Finally able to walk more than a block after a recent spinal issue, I practically ran out of my house on Tuesday to see what was happening in the world. At Candace Madey I saw the Home Bodies show from J.A.Feng, who creates blocky and pattern-dense scenes that reflect her background in industrial design using gritty layers of undiluted paint. While the arty seriousness of Feng's textures (think Anselm Kiefer's Bohemia Lies by the Sea and Jay Defeo's The Rose) seems at odds with her meme-like subjects, that does not stop her paintings from being hilarious. In Autumnal Spirits, floating high above the pyramids of Giza, and at eye-level with the viewer, are a goggle-eyed fat caterpillar spattered with neon stars, and a six-legged ox with long antlers and enormous butterfly wings. Labor of Love I looked at for a while in the gallery, but did not really get until I saw it online. Here a seated woman, facing away from us, with a ponytail and wearing only calf-high periwinkle socks, takes up the entire surface of the canvas. She's in a pool of water indicated by tiny curlicue waves. And what is this woman doing? She is pulling a slyly smiling unicorn out of her butt. I would like to thank @melody.tian.clarke for inviting @wakeupfresco to shoot my solo show and also take some portraits. Him and I called this shot ‘the texture shot’ . We wanted to show the intricate textures that can be seen on my paintings, as I adhere to the surface stained, torn cloth, and in this case, even a torn shoe. My paintings speak about a world in turmoil, a fractured earth. It’s not just the physical planet I’m talking about, but also our society. I purposely paint a skewed horizon, giving multiple perspectives, that gives a sense of instability and confusion, disrupting the viewer’s ‘solid grounding’. Celebrating Passover amidst so much conflict, pain and fracture, I feel that my work reflects our time, especially in the sense that ‘what was once up is now down’ and vice versa. I am astounded by the sheer violence and ignorance that is surfacing, by some of our leader’s behavior, and various expressions of hatred I never thought I would witness in my life time. My work speaks about the earth as everyone’s mother, as an equal, inclusive , Al giving feminine goddess that has been sustaining us all along but somehow went under our radar. Rare Stoneware Portrait Bust of a Young Man Circa: 1907 Size: 4 1/2” (h) x 3” x 3” Provenance: Harris Diamant; David Good; Peter Brams; Private Midwestern Collection. This is a deceptively rare piece, in that you’d think there would be more of this type of thing, but there ain’t. The portrait is well studied and has great character. The collector, Peter Brams, called him his “aw shucks” guy. Made from a solid lump of stoneware (lucky it survived the kiln firing), he has cobalt blue eyes and a shirt to match. We are so pleased to welcome Adeel Uz Zafar back to the gallery! Please join us for the opening reception of Triad on 25th April, 2024 at 35 Great Jones Street. Adeel Uz Zafar completed his BFA degree at the prestigious National College of Arts, Lahore in 1998. Zafar took up the role of an illustrator and worked with several established publications before dedicating himself to painting almost two decades later. Zafar employs his childhood experiences and insight as a children’s book illustrator into his practice. In his work, childlike imagery is given a certain seriousness or gravity by being wrapped in bandages. With the use of bandages, Zafar tries to raise questions about identity and the delusion of individuality. He wraps his subjects so that the individual features or elements that make them different from one another are concealed, cloaking their identity. These monstrous objects are then placed in front of a pitch-black backdrop to create sublime visuals. The artist’s meticulous detail and laborious technique might resemble the painstaking technique of miniature painting yet he is set apart from miniature painters due to the sheer size of his art pieces. Zafar has exhibited his work extensively within the country as well as internationally. The artist has been a part of several fairs such as Art Stage Singapore (2016), India Art Fair (2016), Art Basel, Hong Kong (2015) and Pulse Art Fair, New York (2012). He has also undertaken residencies in Lahore, Sydney and Cleveland. Bessie Harvey (1929–1994) was an American artist best known for her sculptures constructed out of found objects, primarily pieces of wood. A deeply religious person, Harvey’s faith and her own interest in nature were primary sources for her work. In shrinking his celestial vistas, Zafar underscores his belief that the infinite need not be monumental. The miniature grid of gauze seems to be his preferred medium to explore the infinite. His toys are obsessively wrapped in gauze, his geometric collages have the pattern of the cloth’s loose, open weave inscribed on their surfaces, and the triptych “Script” is a close-up of the fiber, devoted entirely to its undulating pattern. Titling the gauze triptych “Script” simultaneously acknowledges the limitless possibilities within language and begs the question: is Zafar positioning bandage as text or text as a bandage?
