At our next evensong, 5pm Saturday 1 June, we’ll be singing the G major service by Stanford, and the anthem ‘If ye love me’ by Philip Wilby. Philip Wilby (b. 1949) is British composer hailing from Yorkshire, who is as well-known for his compositions for brass band, as for his church music. Wilby studied at Keble College, Oxford (pictured: the chapel) before joining the music department at Leeds University. ‘If ye love me’ was written in 1992, but the timeless classicism of Wilby’s setting of these celebrated words has made it a choir favourite. W Centrum św. Jana, w piątkowy wieczór, uczestniczyliśmy w niezwykłym wydarzeniu. Przenieśliśmy się w czasy klasycznego kina niemego. Arcydzieło filmowe połączyło się z unikalnym muzycznym doświadczeniem na żywo. Projekcja niemego filmu „Męczeństwo Joanny d’Arc” z 1928 roku w reżyserii Carla Theodora Dreyera została wzbogacona o improwizowaną muzykę na organach, wykonaną przez znakomitego artystę Filipa Presseisena. „Męczeństwo Joanny d’Arc” to jedno z najważniejszych dzieł kina niemego, uznawane za arcydzieło ze względu na głęboką emocjonalną treść i innowacyjne podejście reżyserskie. Carl Theodor Dreyer stworzył film, który do dziś zachwyca autentycznością i intensywnością, opowiadając historię procesu i egzekucji francuskiej bohaterki narodowej, Joanny d’Arc. Minimalistyczny styl, skupienie na mimice twarzy oraz emocjonalny przekaz sprawiają, że widzowie czują się bezpośrednio zaangażowani w tragiczne losy Joanny. Filip Presseisen to uznany muzyk i organista, specjalizujący się w improwizacji oraz interpretacji muzyki dawnej i współczesnej. Jego twórczość cechuje się wyjątkową wrażliwością i umiejętnością dostosowania dźwięków do narracji filmowej. Presseisen wielokrotnie występował na prestiżowych festiwalach, zdobywając uznanie krytyków i publiczności. Improwizowanie muzyki na żywo do projekcji filmów niemych ma swoje korzenie w początkach XX wieku, kiedy kina często wyposażano w organy. Dzisiejszy koncert był swego rodzaju hołdem dla tej tradycji, przenosząc nas w czasie do epoki, kiedy muzyka i film łączyły się, tworząc niezwykłe doświadczenia artystyczne. Wszyscy zgromadzeni w Centrum św. Jana byliśmy poruszeni tym, jak muzyka może wzbogacić i pozwolić na głębsze zrozumienie tego arcydzieła niemego kina. ⛪️ Le grand buffet des orgues de l'église parisienne de Saint-Merry a été installé en 1647 par les facteurs Jean et François de Heman, réutilisant des éléments d'un premier orgue. 🪚 Cet instrument désormais porté à 35 jeux sur 3 claviers, reçoit un positif dorsal et deux tourelles de 16' de part et d'autre du buffet qui est l'oeuvre du menuisier Germain Pilon. ⏳️ De nombreux relevages et des modifications sont effectués tout au long des 17e et 18e siècles, ajoutant des jeux, étendant les claviers à 50 notes ou modifiant la soufflerie. Ainsi se succèdent au chevet des grands orgues les facteurs Etienne Enocq en 1664, François Ducastel et Pierre Baillon en 1669, Nicolas Collard en 1719 et 1736 et François-Henri Clicquot entre 1778 et 1782. ⚔️ Pendant la période révolutionnaire, du salpêtre est entreposé dans l'église, ce qui endommage l'instrument même s'il échappe aux pillages et aux destructions. ⚒️ En 1816, Pierre-François Dallery relève l'orgue et restitue les Pleins-Jeux disparus précédemment. 2024 is the 100th anniversary of the death of Charles Villiers Stanford, a major figure in the history of English church music. At our next evensong, 5pm Saturday June 1, we’ll be singing the G major service by Stanford, alongside the anthem ‘If ye love me’ by Philip Wilby. With its soaring soprano solo in the Magnificat, and glorious baritone solo in the Nunc dimittis, the G major setting is perhaps Stanford's best-loved evensong service. Tongue of the Trees release all laid out! The book has a series of photographic images in all made with developers made from local plant life. 🍃Most of the photographs are cameraless and a couple of colour images using a microscope. Etchings and screen prints were also created using a bark pigment. The work has looked to work with the trees and be as sustainable as possible in the making process. The field recordings/organ music and booklet are available on cassette and comes with digital download. Am Sonntag, den 16. Juni, laden die Kirchengemeinden St. Lambertus und St. Bonifatius sowie Stiftskantor Alexander Rohm zur Veranstaltung „Mit dem Fahrrad zur Musik“ ein. Mit dem „Auszug aus Ägypten“ für Sprecher und Orgel beginnen wir um 13.30 Uhr in der Kirche St. Lambertus (Hoetmar). Für Große und Kleine wird die biblische Erzählung ein packendes Ereignis. Der Text wird von Sebastian Bause vorgetragen und von Alexander Rohm an der Orgel umrahmt. Den ersten Weg radeln wir zur Wallfahrtskapelle Buddenbaum, in der es um 14.40 Uhr mit kammermusikalischen Klängen weitergehen wird. Sie werden Kirsten Terbeck an der Querflöte, am Cello Jonke Ast sowie an der Orgel Alexander Rohm hören. Um die letzte Station Stiftskirche St. Bonifatius (Freckenhorst) zu erreichen, haben wir zuerst den Weg mit dem Rad zurückzulegen. Noted composer, Phillip Cooke, has written a new organ work for Carlisle Cathedral. It is based on the plainsong melody known as ‘O lux beata Trinitas’ – which is appropriate as Carlisle Cathedral is dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. The piece will receive its world premiere at Evensong on Trinity Sunday, 26 May, played by our Organ Scholar, David T. Shingler. The full title of the piece is “Recessional on O lux beata Trinitas”. Phillip Cooke was born in Penrith and grew up in the Lake District, so has strong local connections. He is now Professor of Music at the University of Aberdeen and his compositions have been performed all over the world.
