Sissy Hankshaw 2024 What. A. Vibe. It was the most random, fun and “out of my comfort zone” day I think I’ve ever had! If you were out and about on Saturday in Durban North you may have seen 70 odd adults dressed up in all sorts of crazy costumes (think Buzz Lightyear, Vikings, Cowboys, and even giant sperms) missioning around for the day. You may even have spotted some of us on TV at the rugby. What was it all about? Sissy Hankshaw is a day where people dress up as anything they’d like and pub crawl, completing fun tasks or challenges along the way. Kind of like the amazing race, but it’s not actually a race, is less pressured, the only winner is “best dressed”, and it includes a few more drinks along the way. There are tasks and challenges to do at each stop which added another level of fun to the day. BUT here is the kicker: you don’t know where your next stop on the tour is until the organizers announce it at each stop, and you must hitch hike to get there! I had never heard of the event before my friends invited me to join them and was very nervous about the whole thing. But honestly, I needn’t have worried because we were so well taken care of throughout the day. A highlight was having to do carpool karaoke on one of the rides we got with a stranger (hilarious - wish I could share that video but won’t because I obviously can’t get permission from our stranger driver and his mate). The other great thing was that our day ended at a Sharks game at Kingston Beach Club at the stadium! This was the 19th year it’s been held in Durban and I’ll 100% be back next year for the 20th!
