Sometimes I find myself wondering if I am doing all that the Lord would have me do. Do I succor the weak… Do I comfort the broken hearted… Do I help the weary rest… Do I shine a light for the darkened souls… Or… Am I letting it pass me by? How are you scattering your rays of light to bring succor, comfort, help, and shine? #genconf #iamachildofgod #generalconference #genconfquote #genconf2024 #thechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #letyourlightshine #lds #honeysaltco #etsy

“To all who have lost loved ones, we would turn Job’s question to an answer: If a man die, he shall live again. We know, for we have the light of revealed truth. “I am the resurrection, and the life,” spoke the Master. “He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” Through tears and trials, through fears and sorrows, through the heartache and loneliness of losing loved ones, there is assurance that life is everlasting. Our Lord and Savior is the living witness that such is so.” President Thomas S. Monson

No one is EVER too far gone. Every single person on earth is still capable of change. God can turn and change hearts. We never know when the Spirit will start to work on someone. We never know when our own words or actions or love will touch someone’s heart at just the right moment. Those are the lessons I gleaned from my studies this past two weeks. That is the hope I walked away with. We cannot write anyone off- that is not our call to make. Our finite minds don’t understand divine potential or eternal progression well enough. Rather, this beautiful lesson and example of Abinidi’s words and Alma’s powerful change should give us hope- an immense amount of hope. That everyone is capable. That everyone has potential to become better. And that God’s love and desire for all of the human family to return home is infinitely more powerful than ours. 🤍 . . . . . . . #jesuschrist #faith #lifecoach #faithbasedlifecoach #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #lds #ldsmissionaries #comefollowme #cfm #ldsconf #byu #bookofmormon #generalconference #christianinspiration #genconf

This week threw a curveball at me that made an already busy week completely exhausting. As I rushed to get ready one morning, everything piled together in my mind. The list of everything I had to do. The emotions people around me were feeling. The feeling that I would not make it through the day. This scripture that we’ve been studying this week came to my mind: “And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs”. (Mosiah 24:14) ⁣I decided that morning to test it. I knew I still needed to face my problems that day. But could He really take the FEELING of the burden away without actually solving any of my problems? I closed my eyes and pictured myself carrying the burdens that seemed to be weighing me down. And I pictured myself waking humbly up to my Savior… And setting it all down at His feet. I said, “I know everything I need to do and manage and handle today. “But I’m going to leave the feeling of being burdened at your feet.” I pictured myself walking away, and I took a deep breath. I felt lighter. Like, literally, I felt like an actual physical load had been taken off my back. I said a prayer of gratitude and went on with my day. My list didn’t change that day, but I was SHOCKED at the miracles that kept piling up. Like, I said I was going to test this theory with my Savior, and it’s like He was saying “Prove me herewith”. I can’t list or share all the miracles, but I’ll just say that ONE of them was my ministering sister texting me and telling me that she had “randomly” ordered pizza to be delivered to my home that night. I floated through that difficult day. Jesus really means what He says. If we, who are heavy laden, come to Jesus and really set the weighty, overwhelming feelings down at His feet, He will give us rest. Not rest in the way you may think or want. (I’m still hoping I can find time to take a nap in the next couple days, but it’s not looking hopeful…) But that rest for the soul was all that I really needed. Art: “At His Feet” by Melissa Moen

Grab your JUNE (not May!) @the.liahona magazine when you get a chance! This article was so helpful to articulate some of the conversations surrounding the truthfulness of the Gospel, including HIS true church. “Our hearts are often warmed when we hear someone testify, “I know the Church is true.” It is a significant thing to have the Spirit bear witness of that truth to us as well. Yet it seems that current cultural trends have brought with them widespread mistrust in institutions generally and in religious organizations more particularly. By contrast, Latter-day Saints covenant to support The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in its fundamental mission to build up the kingdom of God on the earth and to establish Zion, all in joyful anticipation of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In doing so, we recognize that it is only through the formal institution of the Lord’s restored Church that those precious purposes can be accomplished. … Of course, we should testify that the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, and other fundamentals are true, but there is also great importance in testifying of the truth of the Church as an institution.” - Elder J. Devn Cornish

