Matthew Villar Miranda (he/they/siya) is Curatorial Associate at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. In their former position as Visual Arts Curatorial Fellow at the Walker Art Center, they worked on exhibitions by Julie Mehretu, Pao Houa Her, Paul Chan, and Pacita Abad. They serve on the Board of Stakeholders Museums Moving Forward (MMF), a Ford and Mellon Foundation-funded initiative of an intergenerational, cross-institutional coalition of art museum professionals committed to advancing equity across the museum field. In 2021, they co-curated the Art for Justice Fund-supported exhibition Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration at the Arizona State University Art Museum (ASUAM). What are the tangible and immaterial threads that tie us to our ancestors, and how are these distilled throughout the diasporic community? Can reclaimed cultural practices transmute colonial legacies and empower shared narratives of joy, beauty, and pride? In her solo exhibition at re.riddle, entitled Warp/Weft, Filipina-Chinese-American artist Charlene Tan delves into the realm of cultural simulacra and the poetics of materiality. Developing her own visual language, the artist reinterprets traditional Filipino tribal weavings in her mosaic-like compositions. She intertwines indigenous signifiers and generational craftsmanship with contemporary digital processes, bridging the distance between herself and her ancestors. Tan’s raw materials include foods and vivid pigments evocative of The Philippines, where she spent her childhood and her formative years. Tapioca pearls are self-contained diasporic manifestations—stemming from the Brazilian cassava root, often misidentified as Asian in popular food culture. The artist’s use of tapioca pearls in her dense compositions results in a texture reminiscent of her grandmother’s hand-beaded embroidery—a commonly overlooked painstaking manual labor that often defines the immigrant experience. The patterns Tan creates are a synthesis of traditional motifs originating from two distinct regions, Manila (representing her mother) and Bicol (representing her father), with each possessing its own ethnic identity. This some new shiiiii … but still under construction 🚧 she’s kind of just hanging off the stretcher bars at this point, I’m gonna shred her up more, loosen her up so she sags a little, and her edges break the plane of the the frame. The work has been all about chaos vs. rigidity lately, quiet vs. loud, form vs. flow, hard vs. soft. Also not sure how I feel about this burnt coral color. It’s kinda so bad it’s good, which is a quality I actually really love, I’m always including elements of awkwardness into my paintings that make you go huh 🤔 and you have to question what you see and think. The Ojo de Dios or God’s eye is a ritual tool that was believed to protect those while they pray, a magical object, and an ancient cultural symbol evoking the weaving motif and its spiritual associations for the Huichol and Tepehuan Americans of western Mexico. The Huichol or Wixaritari call their God’s Eyes Tsikuri, which means “the power to see and understand things unknown”. The Sri Yantra, Shri Yantra, or Shri Chakra (Sanskrit: श्री यन्त्र, IAST: śrī yantra) is a form of mystical diagram (yantra) used in the Shri Vidya school of Hinduism. Comprising nine interlocking triangles, it embodies complex symbolism. Four upward triangles signify Shiva (male energy), while five downward triangles represent Shakti (female energy), encompassing the cosmic and human realms around a central point called the bindu. The Sri Yantra holds great significance in the Shri Vidya school, central to its worship. It symbolizes the union of masculine and feminine divine energies. The triangles, varying in size, form 43 smaller triangles in concentric levels, mirroring the cosmos. The power point (bindu) stands as the cosmic center, encompassed by concentric circles with lotus petal patterns denoting creation and life force. These elements, set within an earth square, depict a temple with doors to different regions of the universe. Hey 👋 I’m back. Gotta say, life without Instagram was blissful. It was interesting to notice how uncomfortable I was at first, I realized that I fill almost every moment in between other things with Instagram, and when I had nothing to scroll through in those moments, they were just empty and I really didn’t know what to do with myself. At first I practiced just sitting there, doing nothing and in those moments I started thinking about all these things I’ve been wanting to do that I just “never have the time for” like reading art reviews and listening to podcasts, oh and applying to the Bard MFA program that has been on my to do list since 2018 😅 And so I found a shit ton of time, and all the noise in my head quieted down a bunch too. And lo and behold, the moment I opened the app back up I instantly felt that familiar feeling of mind-numbing-information and my voices of dread, worry, jealousy, fear, hopelessness. Yuck. That all said, there are still many wonderful reasons I plan to still post here, but I will definitely be doing it much less and with a ton of boundaries. Anyway, hope you all had a wonderful holiday and got some much needed rest and digital detox. And this is the back of a painting that’s about to become the front. 🙌 ps. Pray for me!
