Often the best ones will make you look twice - drawing in your viewer and allowing your photo to make them happy (an added bonus) All too often today on social media our pictures are out there to show off where we are and whether we want to or not make people jealous of our whereabouts. It is amazing to be able to take a picture and the viewer to enjoy and smile at the picture rather than feel they are missing out or making them jealous. So try and find something fun in the mundane and make someone happy 😁. Last week I posted that I was sending out tips to my newsletter subscribers with tips on how to take amazing summer vacation photos. I have never had so many new subscribers in one day 😂 So seeing as that’s such a popular topic, I thought I’d give it a permanent spot on my feed and share those tips here! (Bonus shameless plug if you want to sign up for the newsletter so you don’t miss future tips, the link is in my profile!) Here are my 10 Tips for Taking Amazing Summer Vacation Photos: 1. The best camera is the one you have with you. Unless you want to spend years learning how to use a professional camera and editing images, just use your phone. It’s an amazing little camera! (These are film pics but phone is great!) 2. Backlight! Put the sun behind and to the side of your subjects (45 degrees is a good rule of thumb). 3. Get on their level. Use those leg muscles! Squat down and be level with your tiny subjects! 4. Use the rule of thirds. Imagine your image is divided into 3 equal parts horizontally and vertically, those lines and intersecting points are where your eye is drawn to…use them! 5. Fill the frame! Get in close and fill the frame with your subject. 6. Don’t crop at a joint! Avoid chopping your subject just above or on a joint. Either include the whole limb or intentionally crop away from the joint. 7. Details matter. Don’t forget about those details of summer, like the sand pouring from your toddler’s shovel or the flowers on your evening walk. 8. Photograph the moments too. Those in-between moments make the best photos! 9. Get in the photo! One day, your kids will want photos with you in them. Do them that favor and get in the photos. Ask a stranger, prop your phone up, hand it to another kid, whatever it takes make sure you’re documented too! 10. Enjoy your vacation first, take pics second. Only do what adds joy to your vacation! When I had first met with M & L for their engagement session I could tell this was going to be SUCH a chill and loving photoshoot! I always used to write off shooting during day when the light was very harsh. You are always told to shoot primarily during the ‘golden hours’. This is very stifling for creativity and means you pass up on the opportunity to get some great shots and also limits your hours of shooting a huge amount! My first tip is looking for areas of high contrast, once you start looking you will be amazed at how many shots will become available to you. Even better, wait patiently for a subject to walk through the frame and you will create a great photo with some subject intrigue. Keep an eye out for the fun things around you. If you actually look there will often be graffiti or something of the like that has made what should be an everyday object into something fun to shoot. Often the best ones will make you look twice - drawing in your viewer and allowing your photo to make them happy (an added bonus) All too often today on social media our pictures are out there to show off where we are and whether we want to or not make people jealous of our whereabouts. It is amazing to be able to take a picture and the viewer to enjoy and smile at the picture rather than feel they are missing out or making them jealous. This photography tip not many people like. If you get up early you will pretty much have the place to yourself. Even with landmarks, cities and tourist attractions becoming ever more busy there is one thing that still lives on strong… that is people’s affinity to sleep! I am always shocked by just how quiet incredibly popular and crowded places are first thing in the morning. Just a few weeks ago we were in Rome and got up for sunrise and we had the Pantheon to ourselves! It remains one of life’s easiest cheat codes, and allows you to take much more atmospheric photos, as well as take in the site in peace. Are you a morning person? Colour Contrasts 🔴🟠🟡🟢🔵🟣 This can be the easiest thing to spot once you start looking for it - in Europe I’ve found that it’s often window frames against a house that create an obvious contrast and really draw my eye, but it’s really all over the place. Did you ever have to study the colour wheel when you were in primary school? At the time, I didn’t really get it, but it’s a great way of figuring out what colours are “opposites”, technically speaking. You don’t need to be technical at all though to use your eyes to see what colours attract your attention. As a photographer who started last October and has mainly had bare trees and overcast for my sessions, I am absolutely lovingggg these sunny days 🤩 For this session T & K drove from Cobourg to have a sunset photoshoot in Presquile Provincial Park and I am so happy the skies showed up for us! This was their first time visiting the park and I was so happy to walk one of the most popular trails with them. Just as they arrived the sun was shining through the trees and I couldn’t resist getting a few photos before hitting the trail! After that we walked through a cedar forest, and ended up on the boardwalk in the middle of the beautiful marsh. What an amazing night! 😍 A&R were so much fun to hang out with and A was absolutely glowinnng. ✨ Would you believe me if I told you this was my first beach session ever? 🫣 Being completely new to this type of landscape I was a bit anxious to create the images in my mind, but as soon as we started shooting they all disappeared.