Life has been relentless for the past month. And by “life” I mean, the hard stuff that comes with being a human in this crazy world. We’ve felt it acutely. From sick kids to May-busyness to knee surgery to blood clots to finals to unfinished house renovations to permitting issues to just plain exhaustion… There have been lots of blessings. But there have been a lot of hard things, too. And the hard things all seemed to hit at once (as they do). The truth is, I haven’t had much to say or share recently in my little corner of the internet. But when I read this Maxwell quote last night, it felt like he was speaking to me from the dust. Oh, how I miss his wisdom. “How could there be refining fires without enduring some heat?” We’ve felt the fires. We’ve felt the heat. But the refining…. The process of becoming something better, more beautiful, more whole…. That’s the “why” behind every hard thing. That’s the whole purpose of challenges, really. And I’ve decided that 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 refinement is worth the heat. 🤍 . . . . . . #jesuschrist #faith #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #lds #ldsmissionaries #comefollowme #cfm #ldsconf #byu #bookofmormon #generalconference #christianinspiration #genconf

No ward or family is perfect, just like I’m sure the people of Alma weren’t perfect! But the people of Alma did certain things to create unity among themselves that were recorded in Mosiah 18. For example, one day a week they would “gather themselves together to teach the people, and to worship the Lord their God” (Mosiah 18:25). And they would “impart of their substance, every one according to that which he had” (Mosiah 18:27). So in your wards, or in your families, what specific things have you done to create more unity? #comefollowme #comefollowme2024 #bookofmormon #bom #jesuschrist #lds #Idsconf #genconf #generalconference #thechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #churchofjesuschrist #latterdaysaint #thesavior #sharegoodness #lighttheworld #cfm #scripturestudy #searchponderandpray

#REPOST @ldspreppergirl Yesterday, my dad gave a talk in sacrament and I heard him use this quote. I see this expressed from time to time online when people say, “I’m an active member and I disagree with this” or “I’m active member, and I don’t believe in this.” (I can make a list of these comments). Even while being “active” in the Church, have we truly yoked ourselves to Christ? Have we submissed our will to our father in heaven? Would you be willing to give everything, even your life, for Christ? Are you “all in?” How different would our world be if more of us were not simply active, but all in. I choose to be “All in”. 🩷 #thechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #churchofjesuschrist #latterdaysaints #lds #ldsquotes #nealamaxwell #genconf #choosetheright #latterdaysaint

In his talk, “Words Matter” Elder Ronald A. Rasband continued, “Unfortunately, words can be thoughtless, hasty, and hurtful. …On the other hand, words can celebrate victory, be hopeful and encouraging. …Words can open our minds to truth. That is why, first and foremost, the Lord’s words matter. …Believing and heeding the word of God will draw us closer to Him. President Russell M. Nelson has promised, ‘If you will study His words, your ability to be more like Him will increase.’ …I picture young Joseph Smith on his knees hearing the words of his Father in Heaven: ‘[Joseph,] This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!’ We ‘hear Him’ in the words of scripture, but do we let them just sit on the page, or do we recognize He is speaking to us? Do we change? We ‘hear Him’ in personal revelation and promptings from the Holy Ghost, in answers to prayer, and in those moments when only Jesus Christ, through the power of His Atonement, can lift our burdens, grant us forgiveness and peace, and embrace us ‘in the arms of his love.’ Second, the words of prophets matter. Prophets testify of the divinity of Jesus Christ. They teach His gospel and show His love for all. I bear my witness that our living prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, hears and speaks the word of the Lord. …Third, and so very important, are our own words. Believe me, in our emoji-filled world, our words matter. …Let me suggest three simple phrases that we can use to take the sting out of difficulties and differences, lift, and reassure each other: ‘Thank you.’ ‘I am sorry.’ And ‘I love you.’ Do not save these humble phrases for a special event or catastrophe. Use them often and sincerely, for they show regard for others. …Brothers and sisters, words do matter. I promise that if we ‘feast upon the words of Christ’ that lead to salvation, our prophet’s words that guide and encourage us, and our own words that speak of who we are and what we hold dear, the powers of heaven will pour down upon us.” @ronaldarasband #words #lds #generalconference #genconf #wordsmatter #ldsquotes #gospel #ldsconference #jesuschrist #thankyou #iamsorry #iloveyou #prophet #generalconference2024

