Last weekend, together with the Noe Valley/Sally Brunn branch of the @sfpubliclibrary we hosted a great group of regular Shaping San Franciscans and new-to-us neighborhood folks on our @shapingsf Settling of Early Noe Valley walking tour. This look at the development of Jesus de José Noé’s Rancho San Miguel into distinct residential enclaves, concentrations of industries like quarrying and dairies, and the people who played a part also included gorgeous looks at the extant natural landscape. We saw Ithuriel’s Spear in bloom on chert hillsides, took unpaved paths up Castro Street and Billy Goat Hill, and enjoyed a beautiful Saturday stroll. Participants added to the knowledge shared, in true participatory history telling! . If you wanted to join us, but couldn’t, we plan to schedule the tour with the library again next Spring! . #shapingsf @indyartssf #historyisacreativeactinthepresent #historicalmemory #historylovers #knowyourcity #sfhistory #sf #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscohistory #knowyourcityshistory #walkingtour #historicalwalkingtour #walkyourcity #noevalley #billygoathill #ranchosanmiguel

This exhibit will be on display at CHSA’s presentation of Chinese American Stories, as part of the Cultural Festival in Chinatown. Where: Victory Hall, 827 Stockton Street, SF Chinatown When: TODAY! 1-5PM. Special Collections: Chinese Opera During the California Gold Rush, Chinese immigrants were not allowed to attend whites-only performance houses. This prompted them to carry on their own theatrical traditions by importing touring groups. The 123-member Tung Hook Tong Company performed the first Chinese Opera in 1852 at the American Theater. Men played both the male and female roles, and featured a traditional sampling of historical music and drama. While the traditions of Chinese theater were originally criticized and ridiculed by the press, the genre expanded during the late 19th century. Popularity grew for Chinese opera by westernizing some of the techniques, such as providing translated synopses of the scores, cutting out culturally objectionable scenes, and by introducing the final bow to performing groups. The first permanent Chinese theater, the Hing Chuen Yuen Theater (translated as "Prosperous Complete Origin"), was opened on Jackson Street in 1868. It quickly became a center for cultural life to Chinese-Americans, as well as a popular tourist attraction. It’s one of the stranger markings you’ll see on mail: “From Noisy Carrier’s.” But what does it mean? Charles P. Kimball arrived in San Francisco in July 1849, and after several failed business ventures he started a book, newspaper, and stationery store at 77 Long Wharf in San Francisco. One of the services he provided was carrying mail from his shop to departing steamships for carriage to the East Coast (typically via Nicaragua). But where did the odd name come from? Kinball was known for selling newspapers on the streets of San Francisco by shouting their names and prices in rhyming verse; hence, he was a labeled a “noisy carrier,” and the name stuck. #postalhistory #stampcollecting #stampcollector #postalhistorian #stampcollection #stamps #stamp #postagestamps #postagestamp #philatelist #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscohistory

It's Harvey Milk Day in San Francisco! 🌈✨ Today, we celebrate the legacy of Harvey Milk, a trailblazer who championed equality and inspired many others to continue his fight. Like many San Franciscans, Harvey Milk never gave up. In 1977, he became the first openly gay elected official in the United States, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations. He fought tirelessly for LGBTQ+ rights and other marginalized communities, advocating for anti-discrimination laws, affordable housing, public transportation, and social justice. San Francisco is more than just a place where new ideas come to life; it's a beacon of hope and a sanctuary for those who dare to dream and strive for a better, more inclusive world. Let's honor his memory by continuing to strive for inclusivity and progress here in San Francisco and around the world. #HarveyMilkDay Learn more about Harvey Milk and why SF is an international gay mecca at the link in our bio.

