I believe a tripod may be the most important piece of kit to level up your creative photography. As someone, who for many years, didn’t want to lug around this three legged albatross, I get it. Many just don’t want to bother, can’t see the value, or think it’s only for the pros. But other than its obvious purpose: as a support for a camera, the second most important function is that it serves to slow you down, making you more intentional about your composition, and the elements within it. In theory, this should motivate you to fully look over the frame, from edge to edge, to ensure that nothing was left out, or more likely, that something extraneous and distracting wasn’t left in. Photography, as an art form, is subtractive rather than additive. Painters, and other two dimensional artists, begin with a blank canvas or paper, and then begin to add elements to purposefully build their scene. Whereas photographers are handed a pre existing scene, one that must be explored and discovered by moving within it, in order to find or eliminate the elements that create the most captivating composition. While the painter moves his brush, we must move our feet, changing our position within our given scene, eliminating distractions, and distilling down to the most compelling image possible. Always remember, we walk within our art, and are encompassed by it. So the answer to the question is, Yes, you need a tripod, if you take your creative photography seriously, and desire to advance.