Let’s set the stage here: There were two different groups of people. Both oppressed by the Lamanites. Both wanting to escape to Zarahemla. The first group, led by Limhi, thought about how they were going to escape. They brainstormed ideas, listened to Gideon, and came up with a plan. Their result? Limhi’s men gave strong wine to the Lamanite guards and escaped while they were in a drunken sleep. It worked! The second group was led by Alma. They prayed for a long time for relief, and finally got an answer: “Thou shalt go before this people, and I will go with thee and deliver this people out of bondage.” (Mosiah 24:17) Not knowing exactly what was going to happen, the people packed their belongings and waited with faith. Miraculously, the Lamanite guards were in a deep sleep, and everyone escaped! The Lord answers the prayers of His people. But He answers them in different ways, in different situations, and in different times. While Limhi had to come up with ideas, talk with others, and execute the plan… Alma and his people were just waiting in faith, acting on directions they didn’t quite understand yet. But guess what was the same with both groups? The result! They both were freed from bondage because they relied on the Lord. “Every one of our paths is different.” - Reyna Aburto No matter the path the Lord takes, He will provide a way to make miracles happen.

In Mosiah 18, we read about one of the greatest scriptural examples of unity! We learn that Alma’s people were unified as they met together often to worship (verse 25), gave to the needy (verse 28), and gave comfort to those in need (verse 9). There’s so much we can learn from this ancient people about unity. So here are some things we can learn from modern church leaders about how to develop more unity today. Remember that picture book, “Seven Blind Mice” by Ed Young? ⁣ There are seven blind mice who each try to figure out what the large object in front of them is. ⁣ ⁣ One feels the foot and thinks it’s a pillar. Another one feels the trunk and thinks it’s a snake. And so on. . . They all are accurate in their assessment of what they physically feel, and draw completely reasonable conclusions. ⁣ ⁣ But they are all wrong. ⁣ ⁣ It’s an elephant. ⁣ ⁣ The Lamanites made a reasonable, but very incorrect, assumption that the people who kidnapped some of their women were the people of Limhi they kept clashing with next door. ⁣ “They were angry with the people of Limhi, for they thought it was the people of Limhi.” (Mosiah 20:6) ⁣ But they were wrong. ⁣ ⁣ This is an essential lesson to learn here on earth: ⁣ ⁣ While we do our best to draw accurate conclusions each day, there are many times when we are very wrong. ⁣ ⁣ Your ministering sister who didn’t reach out to you when you were clearly struggling, is dealing with brutal anxiety. ⁣ Your bishop who completely ignored you when you obviously needed help, had just received some concerning personal news. ⁣ Your friend who didn’t respond to your text, saw your message but then got interrupted by her kids and honestly forgot to reply. (🙋🏼‍♀️) ⁣ We do our best to create the truth of what’s happening around us, but at the end of the day, we are often wrong in our assumptions of other people. ⁣ ⁣ And other people are wrong about us. ⁣ So what do we do about this? ⁣ I think happiness and peace are found in letting go of the frustrating stories we make up when we don’t actually know the whole truth. ⁣ Sometimes I like to come up with my own backstories in my mind that completely and reasonably explain what someone did. But most of the time, I’ve learned to just give it to God. I’m naturally going to feel frustrated, confused, let down, forgotten, annoyed. . . But I can quickly return to happiness and peace when I let that anger go and humble myself before Jesus Christ, the only One who knows exactly what everyone is going through. Humility, surrendering it to God, and finding love instead.

Here’s an up-close look at this new design!

