Cervical radiculopathy refers to neurological changes, such as numbness and weakness in the arms and hands, due to an issue originating in the neck - most commonly a herniated disc or degenerative changes that encroach on a nerve. Other characteristics include pain, reduced range of motion, and symptoms in the scapular region. Since it has a favorable natural history and outcomes between surgical and nonsurgical treatment are similar, nonoperative management is usually the first recommendation. Exercises should focus on improving function, such as strength and range of motion of the neck, upper back, and shoulders, rather than trying to change the structure of your spine. Well, if it always comes back one of the possible causes can be referral from the tissues in the neck. You see when there is malalignment and compression on specific structures in the neck… It can refer literally to the exact spot between the spine and the shoulder blade tricking you into trying to massage it with a ball or whatever other tool you have. In this video, I demonstrate the first strategy we would use to start gaining realignment and reducing that pressure. When I first started yoga I would never have guessed the very practice I chose as a way to help heal my pain could actually be making things worse. The truth is, yoga wasn’t making my pain worse, it was how I was approaching it that was the problem. From day one, my perception of what we were doing in these yoga poses was stretching. My body is built fairly flexible so I felt right at home doing a bunch of bendy poses that are supposed to be beneficial for health. Before long, I started to recognize I felt achy and kinda beat up after practice and classes. My teachers would encourage more lengthening, work for the pose, stretch! Despite my efforts to get deeper in the poses, my body felt crappier and crappier. Somehow a light went on, I think it was when I was looking deeply at Iyengar’s poses in light on Yoga. I could see how much muscle energy was in his poses. I played with a few ideas and it was like lightning struck. What a DIFFERENCE! When I intentionally used my muscles to create accurate movement in the joints, the practice felt completely different. It felt comfortable, invigorating! When I learned to use muscle to create a solid foundation and then accurately move my joints I realized I was no long hanging on joints and ligaments and pushing into that terrible “stretch” feeling. If this sounds like that path of your practice, I can speak from experience: making the shift from “stretching” to learning how your muscles generate real join motion can be life changing!! Sciatica💫 . The Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve⚡️in the body. It is made up of several spinal nerves that converge and run from your low back to your knee before it branches off and continues to the foot. This thing is huge and runs deep to the glutes and down the back of the thigh. The leading cause of sciatica symptoms is a lumbar disc herniation/bulge. . Folks experiencing sciatica symptoms generally report: 🔻shooting pain from the low back, glutes or along the path of the sciatic nerve 🔻weakness in the leg 🔻numbness/tingling down the leg, into the foot 🔻symptoms aggravating with being seated . ⚠️Each case is very different and responds differently to treatment, these exercises may be the opposite of what you need! So, be smart, be kind to yourself and if something is making you worse STOP DOING IT. Evaluation, people! . 🗣Quick soapbox: “sciatica” is a symptom, NOT a condition.
