The strawberry poison dart frog (Oophaga pumilio), sometimes called the blue jeans poison frog (depending on color morph), is a gorgeous Central American species native to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The species is known to include roughly 15-30 widely varying color morphs observed in the wild. These tiny colorful frogs are diurnal (active during the daytime) and terrestrial. They produce their namesake toxin in the wild from the insects they eat. Poison dart frogs raised under human care generally do not produce toxins because they do not eat the same insect prey that they would in the wild. __________ The photograph used in this post shows a blue morph of the strawberry poison dart frog (Oophaga pumilio) observed in Panama. There are roughly 149 species of “glass frogs” (some within that group known as “leaf frogs”) within the Family Centrolenidae, and while that number is likely to change as more taxonomic research is done, these frogs are generally bright lime green, with abdominal skin that is either transparent or translucent, like glass, allowing the internal organs to be seen through the skin of the living frog. This translucency seems to aid the frogs in looking more like what they are perched on. Native to tropical rainforests in Central and South America, these frogs are usually small bodied and arboreal in habit, with forward-facing eyes. __________ The photograph used in this post shows a Santa Cecilia glass frog (Teratohyla midas) observed in French Guiana. My name is Kathy Raffel. Welcome to my “NANPA Instagram Takeover Week.” I am an amateur photographer and have played with a camera most of my life. Recently I have concentrated on wildlife and nature photography which complements my love of being in the wild and inspires me to learn about the plants and animals I see. I am a committed conservationist and hope my images spark an interest in protecting endangered animals and habitat. I love the fact that photography and post-processing provide endless opportunities for learning, improvement, and enjoyment as well as entry into a community of nature lovers and conservationists. I do not have my own Instagram account but if you want to see more of my work, come visit my Flickr Photostream https://www.flickr.com/photos/kkr_images. We were very lucky to find this stunning frog while out walking through the rainforest in Costa Rica looking for nocturnal animals to photograph. Thankfully, this particular Coronated Tree Frog was not at the top of a tree where they usually rest but rather on a branch at about eye level. It was very patient while we took our photos. You can see the "crown" on the frog's neck behind the eyes. #frog #treefrog #tropicalfrog #coronatedtreefrog #Costarica #NANPA #amphibian #macrophotography #nightphotography

Theloderma is a genus of frogs in the family Rhacophoridae. They are found in southern and eastern Asia and sometimes called bug-eyed frogs or warty tree frogs. One species, the Vietnamese mossy frog, or Tonkin bug-eyed frog, (Theloderma corticale) is a nocturnal, semi-aquatic frog that reaches 3" in length at maturity. This species has one of the most unique looks in the amphibian world. They are native to northern and central Vietnam, and likely Laos and southern China. It occurs in primary evergreen forest and is associated with steep, rocky cliffs. These frogs deposit eggs in water-filled rock cavities, where the tadpoles remain until metamorphosis. Habitat loss and degradation due to the effects of rapidly expanding agriculture is an ongoing threat to biodiversity throughout Southeast Asia. However, this frog’s occurrence in steep, rocky areas may offer some protection from habitat loss. The species has been successfully bred under human care. The Baron’s mantella (Mantella baroni) or painted mantella is a small diurnal frog species endemic to Madagascar. Frogs of the genus Mantella are known for outwardly resembling the poison dart frogs of Central and South America, the two groups having converged on similar (small) size, habits, toxins, and bright aposematic colors and patterns. Painted mantellas inhabit moist tropical and subtropical forests of mountains and lowlands of east-central Madagascar. In the wild, the insect species these frogs consume allow them to secrete toxins from their skin, much like the poison dart frogs they resemble. Under human care, these frogs eat different insect prey, and do not produce toxins. Painted mantellas are threatened by habitat loss in their native range. __________ The photograph used in this post shows a painted mantella (Mantella baroni). Wallace's flying frog (Rhacophorus nigropalmatus) is a species found in Southeast Asia, from the Malay Peninsula and on the large islands of Sumatra and Borneo. This “flying frog” glides with its unusually large webbed feet, and small extensions of skin on its sides between its limbs. Normally found high in trees, it can effectively glide to neighboring trees or bushes, or even parachute to the forest floor. Interestingly, there are around 380 known species of “flying frogs” in at least four genera. This adaptation of gliding flight has evolved independently several times among tree frogs in both the New World, and the Old World. Argued to be an instance of parallel evolution if not convergence, the ability of these frogs to potentially evade their predators by gliding is nonetheless fascinating. __________ The photograph used in this post shows a Wallace’s flying frog (Rhacophorus nigropalmatus) observed in the wild in Sarawak, a state of Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Happy Earth Day from USARK! Red-eyed tree frogs (Agalychnis callidryas) will usually sit motionless during the day with their legs tucked tight to their bodies. This allows them to blend very well and remain hidden on green foliage. However, once their eyes open and their orange feet and blue sides are exposed, they are quite easy to spot. This iconic arboreal frog is native to neotropical rainforests, ranging from northeastern Honduras through most of Central America, and into northern Colombia. The species is classified as "least concern" while images of these frogs are often used to promote interest in conservation, as it lives in many areas that are vulnerable to deforestation. The Amazon milk frog (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) is a relatively large tree frog (2.5" to 4") that can turn up almost anywhere in the rainforests of South