5/22/2024, 3:26:11 PM

Have you ever fallen out of the habit of saying prayers? Then repented? And then fallen out of the habit yet again? I certainly have. I start to feel pretty frustrated. But I noticed that after Alma had just finished teaching all of the people what it meant to be a member of Christ’s church by mourning with those who mourn, taking Jesus’ name upon them, keeping the commandments, and being baptized, this is what the people did and said: “. . .they clapped their hands for joy, and exclaimed: This is the desire of our hearts.” (Mosiah 18:11) I can pretty much guarantee that while these people were amazing, they weren’t perfect. I’m sure they didn’t hear Alma preach and immediately keep every commandment with exactness afterward. They were human, with human tendencies. But do you know what they got right? They had a perfect DESIRE! They DESIRED to be baptized. They DESIRED to make covenants. They DESIRED to serve the people around them. So even when we aren’t perfect with prayer (or whatever your habitual sin may be)… Do we desire to pray every day? Do we keep trying every single time we forget or mess up? Do we sincerely want to do better? Do we desire to commune with God more and more? If we have a good desire to be righteous, then we are on the right track. “We are going to be blessed for our desire to do good, even as we actually strive to be so.” - Jeffrey R. Have you ever been watching a movie when suddenly something really bad happens to one of the good guys and it’s just totally shocking? Like, you have to grapple with it for a while and keep thinking that the person isn’t actually dead, and that surely they’ll surface again soon….. but they don’t, and in the end, the plot was just sort of tragic? I’ve read the Book of Mormon many times in my life, and yet- every single time- when I get to the story of Abinidi doing exactly what God tells him to do, and then being burned at the stake, I feel that way- like, wait- what? Wait, no! This isn’t how it’s supposed to happen! I’ve learned so much from this ancient prophet to have his life teaching God’s word and will. Perhaps more than anything, I’ve learned these three major lessons: 1. Being brave in living your faith will require grit. Being willing to listen to God’s voice and then act will rarely be comfortable or easy. But when we do those things- when we courageously and vulnerably live true to our own personal values and beliefs, we become stronger, and our divine purpose and potential become more and more apparent. 2. In that bravery and vulnerability, we never know who we may have an effect on. With Abinidi, it was Alma- a key prophet and incredible missionary. Who will it be for you? The truth is, you (like Abinidi) may never know. But God uses our willingness to teach and help and heal others. 3. People can change. The end, full stop. Not one of us lives in a permanent state- thank goodness! Like the wicked priest, Alma, anyone can change. Never give up on someone. Never write someone off. It’s never too late, and no one is ever so far gone that Christ’s love can’t reach them. 🤍 . . . . #jesuschrist #faith #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #lds #ldsmissionaries #comefollowme #cfm #ldsconf #byu #bookofmormon #generalconference #christianinspiration #genconf

King Noah was about to let Abinadi go. ⁣ ⁣ Yeah, he was a lazy and wicked man. But Abinadi had just spoken with clear power from God. ⁣ ⁣ “King Noah was about to release him, for he feared his word; for he feared that the judgments of God would come upon him.” (Mosiah 17:11) ⁣ But his priests, the friends he had chosen to surround himself with, added pressure. They found accusations against Abinadi. They got angry. ⁣ ⁣ And this brought Noah back into his prideful anger, leading Noah ordering Abinadi to be tortured and then burned to death. ⁣ ⁣ We are all responsible for our own actions. ⁣ ⁣ But the people we surround ourselves with can make a huge difference. ⁣ ⁣ This is easy to see when a wayward child is influenced by a group of their peers. ⁣ ⁣ But it’s a little harder to see in myself. ⁣ Who am I surrounded by? Family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers… But what about the other influences on my mind too? Social media accounts, TV shows, podcasts, books… ⁣ How are they affecting me? ⁣ Am I being subtly nudged toward complaining, making fun, judging harshly, or doubting? ⁣ Is my support system supporting my most important goals in life? ⁣ I’m not just saying to only surround myself with “members of the Church”, but doing my best to ensure that the people I willingly interact with the most are kind and have good intentions, no matter their religious affiliation. ⁣ And I think the flip side is just as equally worth considering— Am I being a righteous support system to others - encouraging and loving and accepting and uplifting the best that I can?⁣ “Find good friends. Be good friends. Support one another wherever you are. Stand with holy people.” - Gary E. Stevenson  ⁣ We know we are in control of our own actions. ⁣ ⁣ But Noah’s choices of friends tipped the scale in a dire direction. And a kind, supportive, loving friend can make all the difference.

It has become clear to me in recent weeks that times of upheaval, difficulty, unrest, and tragedy will hit each of our lives at some point. Not one person on earth is immune from big, life-altering challenges. It is, in fact, a necessary part of being human. As I’ve thought of people we know and love who are suffering right now, it’s occurred to me time and time again how grateful I am for the gospel of Jesus Christ and for the grounding force it is in my life. I love this quote I came across during my study this morning: Ricardo P. Giménez of the Seventy taught, “As we face the storms of life, I know that if we make our best effort and rely upon Jesus Christ and His Atonement as our refuge, we will be blessed with the relief, comfort, strength, temperance, and peace that we are seeking.” Relief, comfort, strength, temperance, and peace. What more could we want? What more could this aching world need? The Savior and His perfect Atonement are the answer to every hard thing. They cover it all. And while we may feel our situation is different or more nuanced, He knows. Jesus knows you, He knows your heart, He knows your pain and worry and fear and heartbreak… and He is the answer. It truly does all come back to Him. 🤍 Art by @janellesusanart . . . . . #jesuschrist #faith #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #lds #ldsmissionaries #comefollowme #cfm #ldsconf #byu #bookofmormon #generalconference #christianinspiration #genconf

