Day 661, 27-4-24, 24,9 km walked from Moravče to Zagorje ob Sabi So much happens in a day! I woke up and went to metka’s house for breakfast, polenta and coffee (Turkish coffee heated in the pot). I walked up and down a lot! For lunch I saw this little church up a hill and thought I’ll stop there, then it started raining as I I pushed Arlette up the last bit of hill!!! 🥵💦😅 had my lunch, by the time I started walking again it had stopped raining! I stopped for some coffee at 16.00 and as I was studying the nap I saw hills mountains and big climbs so decided to do some cheating(!) And headed for the nearest station which turned out to be not so near! I stopped for a beer as it was getting dark, and got talking to two women, they got me a big salad! And invited me for the night! Day 660, 26-4-24, 16,2 km walked.from Ihan to Moravče I got going really late, but so grateful for having a dry tent! Some long uphill, and then some nonexistent paths and taking the plunge into the woods! But sooo worthwhile, such beauty!! A lot of flowers and bees, and finding myself in fields….. I nearly stopped to stay in a field like that ❤️ . Still cold but no rain, and snow only on the mountain tops in the distance In the end I came to this small town and saw a football field so I thought let’s try the same technique, but the local band had a concert there! So talking to a family, I asked if I could put up my tent after the concert and got invited to come and stay! I stayed with Tina, one of the daughters and will go round to have breakfast at mums in a bit! Day 659, 25-4-24, 20.9 km walked From Ljubliana to Ihan It rained all day!! So lots of stops for coffee or tea and then when I passed a football field I asked if I could put my tent up somewhere, they offered me a shower and WiFi and my tent under a roof! A 0.0 beer and tea! Day 657, 23-4-24, 12.1 km walked in rainy Ljubliana. I went to the city museum to see an exhibition about clothing 1900-1950 interesting And upstairs was an exhibition about the history of Ljubliana, very interesting too, a lot of different people passed here, the Romans, the Turks, the Habsburger etc I took quite a few pictures of faces, as I am drawing lots, just practicing colour use and observation. Still very cold, went back to the flat cooked some food and had another bath! Oh the luxury! Tomorrow I will start walking again! Day 655, 21-4-24, 20.8 km walked from that track near Sinja Gorica to Siska on the edge of Ljubliana. The sun shone but still it was cold, I walked along the road on the pavement/ bicycle path. And I was still very tired. I’ll take a few days to explore here and wait out the coldest days. The best thing that happened was that I ran into the French family on bikes that I saw yesterday, they are travelling from Malta to Stockholm on bikes! So cool! I’m staying with Asja here. Day 654, 20-4-24 (nice date), 26.1km walked. A looong day, a marvelous day! With the highlight being, running into a party of an accordion playing 80 year old father and granddad while on the phone to my best friend Rachel. She said you should do a podcast! Haha as it was I couldn’t record while being on the phone… Pity, but it was lovely to experience something like that together! I left the hotel quite early after a millet breakfast! Walked along the road, through some amazing landscape and towns. Learned about a tradition of fir trees on a high pole for special birthdays or weddings! Interesting, I wanted to walk at least half of the way and I managed more! Day 652, 18-4-24, 10.2 km walked, from Javornik to Strmec I got going late… so cold and after that hard work my body ached, I did not sleep well and had lots of dreams. I walked the wrong way, for some gorgeous views but when my gps told me to go up a mountain track I said no thank you!! And turned back (against my principles) with the help of some people that showed me where to go. And then after walking 10km Anka came by in her car, and like an Angel offered me a bed and food in her lovely part of heaven! I said yes! Day 651, 17-4-24, 15.3 km walked But one of the most difficult climbs of the whole walk! OMG sometimes I think why don’t I plan.. My GPS just took the shortest route and although it is beautiful It sometimes is just too tough! I walked along the road for the first bit until Col where I found coffee and some shopping, the lovely woman at the cafe offered me the coffee! After hearing of my endeavours After I continued climbing on a back road and then aaarch I had to take a path Full of stones, It was quite the work out! And at the end of it some very high steps! I was close to tears But with unpacking Arlette 3 times and carrying the stuff up separately I managed! I found a house with loud music coming out of it , so went there to ask if I could put my tent on the grass in front of it, 4 young men playing some great punk rock, all their own material, after putting up my tent I went over to listen. Great stuff. Lovely to meet you! It was very cold! I stayed in the field all day and felt silly because although the forecast was bad the weather was fine and te rain that was supposed to start at 11 kept moving up with an hour It only started at 3! Day 649, 15-4-24. 