Tiger Sniffs the Rose 2022 Naka White Tea The dry leaves of this tea are not only beautiful to look at, with a colour palette of rich browns and vintage creams, all of which are covered in trichomes, but they have an aroma filled with sumptuous notes of vintage books, autumn leaves, dark woods, wild flowers, stewed cherries and vanilla sponge. The addition of water brought out rosewood, heightened notes of vintage books and linen lined wicker baskets into the mix. The flavour profile starts with a floral sweetness and juicy red apple notes, moving into notes of rosewood, creamy porridge with apricot compote, yogurt coated peaches, vintage books, almond bread, aged hay, brown rock sugar & vanilla sponge cake. From clay, it tastes like a second flush Darjeeling, with autumn leaf notes, muscat grapes and a great level of minerality. It has a creamy coating texture with a medium thickness to start, but it gets thicker as steeps progress. A slight dryness is present towards the back of the tongue and a little on the cheeks, but does not hinder enjoyment. The finish has a long lasting fresh creaminess, with lingering notes of old books and autumn leaves and dried strawberries. Sipping it out of clay intensified the creaminess but muted other elements. When picking a piece of art to pair with tea, I wanted to avoid being too literal, as that wouldn't be reflective of the experiences I've had with it. Instead I wanted a piece that was dramatic & warm, featuring some of the stand out aspects such as the rosewood, the indulgent creaminess, the lingering sweetness and the fruity & dessert elements, as well as linking to those vintage books and autumnal notes and A Table Of Desserts was the first piece that came to mind. De Heem was the most celebrated still life painter of his day and is best known for his still life pieces of flowers and fruit, arranged around elaborate platters, glasses and goblets. A Table Of Desserts is one of his oldest large-format, still life paintings, with a rich symbolic meaning relating to vanity and the fleeting nature of life and its pleasures.

I recently reviewed Mei Leaf’s Young Gushu 2022, but sadly that session fell a little bit flat for me. So for this #shengsunday I decide to sip on the 2023 Young Gushu to see how they compare. The dry leaves don’t have much aroma overall aside from subtle citrus peel, slate and cream notes. That aroma changes drastically with the addition of water, with notes of lemon sherbet hard candy, light caramel and wet slate. Each steep is golden, viscous and reminiscent of clarified butter, until around steep four where it becomes a little more orange / light copper overall, but still has those rich yellow undertones. Taste Notes Clay: Sweet lemon, spring grass, lemon and white chocolate tarts, mock orange (flowers), chamomile, syrupy sweet cloudy apple juice, cinnamon whipped cream and a starchy potato skin quality. Porcelain: French butter, mock orange (flowers), dried guava, frozen greek yogurt, syrupy sweet cloudy apple juice and a bright citrus bite that dissipates quickly, leaving a sweet citrus in its place. The spiciness was more of an outright spice note and didn’t have the added creaminess. It is smooth and thick in texture, which is noticeably different from 2022. 2023 however has a long lasting finish with minerality, green apple dryness, herbaceous citrus and a bright sweetness. It has a bitter-sweet transformation from both cups, though that transformation is much quicker when sipped from clay. Without a doubt I prefer Young Gushu 2023 over 2022. It is much more complex and better suited to my taste buds overall. It also had more endurance than the 2022, lasting double the steeps. Art Pairing: Vincent van Gogh Still Life (Nature morte) May 1888. Oil on canvas Painted not long after he moved to Arles, the vase and teacup featured were regularly featured in still life pieces throughout his time in there. Both the color palette and subjects of this piece pair perfectly with aroma and flavor profiles of this tea, in a way that no other painting could.

A yellow tea? Tea names can be confusing! Sometimes the color mentioned in a tea's name is not an indicator for the tea's category. Some of you might know that Anji Bai Cha (Anji White Tea) is actually processed as a green tea. This tea's name is 黄金芽 huang jin ya - yellow gold buds. It is a newer green tea type from Zhejiang province named after the yellow color of the leaf. The tea soup also looks more yellow than green. Still not a yellow tea. This tea is often bought as a gift because of the unusual leaf, the name also has positive connotations in Chinese. This tea is very delicate and light but is very soothing and pleasant to drink with no bitterness or adstringency. Note that light and delicate flavors are indicator of a high-quality tea in China. Brewing up @white2tea's original smoked sheng pu'erh, 2021 Pyrolad, as we head into the evening. I started the day with a more bright and soft session of white tea, but as the day has progressed, the teas I've picked out have gradually gotten more intense leading up to, well, here. This is a very smoky tasting pu'erh with some welcome roughness around the edges that (in my opinion) just adds to the overall complexity and layers of taste and texture. The liquor is almost more of a broth, with a strong upfront pine smoke tinged with snaps of bitter greens and tobacco. All of that culminates in a very savory finish that then suddenly breaks into a lingering sweetness in the back of the mouth and throat. It's such an incredibly distinct and unique tea; I'm always really grateful to W2T for getting as experimental as they do with their smoked tea collection because the results are always so striking!! I will probably continue to nurse this tea for the rest of the evening until the leaves have nothing left to give... 🔥🍵