Each year I taught seminary, I would always have one lesson about light, and I always did the same activity to drive the point home. I would walk my class into the chapel and close the doors and turn off all of the lights. There is perfect darkness in that large room in those conditions. I would let the kids adjust to the darkness while I talked about the darkness in our lives that will show up from time to time, and how it can feel completely enveloping. Then I would use my infrared vision (read: I would stumble my way) to the top corner of the stand, at the opposite end of where my class was seated. I would then turn on the tiniest little light- like an electric tealight candle- and hold it up. That tiny little light would give enough light to see my face and my surrounding area. I would then ask the kids to spread out around the chapel and touch their phones just to access the light from their screens. That little bit of light would literally light up the whole chapel. You could see where you were going without running into anything. I hope they always remember that the smallest amount of light will always extinguish darkness, but darkness can NEVER extinguish light. It doesn’t work. If there is light, the light wins- every time. We each have light to share with the world- and it literally drives out darkness. As we “let our light so shine” (Matt 5:16) - every day, and with everyone we meet and interact with - we WILL fill the world with love. We WILL influence others for good. We WILL strengthen our own families, our congregations, our communities. As you shine and light the world, others will shine and spread their light as well. And that combined light and love DOES have the power to heal this broken world. 🤍 . . . . #jesuschrist #faith #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #lds #ldsmissionaries #comefollowme #cfm #ldsconf #byu #bookofmormon #generalconference #christianinspiration #genconf

Right now, on the home page of @ldsliving you can read an article I wrote about a lesson I learned from a Jewish man at the Western Wall. When I asked about his experience with the Sabbath growing up, I learned that the rules in his home were very strict: no turning lights on or off, no cooking, no television; or even opening the refrigerator. I asked him, “When you were 16 years old, were you ever tempted to rebel against these strict Sabbath rules?” He looked at me like I was from another planet and said, “Why would I want to disrupt the Sabbath? It is a holy day; I love the Sabbath because it gives me a time for peace and renewal. The Sabbath is a delight. Why would I want to make it a less holy day?” I realized I had a lot to learn from this man. On another occasion, a Jewish man told me that when people see Sabbath observance as “strict rules” they miss the point. He said, “It’s not denial, it’s liberation. For example, one can’t answer the phone on Shabbat. Learning this discipline teaches also ignoring the phone when eating dinner with family and other more important’ activities. It’s not strict, it focuses on what’s important, family and community.” What do you think about my friend’s statement, “It’s not denial, it’s liberation”? What lessons have you learned from others about keeping the Sabbath Day holy?

If laws and commandments aren’t what save us, why do we follow them? Abinadi tackled this question in Mosiah 13 when he was teaching (and criticizing) King Noah and his priests. He says in Mosiah 13:28: “Salvation doth not come by the law alone; and were it not for the atonement, which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, that they must unavoidably perish”. Commandments help point us to our ultimate salvation: Jesus Christ! So if that is the purpose of commandments, what is one commandment where you’ve really made that connection for how obeying it helps you remember and points you toward your Savior?

Once, when a reporter tried to recognize Mother Teresa for her life’s mission to help the poor, she responded: “It’s [God’s] work. I am like a… pencil in his hand. …He does the thinking. He does the writing. The pencil has nothing to do with it. The pencil has only to be allowed to be used.” What beautiful imagery. This is God’s work. His words, His acts, His purposes. We are truly just the instruments. The question is, are we willing to be used? Are we willing to stay sharp, so that He can most easily “write” through us? What does that look like? To me, that means working hard to be in tune with the Holy Spirit at all times- ready to be His instrument whenever we are needed. It means being willing to be sharpened, which often happens by being ground down; allowing the old, inhibitory parts of our lives to be whittled away so that we can be focused on the Lord and doing His errand. As we allow this to happen, as we let Him strip away the parts of our lives that are keeping our “lead” from being sharp, and as we learn to love being that pencil through which He writes, I am confident that we will discover a particular type of joy that perhaps we’ve never known. So let’s be willing. Let’s let Him sharpen us and use us to create beauty in this world. 🤍 Art by @_caitlinconnolly_ . . . . . . . #jesuschrist #faith #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #lds #ldsmissionaries #comefollowme #cfm #ldsconf #byu #bookofmormon #generalconference #christianinspiration #genconf

