Smith Rock State Park near Redmond, Oregon. Volcanic activity from around 30 million years ago, coupled with carving from the Crooked River, formed the gorge and towering rock formations seen at the park today. Never thought I’d see the northern lights for the first time at home, let alone like this. The first fully sunny, cloudless, warm day in months. A once in a lifetime size storm. A waxing crescent moon. It all lined up perfectly. Mission Peak’s 852 meters of prominence means there’s nothing blocking the views in any direction, and unsurprisingly a fire lookout once stood up here. Every direction I looked I could see places I’ve been and mountains I’ve visited. Coming down from my hike the next day, I ran into a guy who lived nearby. We talked about when the snow line was, which seemed to be a popular topic right now. When I mentioned I’d been up Mission Peak the day before, he gave me a second look and replied “You must be local then…not many people would go up it this time of year.” I’m not sure if the wanderlust has grown stronger in recent years, because I’m always on the hunt for new corners of the PNW. What an amazing night! I've never seen the aurora this intense before, let alone in Washington state! I opted for heading into eastern Washington to watch the aurora, and it was well worth the drive out there. . This geomagnetic storm was so strong, the aurora oval stretched far enough south to be seen in parts of South America. What caused this storm was a large CME due to a X5.4 magnitude solar flare from sunspot cluster NOAA region 3664. Charged particles from CMEs interact with Earth's magnetic fields, causing disturbances that impact the planet's magnetic field's strength and direction. The strength of the aurora depends on the magnitude of this impact to the magnetic field, hence why parameters including Bz (the z component of the sun's magnetic field), solar wind density (more particles means better odds for a good aurora display), and solar wind speed are important to monitor to gauge the intensity of the aurora. . The magical Northern Lights 💜💚💙 Can’t believe I got to see them from my balcony last night. ✨ Didn’t think I’d be able to see anything so I didn’t even try. 🤷🏽♀️ I was in bed when @krystle_clear83 messaged me and said to go outside and take pictures with my iPhone on night mode. I didn’t even know my iPhone HAD night mode 🙊 So I went out to my balcony in my pajamas and didn’t see anything, But when I took some pictures and saw a faint glow of light green streaks across the sky, I was over the moon 🤩 I wanted to shout at my neighbors walking below me blissfully unaware that there was a FREAKIN MIRACLE in the sky…. and tell them to LOOK UP!!! 🤣 Those first pictures were nothing compared to THIS, though, when I went outside again and could SEE the lights with my own eyeballs! 👀 It makes me soo happy to see friends and family in the PNW sharing their experience of witnessing the Aurora Borealis. What a day on Oregons tallest volcano. A perfect skin up, and a perfect ski down. Recent significant avalanche activity prevented a jaunt to the summit, but it’s all about expanding our relationship with nature and this day was a massive success in that regard.
The Mother's Day tradition of climbing Mount St Helens in a dress all started in 1987 with a woman named Kathy Phibbs A bit of a spitfire and a whole lot of inspiration, Kathy completed many 1st female accents in Peru and Boliva, she led 33 women to the top of Mount Rainier to acknowledge the centennial of the 1st female ascent, and she founded Women Climbers NW in 1983 Kathy died tragically, albeit in the mountains doing what she loved, in 1991 Today - Nearly everybody who climbs Mount St Helens on Mothers Day weekend embraces the tradition and wears a dress or a tutu! We've succumbed to the peer pressure and will be participating in the festivities this weekend along with the other 490 climbers who have secured permits! 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾 This one's for you, Mom! ⚘️❤️ (And for you, Becky Lambert) ⚘️❤️ ➡️ Will we see you there!?

There's nothing quite like that first bite 🍽️
Mission Peak is the prominent southern bookend of the Wenatchee Mountain range. It’s a short and straightforward trip up the north ridge in the summer and fall. But in winter and spring, the snow-covered east face provides an ascent of an entirely different flavor. The journey came in four parts - first, a regular trail leaving from the ski resort (no complaints about skipping a long forest slog). Then comes an ascent up a snow-covered boulder field where I was rewarded with the first good views of the day. The views disappeared in the third section, where it was a mild bushwhack through a steep pine forest that seemed to go on for much longer than it actually did. And then it was out of the woods into the alpine bowl below the summit ridge. Nothing but some pristine snowy slopes with the occasional basalt boulders starting to poke through. I had downloaded a couple GOX tracks of previous late winter/spring ascents. But I wanted to challenge myself to puzzle out my opinion of the best route, and only turn to the tracks at each decision point for either confirmation I was making a good choice or a warning I was totally clueless. My intuition and my eyes must be improving. But my anxiety about descending steep slopes?
