prohibited the use of Black models in his publications. Yet somehow, possibly with the help of Bazaar's pioneering editor Carmel Snow, a photograph of Ady, taken by her lover Man Ray, featured in the magazine's September 1937 issue. Ady would feature in over 400 photographs, paintings and drawings by Man Ray, as well as photographs by Lee Miller and Roland Penrose, such as this one. Despite the masses of documentation, it's only recently that Ady has been re-established in the narrative of art history. This photograph is included in the exhibition of over 160 works exploring the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life. What a grace it is to remember that we are not the center of the universe. I think this is part of what draws us to creation stories. In the Genesis narrative, humans are the final characters to step into the scene. The ocean and stars, the plants and animals are all created first, existing and thriving before we even show up. This proclaims the truth that while the natural world has lived—and can live—without humans, humans cannot live without the natural world. Road trucks and vans delivered goods to Dynon Road, that were then re-labelled by workers, such as myself, before they went into railway goods trucks for transport into regional Victoria or interstate. The labels' backing papers were usually just dropped on the platform and so collected accidental prints in dust as they mapped the daily impressions of the good's trucker's day on the job... Over the last few days, we've been spotlighting some of Lee Miller's street photograph of the Blitz. These were used for the book 'Grim Glory' which was published on this day in 1941. While many photographs were taken specifically for this publication, Lee had begun haunting the rubble-strewn streets of London long before... Titled 'Revenge on Culture' this image of destruction remains striking more than 80 years since it was taken. The stone woman’s medieval shield was not an effective defence against the bombs of the Luftwaffe! Seen through Lee Miller's camera lens, as she lies among the rubble, this mourner in stone becomes an allegory for the destruction of beauty and culture. Our current major exhibition 'The War at Home' covers Lee Miller's wartime photography on home soil, ranging from reportage shoots to fashion editorials in Vogue House, such as this one... When rationing on clothes was introduced in 1941, the limitations inspired innovation from many clothing retailers in Britain in order to retain and even expand their customer base. The government intervened in the mass manufacture of high street fashions with the arrival of the Utility clothing scheme in 1942. This also marked a change in how British Vogue presented fashion. No longer encouraging pre-war standards, features instead advised on the careful spending of clothing coupons and money on garments that would be useful in all seasons. British women were also encouraged to re-use, re-cycle and 'make do and mend!' Visit 'The War at Home' until 21 July, we're open on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. . . .
