He has two fused heads on his shoulders, so when I started capturing him, I kept thinking about how I was going to do it. But once I started shooting, I found the sweet spot straight away. This Week’s Plastic Head: Toxie - Toxic Crusaders - Playmates Toys - 1991 I’m really surprised I didn’t know anything about these vibrant, mutated, radioactive dudes when I was a kid. They would have been right up my alley, as I was/am a huge fan of TMNT. Both being produced by Playmates Toys, I really don’t recall ever seeing them when I was a kid, or ever seeing the cartoon on Saturday mornings. Either way, they are creatively brilliant. I love that back in the early 90s, there was so much creative freedom to produce all these wacky action figures. Ever since starting Plastic Heads and finding out about them, I knew I just had to bring them to the gallery. They have so much character and highly saturated neon colours. Back in 1991, Playmates Toys released The Toxic Crusaders action figure line along with the cartoon, inspired by the classic movie “The Toxic Avenger.” It featured mutated characters fighting against pollution. Although they had a short run, the Toxic Crusader figures left a great impact on toy collectors because of their wacky and vibrant designs. Toxie is a lumpy-headed mutant with superpowers, but he has a good heart and is a law-abiding citizen. He is the leader of the Toxic Crusaders and comes with his cleanup mop, Toxie-Textured shield, Toxic Bandolier with grenades, and a Toxic Glow-in-the-Dark Blobbie. Are you a fan of Toxic Crusaders? So after a lifetime of art making, I am finally having my first solo show at Gallery 881 entitled “Below the Sea of Fog” featuring eleven large photographs. Please join us at the opening party Saturday May 18 from 1pm to 5 pm; and the show runs to June 15th. Taken mostly in Stanley Park over the course of the pandemic. The show tells an elliptical story; it begins with a “Romantic” portrait and ends with an evocation of Armageddon. It’s the culmination of the journey from the naïve and romantic to a gothic space where doubt and devastation reign supreme – personal, political, and environmental. Before mounting this show, I went on tours of Stanley Park with Coast Salish guides at Talaysay Tours. I will not be sharing the stories the Coast Salish shared with me on those tours, that is their prerogative. However, I was advised by my Coast Salish guides that using the original Indigenous place names in the titles of the work would be a respectful way to allude to what has haunted the park long before me or COVID. The image seen here in the poster is called “The Path back to X̱wáýx̱way”. As some of you know, I have been primarily a feature filmmaker the last twenty years but I have always made art. I even showed some, three film installations made with Mark Lewis screen in 2013 were shown at MOMA/PS1. I was also in a group show this December curated by BROAD Magazine. She’s a bit mysterious and always seems oblivious to what’s happening, but in reality, she knows what’s going on. 😂 Maggie is iconic for her sucking dummy sound effect. My favourite episode of Maggie’s is the Great Escape-style episode, where she helps a bunch of babies escape daycare. Maggie’s figure came with 5 thought bubbles and her scooter. Helga Pakasaar is a contemporary art curator and writer based in Vancouver, who for many years was the Audain Chief Curator at the Polygon Gallery. In addition to working with renowned international artists, she uncovered local photographers such as Fred Herzog and many emerging media artists. She has also produced exhibitions at Griffin Art Projects and was curator at the Art Gallery of Windsor and the Walter Phillips Gallery. Juried by a committee of distinguished art professionals on our Board and Art Advisory Board, this program serves as a platform to forward fresh ideas and new voices within the artistic mediums of lens-based practices. • A stipend will be awarded to both the curators and the exhibiting artist(s). The selected #curator and artist(s) will also have the opportunity to create up to two public programs. fall foliage (2023)🍂 one evening last autumn, when the air was crisp and the sky growing dark, I took a stroll around my neighbourhood armed with wire cutters + a mission👀 while scanning my clippings back at home, I found myself experimenting with mixing movement, light + shadow to encapsulate the essence of a brisk fall night. 💡the stripes in the 2nd are a result of flicking a lamp on and off while the scan was in progress 💡for the 4th, I used my hands and body to cast shadows which contrast against a consistent light source . . . . . . . . . . #scannerart #scanography #scanart #lensbasedart #newmedia #newmediaartist #torontoartist #torontomakers #wocartist #experimentalphoto #scannerphotography
