Gorgeous hike yesterday and back on the hike down the river tomorrow. The hike pictured is partly in Bourne wood where apparently #renegadenell is filmed which the kids found exciting. Was 13km but really pretty if a bit roady. Tomorrow is the 23km again which is good practise for a long one as it's almost completely flat but the warmer weather makes a massive difference, def need to figure out how much water we can reasonably carry. Anyone know if kids should drink electrolyte drinks as it gets hot? On other topics #anorexia is pretty much kicking my butt. I absolutely LIVE AND BREATHE to be outside! I am the best version of myself if the sun is shining and I’m barefoot outside. There is no worse punishment for me than to be cooped up in the house. I can get pretty depressed pretty fast being held captive by four walls. Getting outside is still the best medicine for me! I grew up in a neighborhood full of latch key kids , all of us were instructed by our parents to “ go outside and play” when we complained of being bored 😂 No supervision needed.. we had each other. Our entertainment was a big hole filled with dirt, our bicycles, any tools we could steal from my friends garage and the acres of woods behind the houses! And of course our imaginations. We instinctively knew to head in the direction of home when the sun started to set. And in my home, dinner was hot and on the table at 5:00 sharp! In just enough time for my dad to walk in the door from his 9-5 and wash his hands. I was raised on fishing, hunting, foraging, and harvesting the half acre garden we shared with my grandparents. I didn’t have much excitement for freezing and canning back then, but it planted a seed (pun intended) in me that decades later I find it so satisfying. Being beachside is my happy place, but anywhere out in nature is a close second. The sound of ocean waves and seagulls is better than any therapy, and I still associate certain bird songs with being at the rivers edge fishing with my dad or foraging for mushrooms in the woods.
