“Where did these clothes come from?” is a question I get at the museum a lot. Unfortunately, we don’t know. While most of the clothes had been packed in shipping crates or barrels, no record seems to have been kept about which clothes came out of what crates. Many of the crates had destinations and/or distributor’s names written on them; if I had that information I might be able to narrow the place of origin. All I can say is, in the 1850’s the majority of wool production for the American market was being done in England. Cotton, obviously, was one of American’s largest exports, and Britain passed protectionist laws against importing Indian or Egyptian cotton during the first decades of the 19th century, so the U.K. textiles industry relied heavily on American cotton. A number of English improvements in spinning and weaving machines, coupled with the exploitation of slave labor in America, made cotton not only profitable but something of an investment bubble for wealthy men on both sides of the Atlantic, prior to the Civil War. The fragments of clothing pictured here are the cuffs and collar of a “Linsey-woolsey” coat: cotton warp and wool weft, in this case. According to at least one source, Britain produced a number of such “cheaper” goods for the American market, and then as now, the “better” woolens and silks came from France. Occasionally I run across a “ghost” of a label, shown here as a white square of ink deposited on what used to be a coat collar. The cotton fiber of the label is gone, leaving only its coating of ink on the wool weft of the fabric. The other two photos seem to show the remnants of a pattern from the printed cotton lining, now resembling nothing so much as ash deposit. These fragments cannot be cleaned or restored further, at least not with the resources I have; they reside in the freezer to slow further deterioration. These tantalizing glimpses of what might have been information make me weep. #arabiasteamboatmuseum #1850s #freshwaterpreservation #artifacts #museumlife #publichistory #historicalcostume #historicalclothing #menswear #1850sfashion #laborhistory #textilesindustry

⚠️ Deicer Alert ⚠️ Since it hasn’t significantly snowed in NE Minneapolis in nearly a month, this excess deicer has been simply sitting in a dry parking lot. The thick layers of teal caught my eye and I’ve been determined to tend to it before the next precipitation event. Early this morning, I swept for three hours across 14 parking spaces and safely removed 13 (heavy) bags of toxic salt. Yikes that’s A LOT of salt!! 1 TEASPOON of chloride deicer permanently pollutes 5 gallons of water. Based off of lifting them into my car, I’m estimating that I collect several hundred pounds of salt (mixed with whatever sand or debris lives on parking lot surfaces). I’ve sent an email to the property owner and management, inviting them to join in the effort of salt reduction and freshwater preservation by contracting MPCA Smart Salting certified folks for snow removal. I shared a recent @mprnews article about salt pollution causing impaired waterways. I offered to either return their salt for reuse or to properly dispose of it. And offered to introduce them to the teams at our local water protection orgs. Fingers crossed for a response. We all have a role to embody in the urgent work for freshwater protection and climate action. I’d love to hear what inspires you. 💧 Also, any other local parking lots I should tend to? 🧹 If you see salt, sweep it! 🧹 . . . #mnwatersteward #minnesota #minneapolis #winter #BestManagementPractices #smartsalting #saltpollution #salt #deicer #roadsalt #pollution #toxic #forever #freshwaterpreservation #responsibility #localart #volunteer #community

Human appropriation of land and water together with changes in climate have jointly driven rapid declines in river health and biodiversity worldwide, stimulating calls for an Emergency Recovery Plan for freshwater ecosystems. Yet freshwater ecosystems like rivers have been consistently under-represented within global agreements such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Consequently, there is no reliable basis for tracking global trends in river health, assessing the impacts of international agreements on river ecosystems and guiding global investments in river management to priority issues or regions. In a recent study published in PLOS Water, a team of researchers reviewed national and regional approaches for river health monitoring to develop a comprehensive set of scalable indicators that can support “top-down” global surveillance while also facilitating standardized “bottom-up” local monitoring efforts. They evaluate readiness of these indicators for implementation at a global scale, chart a road map that identifies data and technical priorities and opportunities to advance global river health monitoring, and present recommendations for coordinated action and investment by policy makers, research funders and scientists to develop and implement the framework.

Hanging out for the next 30 days at Great Herring Pond Plymouth/Bourne MA This magnificent body of water has interesting fauna including green freshwater sponges and magnificent bryozoan (Pectinatella magnifica) Kudos to the people and organizations behind its preservation! @wildlandstrust www.wildlandstrust.org @Herringpondswatershed @HerringPondWatershedAssociation Established in 2007, Herring Pond Watershed Association is a volunteer group focused on preserving the health of Great & Little Herring Ponds, their watershed and wildlife. www.theherringpondswatershed.org www.facebook.com/HerringPondWatershedAssociation #Mikolji #plymouthma #plymouth #massachusetts #capecod #newengland #igsouthofboston #02360 #spondsofplymouth #southshorema #plymouthmass #mynewengland #wickedlocal #plymouthrock #conservation #freshwaterconservation #community #bostonma #savetheplanet #freshwaterpreservation #plymouthwaterfront #plimothplantation #freshwaterfish #savefreshwaterfish #Herringpondswatershed #HerringPondWatershedAssociation #Herringponds #pondsofplymouth #HPWA #wildlandstrust

We wanted to start the year showing the important geographical size of the Orinoco River basin. Most people only have heard about the “Amazon River” or the “Amazon Rainforest” when you talk about South American river systems. This creates an enormous unbalance in research funding and a great bio-knowledge gap. We have been working now for almost 15 years in reducing this knowledge gap. We want people to know the Orinoco River: a large and “little-known” region. @aquapac @fundalasalle @instituto_humboldt @cancilleriacol @Stamperija @lsigmausb @colombianosune @icm_miami @nubiaabaji @miamiartstrong @hispafest @meridiano_67 @redlist_of_ecosystems @fishmigration   #Mikolji #orinoco #rioorinoco #fishart #ecoawareness #orinocoriver #biotopia #biotopevideos #conservation #amazonriver  #amazonrainforest  #aquaticresearch #riverpreservation #biotope #amazonaquarium #freshwaterfish #biotopia.tv  #rivervideos #fishscience #freshwaterconservation #fishdocumentaries #fishvideos #fishmigration #freeflowingrivers #happyfish #freshwaterpreservation

Search: reputable and respectable environmental advocacy groups that focus on water preservation and ecology, preferably women and or minority led. Does anyone have recommendations? I gravitate towards smaller orgs for meaningful connections. My goal is for the profits of the Water Where/Wear Series to supports radical change that will help our ecosystems and habitat.