22.4 km walked from Skopo to Dolenje after which I asked some men whether I could camp there and they warned me about strong winds and rain and then gave me a lift 4,5 km further towards the mountains near the 207 road near vipana. In a field now waiting for the rain. I got up early packed everything up and was walking by 8.30 such a beautiful walk ! I saw many butterflies and flowers even a deer 🦌, there seem to be less cafes as in Italy where even the smallest place had one, a lot of wine makers though but they were all closed, Monday? Or just not the season? I found a coffee in a very chic place in a Borgo like village called Štanjel Very pretty! And the views! Had some lunch on a bench where I’d left my Arlette ( what a joy that she’s fixed again!) Later I stopped by a river throwing flat stones and dipping my feet. Day 648, 14-4-24, 1,6 km walked in Skopo. I took a rest day but got gripped by a makers drive and created 4 works! Plus finished one I made earlier! I could easily rest some more and make more but This might be the last sunny day for a while, temperatures will drop again so I’m heading to Ljubliana. Day 647, 13-4-24, 20.7km walked from Triest to Skopo from Italië to Slovenia, That means 9 months in Italy! I started my day with a mean climb up! Up! Up! In the town up there I found a flea market but not a shop so I kept walking untill I found one in Repen, I had to wait for it to open, which it did in a farmers place where they serve their produce, Meats and wine, so I just had some water! I met some nice people. And then I walked on into Slovenia through the woods… so no sign when I arrived.. sad to leave but also excited So far it is very beautiful, wide brand new cycling paths and different architecture I’m staying with a colleague of Senne who is Slovenian and they bought this place for weekends and holidays With Helena and their daughter (2) I’ve decided to stay a day so I can rest my feet a bit longer! They will be leaving in the afternoon, so I can have an early night! Day 2 - Via Degli Dei ✔️ DONE Probably the most demanding physical feat I have ever undertaken. Starting at 9.45am, we walked until 8pm, yep 10hrs & 15 mins… of mostly going UP! The whole day was incredible; seeing the views & terrain change as we continued our walk through the Emilia Romagna countryside. It was JUST long, longer than any of our maps, plans or tracking was telling us…and in the end we just had to make before the light went! My last ounce of positive vibes was spent trying to reframe it as part of “the plan” to reach the top of Monzuno for sunset 🌅… the mountain named after Jupiter, the King of the Roman gods (the equivalent of Zeus), he was a BIG BOY, and it just so happened that our accommodation for the night was on the other side of this summit. And in doing so, it all got a bit emotional! 1. Getting our Via Degli Dei Passport stamped by our first accommodation - L’Isola Del Sasso, in Sasso Marconi 2. Some of the 30 Hectares of their vines which produce approx. 120,000/yr. 3. Definitely NOT cheating, but our host kindly gave us a lift back to the official path, which saved us 4km… something i got more and more grateful as the day got longer! 4. Starting Day 2 of the #viadeglidei 5. Utterly beautiful view of the luscious GREEN rolling hills, we had the Hercules soundtrack playing at this point #icangothedistance (little did we know the ACTUAL distance we still had to go at this point!) 