America. During the day or in dry weather it retreats into the centers of bromeliad plants, between the folded leaves of other plants or in tree holes where some moisture remains. The common and scientific names for the species refer to a thick milky fluid these frogs excrete when stressed. This substance is sticky and irritating; it should be especially painful if you were to get it in your eye or an open wound. The Amazon milk frog is commonly maintained and bred under human care, and is listed as least concern on the IUCN Red List. __________ Learn more about USARK - United States Association of Reptile Keepers at www.USARK.org __________ The photograph used in this post shows an Amazon milk frog (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) perched on a branch. The green-and-black poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus) is a strikingly colored, marble-patterned native of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia. In 1932, the species was intentionally introduced in Hawai’i for mosquito control. In its native habitat, this tiny species is a highly toxic animal, but due to the change in their diet, poison dart frogs maintained under human care are not toxic. __________ The photograph used with this post was taken by John P. This is one of this stories which I think every person who takes photos has a million, a least. You guys already know I love to go out at night and shoot the night life, we'll that day I did, but with not much success. We where for a long moment walking silently in the jungle with @imark92 and we saw quite lot of things but I couldn't take pictures. And it's when my camera was back in the bag, on the way to the room, actually at not even 10 meters from the room that we literally almost step on her. She was on the path, quiet and at first we thought she might be hurt so we had a good look to make sure she was OK, and once we realized she was, we did take some pictures cause, well, we can say that she is very pretty! Hope you enjoy the photo as much as I enjoyed the moment I took it! The imitating poison frog (Ranitomeya imitator), or mimic poison frog is a species of poison dart frog native to a limited area of northern Peru. First formally described in 1989, the species has several naturally occurring color morphs to mimic other poison frog species. Frogs of this species, like others of Ranitomeya, stay under an inch in length at maturity. The imitating poison frog is a species in which both parents provide care for the young, which are reared in small pools of water in plants such as bromeliads. The imitating poison frog is established under human care. If you are interested in working with these tiny, colorful frogs, ensure that you support responsible keeping by seeking out captive bred animals. __________ The photograph used in this post shows an imitating poison frog (Ranitomeya imitator) observed in the wild. This iconic arboreal frog is native to neotropical rainforests, ranging from northeastern Honduras through most of Central America, and into northern Colombia. While this nocturnal frog is very brightly colored, it is not poisonous. This species utilizes its bright “flash” coloration in a behavioral startle response if a predator is detected, giving the frog time to escape. The conservation status of the wild population has been assessed as “least concern,” in part due to the frogs’ ability to continue utilizing habitat modified through human activity. These frogs are moderately popular pets, with easy care requirements allowing them to thrive and reproduce under human care. __________ The photograph used in this post shows A red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) observed in Costa Rica. Check out this stunning photo of a horned marsupial frog (Gastrotheca cornuta). This nocturnal and arboreal frog species is native to Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama. Sadly, the horned marsupial frog is endangered, with deforestation, human activity, and chytridiomycosis identified as its primary threats. Frogs of the genus Gastrotheca are broadly referred to as marsupial frogs. Interestingly, female frogs within this genus have a pouch on their lower back in which they brood eggs, giving inspiration for the "marsupial" part of their common name. __________ The photograph used in this post was taken by Brian Gratwicke, and was shared under a Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0) license. It was only fairly recently that scientists learned that a lot of amphibians, and several other land-dwelling vertebrate animals are biofluorescent. An organism is considered biofluorescent when it emits visible light (glows) under violet or ultraviolet light (or another source of electromagnetic radiation). This is distinguished by the glow ceasing nearly immediately when the source light stops, unlike phosphorescence, which would continue to glow for some time afterwards, as so many "glow in the dark" toys do. This is also distinct from bioluminescence, where an organism is able to naturally produce light from checmical reactions within its tissues, as fireflies do. In 2017, researchers accidentally discovered that the polka-dot tree frog (Boana punctata) of South America is biofluorescent. Within a few months, another frog in the same genus was observed as biofluorescent as well. By early 2020, research confirmed that fluorescence is realtively common among frogs and other amphibians. It is believed that this fluorescence could be utilized by amphibians to better see in the dark, or possibly to find and communicate with others of the same species. __________ Popular press article and related peer-reviewed scientific journal article: Pullano, N. There are roughly 149 species of “glass frogs” (some within that group known as “leaf frogs”) within the Family Centrolenidae, and while that number is likely to change as more taxonomic research is done, these frogs are generally bright lime green, with abdominal skin that is either transparent or translucent, “like glass,” allowing the internal organs to be seen through the skin of the living frog. This translucency seems to aid the frogs in looking more like what they are perched on. Native to tropical rainforests in Central and South America, these frogs are usually small bodied and arboreal in habit, with forward-facing eyes. __________ The photograph used in this post shows an emerald glass frog (Espadarana prosoblepon) observed in Colombia.
