This painting, which will be part of the Visible Audio Landscapes exhibit at @artsoundlanguage, is my interpretation of a track called Asset/Defect by @tristanxwelch. I first heard Tristan’s music when I saw a live performance of him playing at a record store, posted to Instagram, a while back. I reached out to see if he’d be interested in collaborating, and thankfully he agreed to it. We explored the concept of chromesthesia, or the ability to visualize sounds, particularly music, as shapes, colors, etc., and ended up putting out a little CD and accompanying booklet, and performing together at a winery, where my paintings, many of which were part of the collaboration, were on exhibit. We also contributed some work to an art and literary journal, as well. It was a very productive time and Tristan was so incredibly easy and inspiring to work with. Some of the tools I used to paint were traditional paint brushes, small foam paint rollers, foam pads on a stick, both thick and watered-down acrylic paints, a squeegee, a round pencil sharpener, a toothbrush, a palette knife, pieces of packing foam and cardboard, and (my) fingers to scratch lines with what little-to-no nails I’ve actually got, as well as my finger and thumb prints. I listened to the track a few times before working on the canvas, then played it a couple more times while painting. The idea to use finger and thumb prints came from seeing some of Jim Dine’s work - particularly his Four Hearts print. Their placement throughout this, and the other paintings in this series add an element of interest that I find aesthetically pleasing, and can symbolize being in touch and in sync with the sounds at hand. I couldn’t think of a better way to begin the month of October than with a spectacular outdoor concert performance by @requiemdrone at @rhizome_dc . It was a beautiful Autumn night, and hearing @tristanwelchmusic and @dubchampion, along with stunning visuals by @monicastroikart made for a magical evening. I was also lucky to see Christopher Tignor play afterwards, a musician whose work I only recently learned of, just before this show was announced. Unfortunately, after a busy week, sleepiness kicked in and I missed Hotel Neon, who were the final act. Hopefully next time I’ll catch ‘em when they come back. I finally got around to framing these five pieces, all acrylic paintings on paper, each one measuring in at 9” x 12”. They’re part of what I call the Ascending Series, made specifically for the latest issue of @symposeummag , whose current theme is “recovery”. The first painting was a return to collaborating with @tristanwelchmusic, who wrote and recorded a track for which I interpreted in color and composition. Tristan, in turn, made two more tracks, for a total of three altogether, to continue along the theme of recovery, also featured in the latest issue of Symposeum. Big congrats to @tristanwelchmusic on his latest album “Temporary Preservation”. Tristan continues to further hone in on what has become his signature style of bittersweet ambient guitar compositions on an album that he describes as “punk rock” in spirit, addressing societal ills and personal woes without saying a single word. That said, there is a genuine sense of beauty to be found throughout the entirety of the album’s nine songs, some of them more minimal and spacious, and others sounding almost epic and expansive. There is also a guest appearance by @secretwilderness on one of the tracks, while the album was produced by @billypizarro making this an extra special recording that sounds absolutely fantastic. Finally, the cover art by Eric Ruin is the icing on the cake and can be seen in the beautifully animated video for the track “I Live in Filth”. My friend @tristanwelchmusic has a new release comprising two long-form experimental compositions called Capitalist Teeth. On this release, Tristan puts aside the guitar, and explores more suspenseful electronic soundscape terrains. This is a somewhat new musical direction for the artist, with moments of tension and release and tiny sonic intricacies. Capitalist Teeth might be filed under labels like “power electronics”, Musique Concrete, or industrial noise even, but not in the harsh, loud, nearly chaotic sense that you might get from Merzbow or Wolf Eyes. In fact, the two tracks on this ep are quite beautiful, though not in a pretty sense, but in a strangely sublime, and dare I say blissful sort of way. Is it a coincidence that both of these CDs were sitting right next to each other, as pictured, when some striking similarities jumped out at me today? On the left is Jynx’s Garden, a collection of lively, ultra-vivid instrumental (mostly keyboard-based) electronic music compiling early works from @mrsjynxmusic. The artwork, by @dr.knudson has a hand drawn, marker-colored, cartoonish feel about it. On the right is the latest release from @tristanwelchmusic, a collection of multilayered, saturated guitar tones and textures using various effects pedals. It is also a collaboration between Tristan and I that involved a symbiosis of music and visual art, the art in this case being abstract acrylic paintings on canvas. While the music from both releases differ in many ways, they share an affinity for emotive, instrumental soundscapes composed and recorded with the utilization of electronic devices. With the Mrs. Jynx album, the visual artist was trying to portray what he heard while listening to her music, using an array of colors to reflect the emotional content of the tracks on this release. The angle and direction of the lines seem to suggest the movement and travel of sound, reaching out to listeners. With Tristan’s album, the outside cover art, featured in this post, was particularly painted to reflect the ninth and final track on the album, Chromesthesia 16, which I interpreted as a sprawling wide-screen track full of color, light and hope, even. I photographed it at an angle that would suggest the music extending itself to the listener, which, again, had similar qualities to the Mrs. Jynx album art, which I had not seen prior to working on the painting or album cover for Tristan’s music. This all seems trivial, but also continues to stir my interest in chromesthesia and the parallels between music and art. On that note, I believe there are only a couple of copies left of Mrs. Jynx’s “Jynx’s Garden” CD, available to buy at Brian Grainger’s Recycled Plastics online store. While Tristan is taking preorders, the Chromesthesia Chronicles CD is officially released Friday. A big thanks goes out to all who’ve supported this release, btw!

