Welcome to Preservation Week! We are so excited to have award-winning author and member of the Cherokee Nation @TraciSorellAuthor serve as our honorary chair. Our theme this year is Preserving Identities. Cultural stewards both in and outside of libraries play an important role preserving the historical materials and knowledge that are key to understanding one’s identity. Equally important is finding ways to safeguard and share this heritage in ways that are responsive to the communities they belong to. Traci Sorell is an author whose work, experiences, and advocacy highlight the importance of this commitment. It’s Preservation Week, April 28 – May 4, 2024! This is a week to inspire action in all of us to preserve personal, family, and community collections and treasures in addition to those in library, museum, and archive collections. Preservation Week focuses on how to care for and organize our books, personal papers, photographs, and treasured possessions for current and future generations. From family letters to the hard drive storing your digital photographs, everything deteriorates over time. Preservation is the set of strategies we use to slow that deterioration down and ensure future generations have access to the things we cherish today. And when it comes to preservation, anyone can make a difference. I’ve been working on preserving, identifying and organizing my own family “treasures.” Going through these collections can evoke positive feelings. For example, looking back at old photographs is a reminder of important people, places and events in our lives. It can also show us how far we’ve come to give us hope for the future. https://preservationweek.org/resources/ #PreservationWeek #Preservation #LibraryPreservation #MuseumPreservation #ArchivesOfInstagram #Archivists #ArchivistsOfInstagram #HistoricPreservation #HistoricPreservationMatters #HeritagePreservation #LibrariesOfInstagram #Librarians

Making a custom box ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sometimes a custom box is needed when storing objects. This box is large, but it will be used to store 8 Stetson hats on mounts and a few unfinished Stetson hat pieces. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Making a custom box requires some math, but at its core it is simple to construct. This one is made with corrugated polypropylene or more familiarly known as the brand Coroplast. It is chemically stable and safe to use for long term storage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Once everything is measured, we cut slits to allow the edges to fold over and create corners. The type of adhesive used is important. We cannot use anything that can cause harm to the objects or break down over time, but it needs to be sturdy enough to hold the box together over many years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We use a small amount of hot glue in areas that will not encounter objects and to make sure the box stays together; we use solid brass fasteners. Using solid brass is important as it will not rust over time. For added protection we place linen hinging tape over the back of the fasteners. We also place clips to help hold down pieces while the glue dries. The edges of the coroplast is rounded as these can be very sharp. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The next step is to create custom hat mounts for storage and the trickiest part of all is creating the lid! #brockvillemuseum #museumwork #museumworkers #stetsonhats #museumpreservation #brockvillehistory

Most museums only display a small percentage of the items they have in their collections. At Museum of the West, about 5%-10% of our items are on display at any given time. Museum guests often ask why this is... the damage to this rug is a huge reason why! This rug used to hang in our gallery at Museum of the West where it received this irreversible light damage. One of the goals of our museum is to preserve items for continued education and appreciation in years to come. Constant light, fluctuating temperatures, human touch, and many other environmental circumstances can cause irreversible damage to priceless items in our collection. The safest place for our items is in collections storage where we can control these environmental factors. For this reason, we do not display every item in our galleries. But don't worry, this doesn't mean that 90% of our collections aren't accessible to the public! We are tirelessly working on digitizing each item in our collections, so even if you can't see them on display in person, you can still take a look on Collective Access! Does anyone remember viewing the diorama of New Harmony in the Salomon Wolf House? This computerized scale model shows the town and surrounding countryside as it appeared in 1824. It is narrated with excerpts from diaries and journals of visitors to New Harmony and also features Harmonist music. The voiceovers and mechanical features may seem a little antiquated today, but there is still something charming about seeing the little buildings light up and the model spin to provide different views. The diorama originally cost $100,000 to produce in the 1970s. Today, that price would be closer to $790,000 dollars. For the past 50 years, we have carefully maintained this diorama to keep it clean and in good working order. Today our staff opened up the model to vacuum and make any small repairs needed. #behindthescenes #museumpreservation #salomonwolfhouse

