Marine Corps Historic Half: recap pt.1 I guess😅. 😳 “one of the closer finishes in the race’s 17 year history.” After I led for the first 9 miles, Sam caught up to me. We took turns going back and forth, we gave each other a fist bump as a “good work, keep pushing”, but also because we knew what was about to happen. . . Just before the hills he pulled away slightly. I said, “As long as I can keep him no more than 50-100 meters ahead, after the hills, I’ll drop the hammer and catch him!” As he was supposed to, he capitalized on the opportunity when I “relaxed” on the hills, he started pushing hard. After the hills, I dropped the hammer, telling myself, “We got this, we can catch him!” Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough. I gave it my all and I’m truly happy about that. I was glad he raced smart, took advantage of the moment and gave it his all. @brewdogofficial (of the unleaded persuasion) for a Devil Dog. My schedule did not permit being able to travel to VA for the @marinecorpsmarathon Historic Half to run in memory of LCpl Austin Schwenk, a local Marine who was killed in October 2023, so I decided to support his family by running it virtually (unfortunately I didn’t realize there was a virtual option until after the fact or I would have signed up for that🤦♀️…oh well). I was hoping to get under 3 hours and somehow I pulled it off. 13.1 miles completed in 2:46. Not too shabby for stopping to take pictures (and, of course, doing more walking than something that might resemble running LOL and especially since I haven’t been doing much of the latter these last couple of years and have been out of commission for the past 3 weeks due to hip issues). I am not fond of the distance, not by any stretch of the imagination, and every time I do a HM, I say I’m never doing another one (with my last “never again” 3 years ago🤪) only to go the distance once again when there is meaning behind it. I did have the opportunity to meet Austin and got to know his parents so it made it personal plus like Austin, my hubby was in 2/6 and while the two of them had never met, it gave me more motivation as to why on God’s green earth I would attempt that distance when I was completely not even remotely trained for it. None of the miles were easy, but surprisingly enough, I had a couple splits that were in the 10s. How? I’d like to think it was inspiration from above. Without fail, however, by mile 10, I had hit the wall. I was determined that no matter how bad I hurt, I was going to run without stopping the last mile no matter what. Not only did I somehow pull it off, it was my 3rd fastest mile, even faster than my first. Go figure. No cheering fans, no official finish line to cross, and no finisher’s medal for the first race I have done in over a year, virtual, or otherwise, and a distance I haven’t done in 3, but that’s ok. I did it for Austin and as a show of support for his family and those who love him, and that’s all that matters. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 #RunWiththeMarines #EveryMileAMemory #RunCLE

My heart is so happy. My friend @tristahobbs flew up to spend the weekend with me and do the @marinecorpsmarathon Historic Half. It was so nice to spend the weekend with her. In early March of 2023, I told my student’s momma that I would be out for a few days in March because I was traveling for my first half marathon and she told me I was crazy. October 30, 2022: the Marine Corps Marathon! One of the best organized and funnest marathons I ever did. Known as ‘the people’s marathon’ a field of 30,000 runners start at the Pentagon, running to Rosslyn, Georgetown, Haines Point, along the Mall towards the Capitol, back into Virginia through Crystal City ending at Arlington with the medal presentation at the Iwo Jima memorial. Organized by a detachment of Marines, the water and aid stations are staffed by enthusiastic Marines given you a well timed ooh-rah when your flagging. Half marathon 73: Marine Corps Historic Half in Fredericksburg, VA. This is my 4th time completing this race and yes, it’s still in my top 5 favorite half marathons! No conflict with the date this year, as my Delta chapter scheduled our May Week luncheon for Saturday instead of the 3rd Sunday. This race is historically hot as Hades, but not this year. Although temps were in the low 60s, humidity replaced the heat. It was thick out there. The 6:00am start time was new as well, folks there’s a big difference between 6am and 7am. I wore DST Camo to honor our military Sorors without knowing the back of the race medal celebrates women in service. Yes I will be back again… kinda wish there was a Historic Half 5-year runners club like the one for MCM (hint hint). This Half Marathon was incredibly emotional and powerful. I’ve never felt so patriotic, and had an overwhelming gratefulness for those who serve this country. Many Veterans cheered on runners in full uniform, and runners stopped to thank them and shake their hands. Many active military cheered and supported. Then there was Mile 10 when we ran past the photos of fallen soldiers. I saw Brittany’s hero sister Ashley, and then, the very last photo before all the flags, was Austin. 😭 Talk about an emotional experience. So glad I could do this with many others who loved Austin. First half marathon in the books fueled by @bpnsupps 🏃🏼♀️ It took a lot to get here. Somewhere around week 8 of OCS I knew something was wrong. Came to TBS and was diagnosed with a hip fracture that set me back at least 6 weeks and dropped me from my training company. About a week after getting cleared to run and lift again, I ended up having to have my appendix removed which added another 4 weeks of recovery time. A lot of emotions, blood, sweat, and tears went into preparing for this. For me, this was my final test to feel prepared to train again and I will finally start with a new training company in two weeks. Life is good. I love my job. Semper Fidelis🦅 #runwiththemarines
It ain’t much but it’s honest work. Another race down and a 3peat for the @marinecorpsmarathon Historic Half in Fredricksburg. Now a well deserved break from sanctioned racing for a few months to enjoy the family and the summer. Will be involved with @r_rcoachingandnutrition @tonya_reynolds21 @prestonreynolds88 to chip away at this marble slab and get ready for a possible stage presence in 2025.