6. I don’t know what this little flower is but at times they cover the verges along the path with their little sunny side up faces 🍳 7. The realities of trying to film a great montage of the whole trek… keep watching til the end 8. Reaching the top of Monte Adone… we kind of didn’t realise we were there til we were there! But gave us a great view back of where we had come from. 9. I bailed out of this risk, but Kat, the intrepid adventurer took her life in her hands with a sheer drop on one side and a big ol’hole on the other 10. Day 645, 11-4-24, 12.4 km walked around Trieste. Pascale’s house and Garden is on the Hill above Trieste with a magnificent view, Oscar helped me fix Arlette and I did some repairing of my shirt. The garden is such a labour of love, with a lot of fruit and veg, roses and other flowers. Rebuilding of walls just gorgeous, there’s big water catching spaces so the garden always has enough water. We moved a big stone and then after lunch I went to town. On the way Ea messaged me that a packet arrived, from where??? I hadn’t send anything… I turned out to be part of my diary I’d send from Morocco!!! Almost a year ago, It had got stuck at customs, I’m soooo happy that it has resurfaced ✍️✍️✍️❤️. Trieste is a long spaced out place. Walked around, saw a Roman gate that has been built into modern Trieste and then at night met up with Pascale and Oscar who treated me to a farewell Italy pizza! Day 644, 10-4-24, 12,6 km walked from Monfalcone to Sistiana where Pascale picked me up because she wouldn’t let me walk the road to her place, to dangerous. I’ll visit Trieste from here and then leave here Saturday morning towards Ljubljana ( bye bye flat lands) So I left late because of a little rain and not far to go mostly via the pavement next to the road, pretty views, coffee breaks ( with bird) and then left Arlette to go and put my feet in the Sea.. After Trieste I will say goodbye to the Sea until after I get back to Brussels. Day 642, 8-4-24, 16,5 km walked from Palmanova to Crauglio It was still early but I found the perfect spot so I stopped! Sometimes writing in the morning makes me forget about stuff, and yet, the things that make this walk so incredibly wonderful are the people. The cafe I walk into where somebody will ask me what I’m doing and offer me my coffee! And yesterday the woman in her garden with her grandson that calls me over, I tell her my story and that everywhere I meet good people, upon which she says none of the people want war, we are all just people doing our thing. And than yesterday I met a man who found 2 four leaved clovers, he gave one to me! Wishing each other it would bring good fortune. Of course I don’t take pictures of the moments and people but they are truly the best. Palmanova was an interesting place too and it was a market day! I explored a little and left at 12.30 It has 9 points and 3 major gates where only one car at the time can enter/ exit ( with an interior space between two gates) It was build as a utopian experiment a fort against the Austrian an Ottoman reigns. Day 641, 7-4-24, 27,6 km walked from present to Palmanova most of the day through fields but then the last 11 km or so I wanted to get to Palmanova so I walked along the road, luckily not too busy. Only when I had to cross the motorway it was a little narrow. I found this place on Atlas obscura and it looked very interesting and not too much out of my way, I arrived and found an hotel and intended to go out and explore but after my well deserved and needed shower I really did not want to go out again! So I will pack and leave my cart downstairs and have a look around! Day 640, 6-4-24, 19,2 km walked from Giussago to Precenicco I asked around for a B&B but then I found this nice spot so I allowed myself an early stop. The days are very alone, I don’t meet many people. I’m glad I have my phone! Talked to my Son who just started a new job, so proud of him! My lovely Vincent And my daughter of course. I walked through agricultural landscape most of the day, fields are being prepared (sadly not organic farming) Some vineyards. The sun was shining all day very enjoyable! ( and my solarpanel works very well!) I came across lots of donkeys being moved to the mountains (don’t know which ones, so flat here) I saw water rats (or what are these called?) they live in the water next to the fields. I treated myself to gelato (saying goodbye to Italy) from a shop run by a pretty South American woman (Dominican Republic). Day 638, 4-4-24, 22.4 km walked from San Doná di Piave to San Stino di Livenzo I had coffee in the park where I stayed and then walked through town when Patricia cycled past, I’d seen her playing pétanque in the garden the day before and she was very friendly, she offered me another coffee! Yay! Nothing really happened just walking just enjoying it, sunshine, talking to some friends. And then finding a place to camp in the dark! Beside the water in very high grass! Oh and going shopping at Aldi instead of a Lidl because Lidl supports Israel and I don’t want to support Israel, more than 40.000 dead and already selling the land to settlers. they did their bombing with the help of AI, I mean really? We have to fight climate change and stop killing each other! Day 637, 3-4-24, 25 km walked from Altino to San Doná di Piave I started