One is depicted with his mouth closed, the other with his mouth open, representing the first and last syllables of a religious script. Enjoying a very laid-back session of @white2tea's 2022 Scrye black tea this morning. I decided to go with a mini of this hong cha just to keep things as simple as possible since I still have virtually no energy. Even lifting my kettle feels tiring right now. Steeps today were very, very long and unmeasured but it's working for me - especially since the lingering congestion I'm experiencing is making everything taste just a bit more flat/dull then it would be normally. Even still, I'm getting a nice mix of malt, golden raisin, and allspice notes - the overall profile really makes me think of spice cake. Dense, and comforting. Plus, bonus points for not getting super bitter and astringent even with my arguably botched steeping. It's a baby step in getting back to a regular routine after a relatively miserable and long feeling week of being sick.
Teatime snacks! Introducing two of my favorite tea time snacks to you, delicacies from Anhui Province in China. Unfortunately, they are quite difficult to source here in Europe. First one is called 香榧 xiang fei (Torreya grandis). With shell, it vaguely resembles a nutmeg. The inner part is crunchy, nutty and to quote my dad 'gets more fragrant with each bite'. The second treat looks like a mini pecan and is called 山核桃 shan he tao (Mountain Walnut, Chinese Hickory, Carya cathayensis). With the shell still intact, it looks like a macadamia (with shell) and is also roughly the same size. Here, I am pairing them with a green tea. Vietnam Day 09: Spent the entire day with Dung from the Hồ Thầu Tea Cooperative. First, we visited the garden from which the cooperative sources fresh leaves. The trees have not been pruned in 5 years, and you can tell that the canopies of the trees have returned, some have 2 meters of new growth. We then returned to the cooperative and Dung and I dry-fried maocha then boiled it, a traditional tea preparation method that used to be widespread among the Dao and H'Mong people in Ha Giang but has since died out. On Lalashan today and we’re making GABA Oolong. The land here is just beautiful. And it produces even more beautiful tea. Farmer Zeng, AKA Taiwan Santa Claus, doesn’t use pesticides but rather plants wild grasses so the bugs have something to eat. You can see the tea bushes along with the grasses in the second photo. All the visitors at @rijksmuseum were rushing to see the Rembrandts, Van Goghs and Vermeers. Me, just casually strolling through their room dedicated to Yixing teapots. They have some pots from the 17th and 18th century, heavily decorated with playful motifs inspired but flora and fauna. Plum blossoms, vines and dragons/lions were a popular choice. They also have a polished teapot from the 19th century. They also have a section of European teapots that were trying to copy the Yixing style, like Image 9. The additional red glaze was used to cover up the color of the local clay. This work is from around 1850. The last teapot is a modern teapot from 1996 and is a collaboration between a Dutch and a Chinese potter. Sipping away at a session of strongly steeped Sticky Rice Shou from @yunnan_sourcing this afternoon! I'm dealing with covid for the third time and I have absolutely no energy, so this is probably the only bit of gongfu I'll muster for the next little while - this was exhausting to steep. However, the slick and jet black liquor of this ripe pu'erh was so soothing on my.raw throat; like the tea form of a salve. The super starchy, straight forward sticky rice notes with this very brothy and earthy-leaning tea was very grounding too, with a relaxing taste overall. I have such a love of Nuo Mi Xiang (sticky Rice herb); it's a deeply comforting flavour and I wish it was more commonly utilized in scenting or blending with teas - I don't know if I've ever seen it used with a black tea, for example, but the combo would be divine I'm sure!