During my senior year of college, I taught seminary in Spanish Fork. One day, a student named Mindy came into the classroom and she said, “Brother Hilton, can we have a silent lesson today? Brother Kirkham's class had a silent lesson and everyone is saying it was so spiritual.” I had no idea what Mindy was talking about. But after class, I went over to Brother Kirkham and asked, “What's a silent lesson?” I learned that a silent lesson entailed giving some specific written instructions (on an overhead! This was the 90s!), like “Read Isaiah 53:3-5 and look for what Christ experienced.” Then he would show a video clip from the Lamb of God that went along with those verses. Throughout the lesson he would alternate between scripture passages, video clips from the lamb of God, and some music. The whole point of the silent lesson was that the students were interacting with the scriptures and multimedia, and the Spirit was teaching them. I borrowed Brother Kirkham’s lesson, and it was extremely spiritually powerful. From that point on, I've incorporated silent lessons into my teaching. It's not something that you would use all the time, but as a seminary teacher, (and still today teaching at BYU) I use them once a semester as variety and also to hopefully facilitate a powerful experience for my students. Brother Kirkham’s silent lesson was based on Isaiah 53 and it used what was then a relatively new church movie called, “The Lamb of God.” Over the years, I’ve modified this lesson in various ways, but continue to use it when I teach both Isaiah 53, and Mosiah 14-16, which is where Abinadi quotes and explains Isaiah 53. In The Book of Mormon: A Master Class, I made a silent lesson for Mosiah 14-16. I hope you’ll go check it out (you can find it through the link in my bio or just search on YT, it's Class 20). It’s the kind of thing where you need about 35 minutes blocked out to have an experience, but if you can carve out that time, I think you’ll find it to be worthwhile. You could also do this with older children/teens or in a church class. Have you ever experienced a silent lesson? What are your thoughts about them?

Other prophets had their lives saved in miraculous ways. Other prophets converted entire cities and softened the hardest hearts. ⁣ ⁣ But that wasn’t Abinadi’s mission. His was to preach repentance to hardened hearts, convert young Alma who would be cast out, and die a brutal death. ⁣ ⁣ We all have different missions here on earth. ⁣ Some will endure difficult financial situations. Some will be saddled with mental illness. Some will know the pain of losing loved ones prematurely. But the thing that carries us through is our faith. ⁣ ⁣ Abinadi figured out, at least by the time Noah was getting angry, that he would be sealing his words with his blood and that physical deliverance would not be his in this life. ⁣ And so, he was filled with that faith in God. That peaceful faith that surpasses all reasoning. That faith lasted even until the last moments as the flames surrounded him and he cried out: “O God, receive my soul.” (Mosiah 17:19) ⁣ Do we have the faith in God to endure our personal missions? ⁣ We can’t compare them to other people’s because we’ve all been asked to endure different things. But ultimately, our faith in God can help us endure our personal missions well. Artwork: “Abinadi” by Jorge Cocco

Abinadi called Noah’s priests out. ⁣ “If ye teach the law of Moses why do ye not keep it?” (Mosiah 12:29) ⁣ They knew the scriptures. They knew the commandments. ⁣ ⁣ But they were still lazy and rude and evil. ⁣ ⁣ Their knowledge didn’t change them. ⁣ ⁣ Abinadi had the same knowledge of the scriptures and the law. ⁣ ⁣ But he used that knowledge to open a channel of communication with the Lord, receive the personal revelation that he needed to preach repentance (twice!), and then followed through on the promptings. ⁣ ⁣ Our knowledge can’t save us. ⁣ ⁣ Knowing the scripture stories won’t save us. ⁣ ⁣ Knowing the doctrine won’t save us. ⁣ ⁣ Our actions will. ⁣ ⁣ Studying the scriptures and then using that knowledge to change our actions. ⁣ ⁣ Learning and connecting with the doctrine and then using that to propel us to become more Christlike. ⁣ ⁣ King Noah, his priests, and Abinadi all had the same knowledge. ⁣ ⁣ But their hearts were in completely different states. “In contrast to the institutions of the world, which teach us to know something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become something.” - Dallin H. Oaks

