What started as a faint wisp over Shuksan to the east soon spread to the South and East. Over the next 3 hours, from around 11:30 until 3:30, the CME continued to put on an absolute display of colors dancing around. While I was hopeful to see some green pillars (the most common) to the North and Northeast, I (and the 2 other groups that hiked up) was treated to a blast of colors and activity in all directions, and directly overhead. I felt like the auroral corona was originating directly overhead, and I was able to watch the energy, and the changing colors of pinks, greens, blues, purples, and whites, slowly move down towards the horizon. I switched from my standard 24-105mm lens in favor of a wider 12-24mm, which as widest rectilinear lens availabe, has never had an issue capturing the breadth of a scene. On this night, I wished I had something even wider to capture the full magnitude of the display. For scale, if you zoom in, you can see one of the other groups that hiked in, and are presumably stading on 10+ ft of snow above the summer parking area. Got to run the Sun Mountain (almost) 50k over in beautiful Winthrop this past weekend. We experienced everything from sunshine and spring blooms, to areas impacted by recent forest fire and a snow flurry up on the ridge after 4,000 feet of climbing. Even though I dropped out with only 5 miles to go - I couldn’t be more proud of this body of mine. Not only was it my first ultra post back surgery, but my training over the past month was almost nonexistent with my recovery from a bad sprained ankle. Next up - a little adventure across the pond before kicking off training for my 50k loop around Mount St Helens later this summer!

I have a memory from a weekend trip while studying abroad years ago where a friend said something like: "we've seen so many amazing things already, what's it going to take to impress us in the future?" I think about that randomly, often while being in awe of some new scene in front of me. Sometimes while seeing a familiar scene but in different weather or lighting conditions. In either case, I'm happy that there are so many things that still continue to amaze. The more I have seen, the more I want to see. The Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis had been on that list for a while. I had been thinking of the need to plan a trip to witness them recently. I had seen a few random photos of light pillars and colors from Washington State, but they were rarely as pronounced as those from Iceland, Alaska, or other more Northern location. Nonetheless, when I started hearing whispers of the favorable conditions in WA two Fridays ago, I spent more time than I should have trying to find an ideal spot, not only one with a photogenic foreground, but also one with views to the North & Northeast, where the chances for seeing them were the best. My first choices were lacking a clear N-NE view, so i eventually settled on a winter snow camping favorite. After the research, packing of tent, overnight, and camera gear, I got a later start than I had wanted. Slow Friday traffic slowed me further, but I was able to get to the parking area about an hour before last light; along with hundreds of others with a similar idea, who already had their tailgate tents set up and grills going. Fortunately, I still had a few miles of snow-shoeing to separate myself from the party vibe and light pollution of the crowd. I had just enough time to hike to the top (and the associated solitude) and get my tent set up before dark. With the photogenic nature of the sky soon after last light, I immediately started shooting. Soon after, I started seeing a faint wisp of white moving vertically above Shuksan. Over the next hour or so, it grew brighter, and greener, and then more wisps arrived. Then, a noticeable explosion of color appeared overhead, falling to the east, before encompassing the full sky.

While picking salmonberries the other day we struck up a conversation with a gentleman on a path less traveled. He asked what season we first discovered this trail in. Which I thought was a beautiful question. It recognizes that an area presents differently in the seasons. This might seem obvious but nonetheless, the majority of travelers only see places in one season. What a privilege it can be to watch a natural place in its full breadth. Meet Nic! Ever find yourself thankful for that poster reminding you about your favorite band or event coming to town? Nick and few like them take care of updating the city’s street advertising. Not only is it sometimes the least expensive form of advertising for local biz and events but it can also be a deterrent for tagging local businesses w/ graffiti. Business owners have to pay fines if tags and graffiti aren’t cleaned soon enough. (Don’t tag local businesses 🫵🏼😐) sometimes the fines add up and they can’t pay them. While taking a few photos, a guy came up and started screaming at Nic! Accusing them of covering up his art that he’d finished less than thirty minutes prior to the posters going up. I’d been there for a while. I didn’t see art that I noticed. Nick was covering up last week’s posters. Nick mentioned they also do street art and maybe that’s why they handled this other “artist” losing his mind with total ease. Nick said, “it’s part of using this space on the street” it’s a back and forth between paying to advertise on these spaces and artist using them to create. Thanks for letting a few of us take photos for a while. Made it up to the summit of The Brothers on Sunday. Easily the steepest mountain I’ve climbed. It’s supposed to have one of the best views but all we got was clouds and dumping snow. As the sun began its descent, casting a golden hue across the sky, I arrived at Ruby Beach, the air rich with the scent of salt and pine. The path from the parking lot wound through a thicket of dense coastal forest, each step bringing me closer to the rhythmic crash of the waves. Emerging from the trees, the sight of the rugged coastline took my breath away. Massive sea stacks jutted out from the water like ancient sentinels, and the beach, strewn with bleached driftwood, seemed to glow under the waning light. I walked along the shore, the sand cool beneath my feet, stopping occasionally to marvel at tide pools brimming with sea life. The horizon was a tapestry of pastel yellow and blue, reflecting off the shimmering waves.
