Be of Good Cheer, We Will Not Desert You, is the name of the song I chose from my friend Tyler Garling, aka @lizardhandsmusic’s catalog, after he agreed to be a part of the Visible Audio Landscapes project with myself and @artsoundlanguage. I first met Tyler, when he first played live at ArtSpace Herndon not long before COVID hit. I simply remember seeing this guy making all kinds of weird and wonderful sounds from his guitar, to a backdrop of heavily distorted classic cartoons, and feeling like I was witnessing a strange and beautiful dream play out for all to see and hear. After his set, he came back to talk with us, and was so friendly and had such a great sense of humor. Since then, Tyler has continued to hone his craft, and his Lizard Hands project keeps getting better and better, which can be attributed to his strong work ethic and can-do attitude. He’s also a good friend as well, who has been there on numerous occasion, especially when times got tough. I’m a fan of the patient, slow build of this particular track, which reminds me of some of my favorite material from ambient guitar heroes, Labradford. There’s a good balance of darkness and light, and I hear a sense of desolation mixed with swells of hope, optimism, and joy throughout the song. The best music is an honest portrayal of life and the human experience, with all its blandness and weirdness, calmness and storminess, colors and emotions, wins and losses, and the somewhere in-betweens. The yin and the yang is where it’s at, and Tyler’s music gets that. Here’s the first of six larger paintings, in no particular order, that I made for the upcoming exhibit at @artsoundlanguage, for the track Atlantic Drift, by Carolyn (Zaldivar) Snow (@tangent_universes). I first saw Carolyn play a live set in September of 2022, for a free @modularonthemall event. It’s always refreshing to see women participating and thriving in pursuits and practices that can sometimes be saturated with guys, and while all the sets were very good that day, hers was my favorite. At the time I was trying to get back into making some art again, and I began by returning to the sketchbook - the most basic and simple place to start, and what I knew best. That day I attempted to sketch everyone who played, and later posted them here to Instagram. Carolyn really liked the drawing, so I mailed it to her, and she, in return sent me a beautiful little collage she had made. I’ve been into ambient and more downtempo forms of electronic music since my later years in college, and it’s no coincidence I started listening to it when I began student teaching, and things were getting hectic and stressful. It also reminds me of painting - the layers of sound working like layers of color and texture merging and overlapping to create new and interesting and even beautiful harmonic structures. Carolyn’s music is like this, and I was so happy when she agreed to be a part of this project, choosing her song Atlantic Drift for me to interpret. There is a sense of drifting out to a gentle sea in this track, as dapples of sunlight flicker along the surface of the ocean, and while this project is considered a series of abstract landscapes, I’d say this one could be called a seascape, as I tried to get an overall aquatic, oceanic feel throughout. Here’s a sneak peek of details from five acrylic paintings on canvas that I recently completed as part of a collaboration with local musicians and producers whose music I love, and who are also friends. I’ve got one more to go, as I’m waiting for a track from the musician, but the other five are based on actual songs that I was allowed to choose and interpret as “visual musical landscapes”. All of these will be part of an exhibit I’m doing this spring at an excellent record store/art space in the DMV, which I’ll get into more with future posts. In order from first to last, in this particular post are paintings inspired and influenced by songs from 1. Carolyn, aka @tangent_universes, 2. Dave, Chris and co as @iceouttunes, 3. Tyler, aka @lizardhandsmusic, 4. Jake as @secretwilderness, and 5. a track I composed with @krisloyaart, using her field recordings of cicadas, when Brood X visited northern Virginia a few years ago. Yesterday, I met up with artistic accomplices @emscottart and @kent_lewis_perezcano at the @roundhillartscenter to work on art, talk about things, and simply hang out for a few hours. I was able to get a bunch of paint splotches done for some upcoming @splotchmonsterisland workshops, while Eric added to his visual journal, and Kent began the process of categorizing his vast catalogue of photographic work. Yesterday, after taking the car in for a safety recall check, and everything being ok (thank goodness!), my friend @emscottart invited me out to the @roundhillartscenter where we spent the remainder of the afternoon and early evening, along with @briankirk5707, working on some art. I decided to get caught up on a collaborative visual journal that I’ve been working on with @speckx, over the past year or so, and it was just good to sit down with friends, have some great conversation, and make stuff. I really enjoy the freedom of working in a collaborative visual journal, and had fun gluing in torn, painted papers that my students used to protect the art classroom tables. I also used discarded scraps and tossed out kids’ drawings (they tossed out), beautiful handmade papers from a friend, and visually interesting junk mail. Drawing and coloring with crayons, colored pencils, and markers, almost felt like being a kid again, all done without thinking about it too much. It’s interesting to see what happens when creative play is top priority. We all had such a great time and decided that this needs to happen on a monthly basis from here on out. Yesterday, @drmodler invited me to help him install work at @marylandartplace, in Baltimore. Him and @speckx will be hosting an ongoing, interactive exhibit that will be a work-in-progress in and of itself, inviting visitors to contribute to the show in the form of collaborative drawing. Dave and Sam were kind enough to designate a space to my beloved @krisloyaart, in a portion of the gallery, as a way to honor her beautiful, creative spirit and legacy. It is a deeply touching gesture that gave me a bit of chills after I finished hanging some small selections of her art, with Dave’s work serving as a sort of anchor and backdrop, making it a collaboration in and of itself. These photos are just a small segment of the exhibit, which is starting to shape up nicely, and spans a very large amount of space. One-hundred Tone Poems completed over the course of several months. The original intent of this project was to create only twenty, to include with the first twenty copies sold of the Chromesthesia Chronicles CD - a creative collaboration between ambient guitarist Tristan Welch (@tristanwelchmusic) and I, completed in 2019. Due to COVID-19, the CD production plant we were going to use closed down temporarily, delaying the release of the album. I decided to use the borrowed time to make more, with the goal in mind to paint 100, each one to be included with each CD, that would be released in a limited run of only 100. I actually made 102, since a couple were given away as gifts to a couple of friends. Anyhow, the only way to get one of these mini-paintings is by purchasing the Chromesthesia Chronicles CD from Tristan Welch, which also includes a booklet of photos of the artwork that Tristan responded to with his music, or that I painted in response to Tristan’s music. The music itself is both intimate and expansive, true audio art that transcends words. As a part of the Create Art for Earth project, for Earth Day, launched by Judy Chicago, I’m posting the recently completed DMV4AU series of drawings I made in collaboration with musicians from DC, Maryland, and Virginia to bring some awareness to the bush fire situation in Australia and the diverse spectrum of animal species affected by what is predicted to be an ongoing environmental crisis. These musicians working in the ambient, electronic, experimental, instrumental realms graciously donated their time and music for this project, that is currently on temporary hiatus. The good news is the music has been completed and recorded and the artwork is finished. I am hoping to see this musical release happen in the very near future, with all proceeds going to benefit an organization who works to ensure the survival and well-being of Australian wildlife. DMV4AU: over the past couple of months I’ve collaborated with six musicians/bands from the greater DC area to make a music compilation to raise money for wildlife affected by the Australian bushfires. The tracks are coming in and the music is as strange, beautiful, and unique as the animals represented on the album. This will be a limited run CD release featuring eleven tracks and an accompanying booklet of new original artwork, all created specifically for the compilation.