Collection Spotlight: Lotta Crabtree In 1875, Lotta presented San Francisco with an ornate drinking fountain situated at the bustling crossroads of Market and Kearny Streets. Starting her career as a child star in San Francisco, she eventually ascended to become the most highly compensated actress in the entire nation. Her heartfelt gesture was a testament to her enduring gratitude for the city that had propelled her to stardom. From 1850 to 1858, San Francisco operated Yerba Buena Cemetery on land bordered by Market, Larkin and McAllister Streets. Today, this area includes the Asian Art Museum, Main Library, UN Plaza & more. . Between 7,000 and 9,000 early San Franciscans were buried in Yerba Buena, including indigent and Chinese workers who built the city. In 1867 and 1868, the city exhumed almost 1,900 of the Yerba Buena dead. More than 200 graves have been discovered since, during construction in the area. . During construction of the current Main Library in 1992-1993, archaeologists found small bones and teeth belonging to somewhere between 59 and 745 people who’d been buried there earlier. Soil excavated from the Main Library site was taken to the city dump in Brisbane, where a worker spotted bone fragments and alerted the police to a possible homicide. . It’s likely that these remnants belonged to people who’d been exhumed previously. Their long bones would have been removed, while small bones were left behind. When they found nasal bones, they found that every single one had been broken and most had healed fully. The archaeologists theorized that fist fights and “drunken brawling” were common. . Fragments may remain beneath the library, and graves certainly remain within the Yerba Buena Cemetery footprint. This is still a cemetery. @sfpubliclibrary . . . #yerbabuena #yerbabuenacemetery #civiccenter #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscohistory #goldrush #californiahistory #cemeteries #cemetery #graveyard #graveyards

Alcatraz San Francisco, CA Roughly one mile offshore, in the gusty waters of the San Francisco Bay is Alcatraz Island also known as “The Rock”. Most famous for being a maximum security federal prison who housed society’s worst degenerates. During the years of 1934-1963, the penitentiary was in operation. It is one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist attractions with up to 1.5 million visitors a year. Ruthless criminals and gangsters like Al Capone aka “Scarface”, George “Machine Gun Kelly”, Robert Stroud “The Birdman”, James “Whitey” Bulger and Alvin Karpis (the first “Public Enemy #1”) all served time in the cold cells on Alcatraz. It was the “last resort” prison with no hopes of rehabilitation, one of America’s most notorious. Tough, dangerous, inhumane and brutal were among the conditions inmates were faced with. In the 29 years in operations, 36 inmates (2 men trying twice) attempted to escape. They found themselves either caught, shot or they drowned in the icy cold temperatures of the bay. Dark history of San Francisco’s past, the most haunted cell is 14-D, known as “the hole”. Solitary confinement was small, dark and damp...Stranded on the lonely island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, would you dare- “Escape from Alcatraz”? A place for conversation. If you sit for a drink, or a date, in one particular leather-bound nook across from the bar @theinterval, you might notice a single framed picture that hangs from the lamp above your head. The archival image and text includes an 01863 photograph of Jessie Benton Fremont on the porch of a small victorian home nicknamed “Porters Lodge” that was situated at “Black Point” - the small rocky peninsula that is now the site of @theinterval and @fortmasoncenter. Benton was the daughter of Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton and was married to military officer and early explorer John C. Fremont. Raised in Washington D.C., Benton was a prolific writer and author who brought political activism, abolitionist beliefs, and an intellectual sensibility to San Francisco (despite living at a time when women were discouraged from these activities) and drew intellectuals, celebrities, and artists, to literary and political salons held at the home. It’s interesting to think that this particular part of San Francisco has been a place for conversation, discourse, and intellectual pursuits for over 160 years - a tradition that @theinterval carries on to this day. In 1894, San Francisco hosted the California Midwinter International Exposition from January 27 through July 5. The Exposition, hosted in Golden Gate Park, encompassed approximately 200 acres around where the Music Concourse stands today. 120 structures were built for the fair, including the grand Fine Arts Building, which later became the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum. Other attractions included the Japanese Tea Garden, Bonet Tower, Boone’s Wild Animal Show, a diverse offering of restaurants and foods, Dante’s Inferno, the Firth Wheel, and the flirtatious Gum Girls, whose controversial ankle-revealing dresses stirred up much conversation. It was the first international exposition hosted on the west coast and received nearly 2.5 million visitors.

Took this picture while cruising on an electric City Bike, which was way heavier than I thought it would be. 😅 #SanFranciscoCityHall #CityHall #ArchitectureLovers #CityBiking #UrbanExploration #CitySights #HistoricLandmarks #CityAdventures #ExploreSanFrancisco #UrbanLandmarks #TravelPhotography #SanFranciscoHistory #CityScenes #CityLove #CityViews #CityPhotography #Wanderlust