I think one lie that Satan is really good at telling us is that things will stay the same. “You’ve got a bad habit, and you’ll never overcome it.” “Life will always be this overwhelming, so you should stay frustrated all the time.” “Life is going okay even though you stopped keeping the commandments, so you’ll be fine in the long run.” In fact, King Noah’s wicked priests made fun of Abinadi for telling them to repent by echoing this same message: “And behold, we are strong, we shall not come into bondage, or be taken captive by our enemies; yea, and thou hast prospered in the land, and thou shalt also prosper.” (Mosiah 12:15) They haven’t been taken into bondage yet, so OF COURSE that means they will never be taken into bondage! They had been prospering just fine, so OF COURSE they are going to continue to prosper! But Jesus? He’s all about change. If you’ve got a bad habit, Jesus wants to help you overcome it. If you are feeling overwhelmed, Jesus wants to offer you peace and strength to endure. If you think you don’t need the gospel of Jesus Christ, Jesus invites you to see what you are missing out on. Nothing ever stays the same…. And that is actually the best news ever. Artwork: “The Rescuer” by Haley Miller

God doesn’t take away our battles. ⁣ ⁣ Zeniff’s people had to fight against the Lamanites.⁣ ⁣ Zeniff helped his people become good, righteous, and industrious. ⁣ ⁣ And still, the Lamanites came. ⁣ ⁣ He armed them with all sorts of weapons. ⁣ ⁣ And still, people died. ⁣ ⁣ And each day, on large and small scales, we are facing battles. ⁣ ⁣ No matter how righteous we are. ⁣ ⁣ No matter how much we have prepared and defend ourselves. ⁣ ⁣ Real damage is done to our lives from these battles of all sizes that we are up against. ⁣ ⁣ The ultimate difference between the wicked Lamanites and the righteous people of Zeniff?⁣ “God did hear our cries and did answer our prayers; and we did go forth in his might”. (Mosiah 9:18) The people of Zeniff went forth with God’s might. ⁣ ⁣ Both groups experienced the battle. ⁣ ⁣ But only one had God’s might and power with them. ⁣ ⁣ I find this so comforting when going through all of my personal battles, both physical and emotional. ⁣ ⁣ I have God on my side. ⁣ ⁣ To strengthen me. To make the damage not quite as bad as it could be. To help me prepare even more. ⁣ The trials are still there, but I don’t ever want to face them without the calm and peace that come from going forth with the Lord’s might. ⁣ “We are not and never need be alone. We can press forward in our daily lives with heavenly help.” — David A. Bednar

I attended the baptism today of my new friend, Maria. I wonder if I’ve ever known anyone to be as excited about the gospel of Jesus Christ as she is. Her enthusiasm is infectious! I don’t know a lot about Maria’s life from years past, but I do know she has changed. I also know that Maria has been preparing for this day for a long time, even if she didn’t realize it. Dallin H. Oaks said, “We often hear that faith can move mountains. It is more important to remember that faith can move people.” God works on people- often for years and years before it’s the perfect time. God works on minds and hearts. God coordinates beautifully divine meetings between people who need each other. God, the Master Author, creates the best plots. And I’m so grateful that He put me, even as the most unimportant supporting character, into Maria’s story. 🤍 . . . . . . #jesuschrist #faith #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #lds #ldsmissionaries #comefollowme #cfm #ldsconf #byu #bookofmormon #generalconference #christianinspiration #genconf

Unless we are content with surrendering our will to luck and happenstance, the goal to become like Jesus requires thorough reflection on the character of God. Studying God’s character is like navigating the seas by understanding the stars; knowing how to navigate according to the location of celestial bodies enables our willfully following their coordinates to our destination. To not study God’s character, and yet to determine oneself to live a Christlike life, is akin to setting sail without looking up at the stars, and hoping that somehow the tides of time just so happen to wash us ashore at our destination, with all the jewels of truth, goodness, and beauty accidentally in our pockets.