by visiting the archeological museum I slept next to, an area that has had people living since prehistoric times, and the Celts and Romans of course. Interesting but after Pompei and Peastum a little bleak. After lunch at a cafe I walked mostly along a lagune, very beautiful! I’ve never seen so many swans in my life!!! there were at least 50! And Flamingoes, ibis, ducks and more water birds. I should have stopped at the end of that track, but I hadn’t walked as much as I wanted… I ended up walking a lot more… because I hit a town and then another and ended up in A big Park! (And the birds shat on my tent!) Stopped for some tea and found the park at around 21.00 Before that I crossed a smiling Nigerian man on a bike who turned back to ask me a million questions. I don’t agree, he said with you walking alone, leaving your husband behind! Hahaha as if he had any say on the matter! It made me Laugh out loud! Late start this morning! I filled my bottles and left Valentina’s house by 8.30 and walked It was good to have a bit of a rest my feet had some time to recuperate although not quite enough.. Day 635,1-4-24, 12.3 km walked. So Valentina and I braved the rain and went back to Venetia. So Much Rain! But at least less tourists! And also she took me to the less frequented places, we visited 3 churches and she showed me the hospital, a lot of marble and lions! (it has an ambulance on the water!) Then we met an angry old Venetian man, who was complaining about the tourists taking over and them knowing nothing about Venetia!! He then showed us some secret gems that even Valentina had never seen. To get loose from him took a while though! Day 634, 31-3-24, 6,7 km walked mainly in Modena! ( happy 16,1 on average per day in March) We lost an hour in the morning so it all felt very early to go to Modena (Claudia Valentina and I left at 8.15!) 2 hours drive to go to a festival del humanite; workshops about the vagus nervous, and many others, which I couldn’t do because of the language, but many stands with very interesting people: numerology, massage! Vegan cheese, precious stones and other esoteric stuff. In a sports hall! In the Netherlands in the meantime all my family gathered I waved to a lot of them on the phone! Thank you Vincent. I got a massage yay! (Really I would like to see an osteopath!) After we visited Modena and it’s Duomo and had some icecream! The weather was so lovely that many km south! Day 633, 30-3-24, 22,7 km walked to Venice and some more. Happy Easter! We walked to fixing where there was a ferry to take us across to Venice, it didn’t rain. It was a lovely day, with a lot of water in Venice. The light was so beautiful I lit a candle for my aunt Marita, she has left this earth earlier this week. A very lovely woman… 🕯️ So many tourists, seeing all those big names in fashion taking over town. Sad Glass, Fashion, restaurants, (run by Chinese)…. I don’t envy people living there… it’s like a big amusement park. I did meet a lovely woman that maybe can offer me time on a sewing machine, to be organised. 🥰🪡🧵 Valentina insisted on paying for food coffee and bus and boat! ❤️ She doesn’t speak English so I did a lot of talking in my pigeon Italian At night we went to friends that had just come back from Nepal, I was very tired! Lovely people too, nice food. Plus Colombo Di Pasqua (special Easter cake, and we found a vegan variety). In bed late and when I woke at 6.15 it was already 7.15 and time to get ready to Modena!!! Day 632, 29-3-24, 17.1 km walked from Dolo to Spinea. When I woke up it was still foggy, and several people passed on the path, I left at 11. It was a pleasant walk, quite uneventful, apart from spotting geese and turtles! I had lunch in Mira, I went into a place and asked if they had anything vegan, to which they replied: oh no. Then I said salad or vegetables, pasta? She served me a big plate of grilled vegetables with polenta and bread! Perfect! Haha It’s so obvious really I arrived at Valentina’s house at around 19.00, she was still at work but her daughter and son welcomed me! Lovely young people! Macs making tracks in Tuscany! We followed the coastal trail in ‘Cinque Terre’ while in Tuscany on our hols. Supposedly 3.5km but the Apple Watch says otherwise and it was ALL steps and very slippery and uneven so that made it feel much longer and harder. Day 631, 28-3-24, 21,8 km walked from Padova to Dolo a lot of it along the river Brento. I too it easy in the morning while the cat explored the smells of my rucksack and Arlette some more… Then at one I took the plunge, but it still rained… so some shopping and coffee And it stopped!! Day 630, 27-3-24, 15,4 km walked in