One-hundred Tone Poems completed over the course of several months. The original intent of this project was to create only twenty, to include with the first twenty copies sold of the Chromesthesia Chronicles CD - a creative collaboration between ambient guitarist Tristan Welch (@tristanwelchmusic) and I, completed in 2019. Due to COVID-19, the CD production plant we were going to use closed down temporarily, delaying the release of the album. I decided to use the borrowed time to make more, with the goal in mind to paint 100, each one to be included with each CD, that would be released in a limited run of only 100. I actually made 102, since a couple were given away as gifts to a couple of friends. Anyhow, the only way to get one of these mini-paintings is by purchasing the Chromesthesia Chronicles CD from Tristan Welch, which also includes a booklet of photos of the artwork that Tristan responded to with his music, or that I painted in response to Tristan’s music. The music itself is both intimate and expansive, true audio art that transcends words. PRE-ORDER - CHROMESTHESIA CHRONICLES My collaboration with @sloya72 is now available (with a streaming premiere through the Italian music blog Music Wont Save You) With this project we would trade experiences based on the theme of Chromesthesia (definition below) - some songs began with a painting of his in which I would turn it into sound OR he would turn my sound into color. This is a collection of the process in a jewel case CD with an artbook of the paintings - each CD also comes with a original 'Tone Poem' by Steve Loya. This CD is available through Bandcamp and otherwise will not be available through any streaming services (Spotify, Pandora etc...) Chromesthesia or sound-to-color synesthesia is a type of synesthesia in which sound involuntarily evokes an experience of color, shape, and movement. Individuals with sound-color synesthesia are consciously aware of their synesthetic color associations/perceptions in daily life. Synesthetes that perceive color while listening to music, experience the colors in addition to the normal auditory sensations. The synesthetic color experience supplements, but does not obscure real, modality-specific perceptions. As with other forms of synesthesia, individuals with sound-color synesthesia perceive it spontaneously, without effort, and as their normal realm of experience. Chromesthesia can be induced by different auditory experiences, such as music, phonemes, speech, and/or everyday sounds

The DMV area music scene is very lucky to call @tristanwelchmusic as one of their own, as the local ambient guitarist has been very busy and prolific in recent months, working on and producing a good deal of new material, both as a solo and collaborative artist. In addition to a couple of new full length albums in the works, there is the recent steady stream of deep, atmospheric drone meditations recorded and released with local music hero @dubchampion under the alias @requiemdrone, as well as contributions to a handful of new and upcoming compilations. And now we have a stunningly good new two-song ep called Asset/Defect from Tristan. The first track, which is the title track slowly unfolds like a sunlit cumulonimbus cloud, expanding and growing as it gently crawls across an evening summer sky, until it eventually, calmly passes and fades into the distant horizon. It’s a track one can easily lose oneself in, and has a quality that I can only describe as mentally cleansing, washing away the troubles of the world, if not for the near eleven-minute duration of the track. The second, slightly shorter track, called Dropping Guilt, has a bittersweet, yet optimistic feel to it, like an early morning sunrise and the dawning of a brand new day - there’s a subtle sense of hope amidst these troubled times, with each repeating and slightly evolving drone. The sound quality on the CD is superb, and if you’re a collector, I strongly recommend you grab yourself a copy of this beautifully designed and very limited edition audio artifact before it’s gone. Of course there’s also the digital route available as well. In the meantime, stay tuned both here and at Tristan’s page, because while I am a big fan of his music, I’m also very fortunate to be a friend and collaborator, and we’ve got something good in store for folks in the very near future.