In a world with simple tips and tricks everywhere, sometimes it’s easier to just order food instead of making your own! (And we do that plenty often around here 😅) But when is a time when you put in hard work and it ended up being totally worth it? For example, the people living in the land of Nephi were really industrious, as we read about in Mosiah 9:8-9. They built buildings, repaired the walls of the city, grew food, and worked hard for their prosperity. On the other hand, the Lamanites next door weren’t so industrious, and wanted to take advantage of the hard work of Zeniff’s people next door. Because of the faithful hard work of the people of Zeniff, the Lamanites were not successful, and were left without that prosperity Zeniff’s people enjoyed. Hard work doesn’t always pay off in the ways we want it to, but other times it’s totally worth it! Let me know of a time it totally paid off in your life. ⬇️

5/10/2024, 4:26:08 PM

According to Zeniff, the root of the problem of Nephite – Lamanite conflict was the faulty traditions of the Lamanites. Zeniff writes, “[The Lamanites believed] in the tradition of their fathers…that they were driven out of the land of Jerusalem because of the iniquities of their fathers…” (Mosiah 10:12). About twenty Book of Mormon verses refer to the false traditions that the Lamanites had inherited from their fathers. Even Samuel the Lamanite says, “the [deeds of the] Lamanites… have been evil continually, and this because of the iniquity of the tradition of their fathers” (Helaman 15:4). What about us? Have we inherited or created traditions in our lives that have a negative effect on us? I love this invitation from President Howard W. Hunter: “Measure whatever anyone else asks you to do, whether it be from your family, loved ones, your cultural heritage, or traditions you have inherited—measure everything against the teachings of the Savior. Where you find a variance from those teachings, set that matter aside and do not pursue it. It will not bring you happiness.” Today, I’m pondering these questions: 1. What traditions do I have that I should continue? 2. Are there any traditions in my life that I need to stop? 3. Are there any traditions in my life that I need to start? More on this topic in this week’s master class! #comefollowme #bookofmormon #jesuschrist #lds #scripturestudy #genconf #generalconference #thechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #churchofjesuschrist #sharegoodness #latterdaysaint

Can you imagine being driven out of your home, being taxed 50% of all your possessions, having enemies come to battle against you, and watching family and friends being killed? And then some good news comes: The people from Zarahemla have arrived to save you! Can you imagine the joy? Your “saviors” had come! The miracle you had been praying for had arrived! This is exactly what King Limhi’s people experienced. But King Limhi wanted to correct his people. He taught them that the people from Zarahelma, while helpful, were not their literal saviors. He reminded them where their actual trust should be: “Therefore, lift up your heads, and rejoice, and put your trust in God.” (Mosiah 7:19) ⁣ When we trust in earthly results, we will miss out on the true joy that comes from focusing on the Savior. If we are just waiting to feel joy until a rescue party comes from Zarahemla Or waiting for a difficult trial to end Our waiting for our health to change Or waiting for that event Or waiting for our kid to master potty training… Then we are putting our trust in the result a little bit higher than our trust in God. The people from Zarahemla were not the ones who saved Limhi’s people— God saved them. We don’t have to wait for the solution before we display our ultimate trust in God, and realize that a higher happiness and peace can be experienced right now. Our joy and happiness can be found now when we put our trust in God! Artwork: “Come, Be Not Afraid” by Dan Wilson

In his talk, “All Will Be Well Because of Temple Covenants” President Henry B. Eyring continued, “You may then experience a feeling of light and hope testifying that the promises are true. You will come to know that every covenant with God is an opportunity to draw closer to Him, which will then create a desire in your heart to keep temple covenants. We have been promised, ‘Because of our covenant with God, He will never tire in His efforts to help us, and we will never exhaust His merciful patience with us.’ It is through the sealing covenants in the temple that we can receive the assurance of loving family connections that will continue after death and last for eternity. Honoring marriage and family covenants made in temples of God will provide protection from the evil of selfishness and pride. Consistent care of brothers and sisters for each other will come only with persistent efforts to lead your family in the Lord’s way. Give children opportunities to pray for each other. Discern quickly the beginnings of discord, and positively recognize acts of unselfish service, especially to one another. When siblings pray for each other and serve each other, hearts will be softened and turned to each other and to their parents. …Trials, challenges, and heartaches will surely come to all of us. None of us are immune from ‘thorns of the flesh.’ Yet, as we attend the temple and remember our covenants, we can prepare to receive personal direction from the Lord. @henrybeyring #lds #generalconference #ldsconf #ldsquotes #ldstemple #genconf #generalconference2024 #temple #ldschurch #covenants #alliswell #marriage