Padova/Padua I packed and left my cart at the hotel and went to the place with the sewing machine, I thought Zi had the address but I didn’t so that was a challenge! But I found it! Sadly Martinez hadn’t managed to bring her machine so we just had a great chat instead. After I wandered around and got very very wet! I had some food somewhere (cheap!) and then went to a vegan place ‘Veganda’ for amazing chocolate cake By that time O was dripping! Everything soaked! From 5 the sun came out again and I headed to the hotel to pick up Arlette and then to Yulia’s, so glad to be able to stay here.! We talked and ate. ❤️ Today it is raining again so I’m going to leave late so I arrive near Venice tomorrow night. Day 628, 25-3-24, 7 km walked in Padova, I woke up and hung out in my tent in the daisy’s in the sunshine, I scoured the internet for a cheap place to stay, then walked to town and scoured some more, I ended up booking a hotel for 2 nights. And scrolled on my phone all night, I am feeling so powerless to what is happening in Palestine, I just can’t understand that a people that was treated so bad is doing something so bad to another people. I thought when they said never again it meant never again. Starving and bombing people.. I’ve tried to keep my socials politics free but it is all connected. I’m walking because I don’t want to fly anymore. Day 627, 24-3-24, 20,5 km walked from that vineyard near Conselve to Padova ( in a park) I left early, was walking by 7.45! I’m sooo glad the days are getting longer!) I walked to the road and from there it was one small place next to the other with a footpath all the way. I took it easy Lots of stops for coffee and tea ( strange phenomenon, a lot of these coffee places have been taken over by Chinese people, just like in Spain. They leave everything the same, serve the same stuff and people, it must to be so lonely) I treated myself to lunch for Palm Sunday at an Italian run place, a plate full of grilled veg with lovely olive oil yummm a short spell of rain and wind.. When I came into Padua I was looking for spark I came across a squatted place, I went in to see if I could camp there but due to liability I couldn’t, I understand. But I met some lovely women and there was Iftar so I enjoyed that! It made me think of Morocco last year! Day 626, 23-3-24, 26.6 km walked from just past Roviga to just past Conselve. It was as an odd day emotionally went from sad to very happy via guilt and worry ( what will I do to pay the rent after I get back?, I Know something will sort it self out but sometimes I slip into worry, I’m not a good artist, nor a good clown… Slippery slope But the weather was beautiful warm and sunny! I got given coffee and apples and met a lot of smiles and lovely people! I arrived at Conselve around 18.00, I went to the supermarket and walked into a church, palm sunday celebrations! (The day before!). And then went to set up my tent in the park… I t was going to close soon so I kept going, then of course it took a while. I found a spot between the grapes and was gone before 8 this morning didn’t want to meet angry farmers.. Day 625, 22-3-24, 22 km walked from beside that bicycle path to past Roviga next to a river (Adige) and a train bridge. At 13.30 found myself a coffee place and spend a while with my brothers and sisters, to remember our mum, that was wonderful. Roviga was pretty and had a lovely atmosphere, some towers and great gelato! And an alcohol free beer! At the gelato shop I met a lovely lady who offered me my icecream before I even told her my story! Thank you Yulia! The spring has truly arrived now! Day 624, 21-3-24, 25,4 km walked forum Ferrara along the Po to Polesella First I visited the pinacoteca Nationale in the Palazzo dei diamanti with a lot of art from churches from 1400-1600 And then I set out walking along the river Po for most of the day, it was like walking in the Netherlands! On a dyke, very flat country side a lot of flowers! I should have stopped before crossing the river because The river crossing was a bridge with little space so I walked next to the barrier as soon as I found a spot to go through, on the other side the pavement ended and no way to get onvthe other side of the barrier!! So like a a strong woman I lifted Arlette over! Wow! Impressed with myself! Nothing can stop me!! I had to walk a little more but then found a nice spot, there was some thunder and lightning…far away. Today it is a year that my mum left us, miss her! I walked via the centre and ran into Guido and Paolo, lovely young people we chatted for a while and then walked to a park where we chatted some more. Even did some juggling!
