A sea with ever-changing colours 🌈 From Arles, Vincent travelled to the seaside resort of Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. He wanted to see a really ‘blue sea’ and a really ‘blue sky’. To get there, he had to cross the Camargue, the marshland to the south-west of Arles. Since no trains ran to the small fishing village, he travelled by stagecoach, pulled by horses. 🐴. It was a slow and uncomfortable mode of transport. Lluis Masriera es uno de esos artistas multidisciplinares que lo mismo te diseñaba un escenario para una obra teatral 🎭 como te diseñaba las más exquisitas joyas 💍 de estilo art decó con un esmaltado que te quedas tiesa 😵. Pero aquí hemos venido a hablar de pintura 🖌️ y es que este barcelonés nacido en 1872 se caracterizó por el realismo, siempre íntimamente ligado con el modernismo. Recibió la influencia de su padre, Josep Masriera i Manovens, y su tío Francesc, unos de los más destacados representantes de la pintura de asunto de la época de la restauración (la pintura de historia que todos conocemos vaya 💁🏻♀️). A Bouquet and Landscape Maurits Niekerk (1871-1940) a Dutch Impressionist painter who spent much of his career in Belgium. From 1897-1893, he studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, then spent some time at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Maurits was introduced to the artists colony at Sint-Martens-Latem. He was impressed by the area and bought a small farm nearby, where he lived until 1903. He painted mainly landscapes and still-lifes, although he also painted interiors. Maurits Niekerk was also an art critic and a writer. He travelled extensively, making long visits to Germany and Italy. Later in his life he moved to Paris. He specialised in painting horses in Algeria but without giving in to the clichés of the genre, fantasias and other hunts. He preferred animals in the wild or in the fields and farms. In the Old Port is a statue of Lord Brougham. On his way to Italy in 1834, Brougham was blocked at the border because of a cholera epidemic. When he was forced to turn back he discovered the shores of Cannes. He then came across a the tiny fishing village of Cannes. Here he remained for the rest of his life. He worked on developing the town and bringing English aristocracy with him to Cannes. İstanbul’dan uzak kaldığım süre boyunca tuhaf bir şekilde İstanbul hakkında daha çok düşünür oldum. 2021 yılında üniversiteye başladığım günden beri bu şehre dair daha çok şey öğrenmek için içimde büyüyen bir istek duydum. Bu yolculuğum sırasında karşılaştığım insanlar, inip çıktığım yokuşlar, okuduğum kitaplar, ödev yazdığım kafeler, saatlerce arkadaşlarla sohbet ettiğim barlar, geçen zamanın ölçüsü sergiler, kartpostal topladığım sahaflar, kaçırdığım tramvaylar, otobüsler, vapurlar, restorasyonunun bitmesini dört gözle beklediğim yapılar, gözümün hep ortak bir nokta aradığı camiler, kiliseler ve sinagoglar bana ders kitaplarından öğrendiğim İstanbul’dan daha fazlasını öğretti. Beni en çok mutlu eden ise attığım her adımda kendi zamansal çizgimin benden önce o sokaktan, o caddeden ya da mekandan geçmiş insanların izleriyle çakışıyor olduğunu bilmemdi. Bu kişiler o anın gerekliliğine göre Orient Express ile İstanbul’a gelmiş bir on dokuzuncu yüzyıl Avrupalısı, on altıncı yüzyılda Osmanlıya sığınmış Venedikli bir kadın ya da Jüstinyen vebasında ölmüş bir Bizanslı olabilirdi. Ancak her zaman bu zamansal dolaşıklık duygusunu en çok hissettiğim yerler Bizans anıtlarını ağırlayan Fener-Balat sokaklarıydı. Havalar aynı şu anki gibi olduğunda kameramı alıp bu yapılarda kaybolmayı severdim. Kampüsten olabildiğince uzakta bu yapılarla baş başayken kendi iç sesimi dinlemek bana iyi gelirdi. İşte tam böyle Mayıs - Haziran günlerinde yaşadığım şehre bir kez daha aşık olurdum. Ders kitaplarında okuduğum o hükümdarlar, sanatkarlar ve diğer bütün “önemli” “önemsiz” insanlarla kendimi bir hissederdim. Bugün kendimi ait hissettiğim şehrin Bizans halinin başlangıcının bin altı yüz doksan dördüncü yıl dönümü. Bu vesileyle İstanbul özlemimi yazıya döküp benimle müşterek hislere sahip kişilere ulaşmak istedim. Evening Dress • ca. 1850-55 • silk, cotton • American • The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2009.300.921a, b) -------- "This subdued plaid of this dress was designed after Scottish tartans, which became popular in the 1850s due to Queen Victoria (1837-1901) taking part-time residence at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The plaid stripes alternating with more subdued plain stripes draw particular attention to the beauty of the textile. The female silhouette of the middle of the 19th century consisted of a fitted corseted bodice and wide full skirts. The conical skirts developed between the 1830s, when the high waist of the Empire silhouette was lowered, and the skirts became more bell-shaped, to the late 1860s, when the fullness of the skirts was pulled to the back and the bustle developed. The flared skirts of the period gradually increased in size throughout and were supported by a number of methods. Originally support came from multiple layers of petticoats which, due to weight and discomfort, were supplanted by underskirts comprised of graduated hoops made from materials such as baleen, cane, and metal. Located roughly 4km south of the town of Kavadarci, North Macedonia is a memorial which was created on October 11th, 1963 by Macedonian designer Jordan Grabul which commemorates the 'Massacre of Vataša', in which 12 male youths (aged 15 to 28) from the nearby village of Vataša who were shot to death at this spot on June 16th, 1943 by Bulgarian Axis forces. The execution, which occurred in the area known as Moklište (Моклиште), was in retaliation for incursions upon Axis troops by local Partisan fighters. The main element of the work consist of a large bronze relief sculpture hung upon a curved concrete wall that sits amidst the site of the execution.
