“𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒌𝒚 𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒖𝒏” 2023 Acrylic and gold leaf on Cardboard with canvas laced together at the back (explanation below on lacing) This painting is to represent the connection we as people have to the land and sky and well as the moon and sun. All rely on each other to exist and move, without one we fall apart. The figures both represent the sun and sky, as well as the moon and water. - (expanation) Finals for this painting was on a crunch time with a very small budget but I was able to make it work with cardboard as a base rather than the original wood panel idea, and raw canvas. I used an awl to poke holes into the material and lace a cord back and forth basically lacing together the canvas to pull it tight around the cardboard while also utilizing modelling paste. It’s not perfect but it worked! Thesis Critique Photos This year has been a whirlwind. The last 3 have been insane. This is what I have to show for it. All my work, folded into thus final body of work, and I couldn't be prouder and more exhausted. This body of work is called Haven. Through life, we are taught to endure spaces of uncomfortability. Growing up as an international nomad, my experience of home is less about place and rather about a sense of safety. I connect the spaces I've come to think of as home in South Africa with the realities of suburban living in Canada. Assignment three from this semester. The title of the assignment is digital landscapes. For this piece I collaged a photo my partner took in Vancouver with a yellow to pink gradient circle and a photo I took of some orchid flowers on top. I painted the background (referencing the photo) using oil paint. The circle was made with a stencil and spray paint and then I had the orchids printed. I tediously cut out the background and then pasted it on top of the image. I’m really happy with the result of this one.
