While not a replacement for Meijer, Flat River Outreach Ministries has an ever expanding Farm Market inside the Treasure's Thrift Store. This isn't to be confused with the FROM food pantry, which provides free items to the non-profit's clients. Instead, the Farm Market offers locally sourced foods that everyone can purchase. I discovered the Farm Market when egg prices soared during the pandemic. Someone let me know that for just a buck or two, I could get eggs at FROM. Back then, the market was a single cooler case. Now, it sprawls over an entire corner of the thrift shop and includes frozen fruits, veggies and meat as well as a variety of fruits, vegetables and shelf-stable goods. The eggs are still a steal, and other items are reasonably priced. Food trucks have become a regular fixture around town, and you can find one many nights at New Union Brewery. But did you know we also have a coffee truck? Technically, @cupofgrace_specialtycoffee is a Clarksville business, but they typically set up shop around Lowell. You may have seen them up near Heidi's on Cascade Road, which seems to be their home base. Today, they were at St. Patrick's School for Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTO was treating teachers and staff while parents were invited to stop and buy their own. Now, I had already had two cups of coffee at home before school drop-off, but I mean, you can't see a coffee truck and not stop. Am I right? In addition to coffee, Cup of Grace was selling donuts. My 8th grader is a donut fanatic so I bought one for him and one for me. I am not a donut connessiuer, but that just might have been the best donut I have ever had. I know it’s not considered cool to go to McDonald’s, but it is a food option here in Lowell. And it was apparently a very popular one at 8:30pm tonight. Decades ago, the drive thru was cheap and fast. Now, I’m not sure it’s either. I can feed my family for less at Keiser’s, but getting everyone out for a sit-down meal when I don’t have time to cook myself isn’t going to happen. And while fast food is faster than a regular restaurant, the line often moves at a pace that gives plenty of time to reflect on life choices. One thing that has revolutionized fast food, in my opinion, is the ability to order ahead on an app. No more trying to relay five orders through a speaker with questionable audio quality. Plus, I earn points when we order in the app so I can redeem for things like this free giant Frappe after a long Monday. Of course, as I look at this drink, it occurs to me that 20-something me would have no trouble downing this thing and still sleeping soundly. It's Cinco de Mayo so of course we are having Mexican for dinner tonight. Actually, I hear Cinco de Mayo isn't a huge deal in Mexico, but we are in the U.S. and it seems to be here. So, when in Rome, as the saying goes... Aaanyway, we headed to Sabor Mexicano. It was hopping inside, but we were able to snag a table on the patio. The weather was perfect, the service was fast, and we appreciated the heads up before ordering that the food would be slow. (Because obviously we weren't the only ones with Mexican food on our minds today.) We didn't mind the wait, though. With ducks, swans and a parade of goslings,, the patio along the Flat River was the perfect setting for a leisurely meal. Sabor Mexicano started quite literally in a parking lot. Well, well, well...look who's open again! Lowell's favorite (only?) seasonal farmstand/bakery came out of hibernation on May 1. Of course, calling Heidi's a farmstand seems like a bit of an understatement. I mean, of course, they have fruits and veggies, but there is so much more -- bread, donuts, cheese, donuts, meat, donuts, jam. Did I mention the donuts? Had to go into the office today -- and by office, I mean Sweet Seasons. Anyone who has ever been interviewed for Lowell's First Look knows Sweet Seasons is our first choice of meeting places. That may be because it is conveniently located in the middle of town...or maybe it's just an excuse to enjoy a cup of coffee and a delicious dessert. But even when I'm not meeting someone, Sweet Seasons is my favorite spot to work when I need a change of scenery. If I have time, I get a panini or salad. Or if I need to get in and out relatively quickly, I opt for something out of the case. An everything bagel with cream cheese is my go-to breakfast/brunch choice, but the cranberry/goat cheese quiche -- which I got today -- is a close second. If Keiser’s is the OG Lowell restaurant, Frosty Boy is the new kid on the block. It just opened last month. When Ball’s Softee Crème closed, that left a huge hole in the Lowell food scene. One that @frostyboyoflowell has stepped in to fill, and based on the long lines we see on Main Street, they seem to be doing a good job too. Now, my family’s been to Frosty Boy of Lowell a couple times and tried the ice cream. It’s good, but the chicken? I dream about the chicken. My son just got home from college, and I told him he needed to try it ASAP. He asked what it was like, and I couldn’t find the words to describe it other than ‘divine.’ What exactly broasted chicken is, I can’t say. But I know it has super crispy skin outside and juicy meat inside. For the family meal, you get wedges that are giant hunks of potatoes – crispy outside and fluffy soft inside. And the baked beans are the sleeper hit of the meal. Talk about tasty! You could also get coleslaw and I’m sure that’s good too…I mean, if you’re into that kind of thing. Be sure to order before you go because the chicken can take 20-30 minutes to prepare. There is also no indoor dining in at Frosty Boy so you can eat on their patio or take it home like we did. Is this a very brown plate of food? Yes. Yes, it is. But those beans have fiber, and it’s darn delicious so it’s all good for me. Whether you are looking to dine out, take out or cook out, Lowell has no shortage of places to get good food. During May, we are exploring a different food option each day on Instagram, starting with what I think of as the OG restaurant of Lowell: Keiser’s. When I moved to Lowell more than 25 years ago, Keiser’s was my first friend and neighbor. Located literally across the street, it was our go-to place for a quick lunch, dinner date close to home or – most commonly – breakfast. Now that I live on the other side of town, I don’t make it to Keiser’s as often as I’d like, but it’s still a favorite spot for breakfast. When I’m feeling virtuous – as I was on my recent trip – I go for Trudy’s omelet, which is packed with mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach and feta. When I’m not feeling health-conscious, it’s French toast, eggs and bacon for me. Is this fine foodie dining? Nope, and I don’t think it’s meant to be. It’s like home cooking, except you’re not cooking. Obviously, it’s something Lowell residents must like because while other restaurants have come and gone, Keiser’s has remained. Art for the Postcard Show exhibit at @flat_river_gallery_and_framing was due today. I finished these up at 10:30 last night and booked it out to Lowell to drop them off this afternoon. Cutting it close, but I made it! If you want to see them in person, they will be on display April 16-May 10 and can be purchased during the reception on May 9, 6-8pm.