Sometimes herbals can be too earthy, but this has a brightness to it while warm that I am loving. It smells like spearmint, but has a different pop to it. The herb is the sideritis plant, called Mountain Tea in Greece, that is high in antioxidants and flavonoids like many other tisanes and teas. Hippocrates suggested it was a stimulant due to high iron content. Dioskorides recommended it for cold treatment. I'm enjoying the first of my 2024 spring green teas today! This is Cloud Mist green from @white2tea. It's the first green tea I've ordered from China. I usually gravitate toward steamed Japanese green teas, but I wanted to branch out this year. That and w2t was right, the FOMO was real after I decided to opt out of their green tea sale last year. This tea has a nice texture. It's buttery, but not quite as rich and viscous as some of the steamed teas I've had. The brew is a light greenish yellow colour when brewed gongfu style. I brewed it about five times in my gaiwan (4g, ~125mL @ 85°C), then dumped the leaves in a mug and brewed it grandpa style throughout the afternoon. After trying this tea, I'm interested in trying more green tea from China. However, steamed Japanese green teas like shincha and sencha still have my heart. This afternoon, I'm enjoying a session of 2023 Year of The Rabbit Yiwu raw pu'erh while diving into a new manga. Since @bitterleafteas just dropped their first batch of Spring pu'erh, I thought it would be a good time to revisit this past year's pressing. This session showcased a lot of the elements that really make me love Yiwu productions. For starters, the liquor has notable body but is also very round and soft feeling. It's also fairly sweet, with more of a fruity profile than anything else: stonefruits such as honeyed peaches and apricot but lightly tinged with a bit of citrus. Very approachable but without lacking in interesting nuances of taste and texture. . I always wonder if my tastes in raw pu'erh will shift away from what Yiwu offers, and though they've definitely broadened since first getting into sheng I can say with confidence that this is definitely still my favourite pu'erh producing region. I'm so excited to add another cake of BLT'S "Year of The" Zodiac series to the pumidor - it's a Spring tea highlight of mine every year!! . Do you have a favourite pu'erh producing region??

Steeping up a late afternoon session of 2016 Fu Zhuan Si Xian Ji Fu from @camellia.sinensis and just marveling at the many, many beautiful golden flowers in this delicious dark tea. The session starts in a way that almost feels broody with heavier notes of forest undergrowth, cloves, and burnt parchment or antique books. It does brighten up a little bit, though that smokiness stays pretty consistent over most of the steeps. The big shift is in the presence of sweeter notes of ripe apples. I don't always get this type of honeyed apple note from heicha, but when I do it's a favourite. Overall, it's a very complex and layered tea with a great body feeling that slowly builds up with each infusion. Dang, do I love a good fu brick! Golden flowers are just so delicious!! 🌱🏵🍵
Tea'dittude: Vacation Gold A European hotel welcomes me with a mini golden chocolate cake. This called for a tea pairing, with an unreal view. Luckily I had a @davidstea Moringa Strawberry tisane with me, a warm, comforting, sweet and slightly tart (yet not artificially sweet) tea to balance the delicious treat. Easing into the day with a morning tea session of @white2tea's 2021 1 Absolution raw pu'erh. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this tea, but I found the mouthfeel surprisingly quite soft with early steeps leaning a little sweeter and made up of tasting notes that made me think of peach or apricot flavoured cotton candy. The undertones are a little more vegetal and this becomes most apparent in the edamame-heavy finishing notes, which also had a lightly metallic tasting mineral note. As the session progressed, the flavours seemed to shift until this was more veg than sweet spun sugar - though the mouthfeel stayed a consistent, satin-like texture throughout. Though maybe a little too vegetal for my own tastes, I did feel like this was a very gentle way to ease into the day and the tea overall was quite approachable feeling. I would be soooo curious to hear from anyone else who has tried this sheng though, since my experience with this session feels pretty at odds with how W2T describes the tea...

This pot is just too ridiculous! I usually try to wait until morning in Seattle to post but I can’t do it 😅 So this potter Chen Mingtang who we used to get some wood fired work from, he went to Yixing to train in teapot making in the 90’s. This I knew. What I didn’t know is that he brought back a little supply of Zini (purple Yixing clay) and has been aging it ever since! And recently when working with charcoal fired kilns he decided to make a small batch. Wow! So this is a Taiwanese charcoal fired aged Yixing clay pot. His craftsmanship is so detailed and unique, his stuff has a slightly brutal post modern feel that I love. I’ll post some of his other pots in stories in case you forgot what his more standard stuff looks like. I have been creating content centered around tea for just over nine years now, and I would say that it is undoubtedly one of my greatest passions and the creative outlet that I have stuck with the longest. While there have been changes over time, each one of them has helped me to develop not only my little corner of the internet, but also myself as a person. However over the last year or so I have been so eager to change things up a little bit and I've toyed with a few ideas over that time, but never felt fully passionate about any of them until recently when I sat and thought to myself about my passion for art and art history and found myself questioning why I had never thought of mixing that with my passion for tea. So I racked my brain for a while and thought about how I could combine the two together to make the content still coherent and thoughtful, then one afternoon I had the idea of Tea & Art Pairings came to mind, and that was my eureka moment. I took the idea to my husband and friends to see if it sounded as good to them as it did to me and they all loved the idea, telling me I had nothing to lose in pursuing this and so much to gain and they were right. Knowing it sounded like a good idea to people outside of my brain made me even more confident in the idea. So from today onwards you can expect to see tea & art pairings pretty regularly both on my blog and my social platforms and you can expect to see me talking more about art in general. I know that for some of you this might be too much of a change but, I hope you’ll stick with me despite that.