For 97 years, the Blount Mansion Association has proudly shared the storied history of the #Blount family, the founding of the state of #Tennessee, and many other local histories with generations of families across the U.S. and beyond, none of which would be possible without the continued support of our community over the years! In 1956, construction of Wharton Esherick’s new workshop was completed. The building, sited just a few steps from the Studio and nestled against the back wall of Esherick’s Expressionist style garage, was a collaborative effort between Esherick and architects Louis Kahn and Anne Tyng. Constructed of concrete block covered in stucco, the building features three connected hexagonal bays designed to create an open flow of workspace for the fabrication of Esherick’s furniture and sculpture. The ‘56 Workshop is a unique blend of each contributor, with Kahn’s modernist materials and Tyng’s inhabitable geometries bending to meet Esherick’s preference for gently curving and natural forms. This month we were excited to complete preservation work on the Workshop chimney... Museums house thousands of animal specimens that are ancient, extinct, newly discovered and have yet to be studied. New York's American Museum of Natural History has 33 million specimens inside, while the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. has a whopping 145 million holdings. While most animals collected by these institutions have been obtained legally, euthanized painlessly and researched with respect, some researchers often wonder whether there could be a better way of doing this kind of work. Two new, contrasting papers in the journal Plos Biology have ignited the debate once more. How are museum specimens collected, and is there a more ethical way to do so? How can technology help implement that change? 🔗Find the answers at the link in our bio.

It’s PRESERVATION WEEK (April 30-May 6)! Preservation Week underscores the need to save and care for the archival, local, and family history collections held by institutions–like libraries, archives, and museums–and individuals. This year’s theme is “Building Resilient Communities.” Sponsored by Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures, Preservation Week inspires action to preserve personal, family, and community collections in addition to library, museum, and archive collections. It also raises awareness of the role libraries and other cultural institutions play in providing ongoing preservation education and information. Preservation Week 2023’s Honorary Chair is Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the C. S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and founding director of the Pediatric Public Health Initiative. Dr. Hanna-Attisha says, “If history informs action and words shape thinking – preserving the truth of the lived experience is critical for our communities…Their stories of resilience and triumph show how an empowered community can demand change. When science and community come together and speak truth to power– we feel heard, seen, and thrive – and our eyes open to how society should be – a place where resilience is built into the fabric of our nation rather than demanded of our most vulnerable.” #MuseumPreservation #HistoricPreservation #Preservation #PreservationEducation #HistoricPreservationAwareness #CulturalPreservation #CulturalPreservationist #CulturalHeritagePreservation #HeritagePreservation #MLIS #MLISStudent #LibrarySchool #LibraryCollections #BookBinding #Cataloging #Cataloguing #Libraries #LibrariesOfInstagram #Librarians #LibrariansOfInstagram #Library #LibrariesTransform #LibraryLovers #preservationweek #monahannaattisha #buildingresilientcommunities

Here at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, we love a well ordered collection—which is why our storage system for framed works just about sends us over the moon. In this month's Preservation Post, we feature these useful storage racks located in one of our museum's climate controlled collections vaults. Each powder-coated steel screen is set on a heavy-duty rolling track, allowing staff to easily and safely view and access objects. For tips on how to care for your own family documents, books, and photographs—Masonic or otherwise—we invite you to take a look at our online booklet, "Caring for Your Masonic Treasures." Have you ever pulled a garment off a wire hanger to find its shoulders gone all distorted and stiff? Then you'll appreciate this month's Preservation Post, in which we feature some of our storage racks of Masonic regalia and costumes. Garments are stored on shaped plastic hangers that have been wrapped with thick polyester batting and encased in unbleached, cotton stockinette. No warped shoulders here! This image shows a mix of DeMolay and York Rite robes and regalia, among other costume items in the collection. If you’d like to see photos of them on actual people and not just hangers, there are many photos of Masonic and fraternal organization members in their regalia on our Flickr albums!
