My latest fibre artwork is finished! This time I've started a series of smaller works titled ‘Sheep on a Thousand Hills’. I finally realised why I love capturing our New Zealand countryside (and animals and birds) so much. First off, I love my homeland. Secondly, I live in New Zealand’s largest city – Auckland – but every time I can get out of Auckland, and see the rural countryside, my soul breathes a little easier. The grass, the trees, the sheep – that’s my happy place and I could gaze on that view forever. To be able to capture an essence of that peace within one of my fibre works brings me joy. Ayako Miyawaki was a Japanese artist born in 1905 who lived in the city of Nagoya. In the early part of her life, Ayako Miyawaki worked as a kimono seamstress. Thanks to this work, she collected many precious textiles, including traditional Japanese garments as well as those from India, China and other countries. Miyawaki began producing her appliqué work in 1945, at the age of 40, after the end of the Second World War. She then decided to do something for herself. Applied work” was the first thing that came to mind. Her husband, Haru Miyawaki, was a painter inspired by Western portrait artists. Common inspirations can be found in both works. Completely self-taught, Ayako Miyawaki modeled her own creations on objects she observed in nature and at home, using raw textiles such as cotton, dyed with indigo. She used textiles to recreate the things that surrounded her in her daily life. In doing so, she established an original way of making applied art that was revolutionary at the time. She used Japanese patterns from worn-out fabrics, dyed them in bright colors and cut them boldly, without pattern. Getting ready for my show @studioplacearts starting in late June. These pieces use the ikat wrapped yarns in Morse Code then naturally dyed. Each piece represents a different woman who broke code in WWII. They all have super inspiring stories. Working away on #portrait Sarah Sophia Banks. Playing with the idea of this amazing collector travelling to Australia instead or with her brother Joseph Banks. These ericafolia banksia were named by Carl Linnaeus jnr for their heath-like leaves. Four banksias were collected by J Banks sailing on the Endeavour. I use the living collection at the Australian National Botanic Gardens as my models. Some amazing varieties are growing in a specific banksia garden - still relatively new garden. We took down The wooden wall in front of the gazebo a few years back and haven't done anything to it since then. I was tired of looking at it and wanted a finish added to the wall to help with insulation and add interest. I had considered Board & Baton but instead, we clad it with local lumber off cuttings. I like the character, Richard says it makes a good bat house (if they return to the area) and might also attract bees, we put up a paper bag to scare off wasps. We also removed the heavy garden door as it was falling off. Dado que mi obra este año lamentablemente no fue aceptada en el Salón de Arte textil del Museo José Hernández, ya soy libre de mostrarla por aquí. La llamé Re-construcción. Nació desde otra obra que no me dejó conforme y que era radicalmente distinta. Más allá de no haber pasado el corte, estoy muy satisfecha con ella, el trabajo fue mucho, también muchas las técnicas aplicadas, y el pensamiento central que le dió basamento: el momento tan lamentable que estamos pasando como país y la esperanza en la reconstrucción, en recapitular, rearmar y reformular los restos que queden para hacer con ellos algo mejor.

Something that happened while I was on social media break was a detail of a piece I am working on was featured in UPPERCASE magazine #60 in January! A sweet little naturally dyed silk organza patchwork. I finally purchased a copy and read it while at my favorite beach park the other day. I saw three sea turtles, lots of surfers, and a somersaulting swimmer. April Explorations--Art Residency 2024, @fiona.duthie Studio Spending time in the studio this month has allowed me to try out a few things that had been waiting on the side lines for a long time. No big felted project--contrary to plans-- but a few interesting developments. Last year I took Claire Benn's excellent class, "Out of this Earth" @fibreartstaketwo. Since then, my intention has been to try and felt with some of the fabrics I painted with earth pigments. I worried that the pigments might wash off when rubbed during the felting process. I'm happy to report that they behaved wonderfully and the colours hardly bled at all. I'm very pleased about that.
