Here are some of the deeper thoughts behind one of my photographs titled, ‘Life & Death’. I could have spoken for quite a while about this one. I have had some deeply profound thoughts and insights come to mind over the past two years since I opened the shutter on it, and it has sparked some beautiful conversations with people at different times. One of those came yesterday as I led a client on a day of one to one tuition in Snowdonia and he drew his attention to this photograph as one of his favourites. I was led to talk about how incredible photography has been for me from a personal and spiritual development. The camera is such a wonderful tool, and it can be a real catalyst for growth and change in a person’s life, if they allow it to be. I have learnt so much about myself over the past six years, and I’m sure that I’ll continue to do so well into my future. #photography #artisttalk #artistsofinstagram #artiststalk #artistsofig
Join us on Sunday, 19th May, for an artist talk by our two artists in residency on the subject titled “Performance Art and Politics.” The talk will then be followed by the screening of a Brazilian film on “migration and loss.” Hanan Benammar is a French-Algerian artist currently living and working in Oslo. She pursued her education in France at Rueil-Malmaison school of fine-arts (BFA), Oslo National Academy of the Arts (MFA), the Dutch Art Institute (MFA), and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (post-master). Hanan Benammar’s practice is characterised by a conceptual exploration of geopolitical, societal, and environmental issues. She employs a variety of mediums, including sound, music and video, as well as recording and archiving strategies. Bianca Hisse is a Brazilian artist based in Oslo. Her practice traverses choreography, sculpture and installation, often addressing how societies are choreographed through borders and demarcations. She graduated from the Art Academy in Tromsø in 2019. Her works have been exhibited across Norway and internationally, including: Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Finland (2023), Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Germany (2023), Kunstnernes Hus, Norway (2020) MAR Museo, Argentina (2021). We are excited to announce a Q&A panel for emerging artists trying to navigate the art world. The talk will feature representatives from three major sectors of the art world: galleries, institutions, and artists. We are delighted to be joined by Josephine Bailey from Rosenfeld Gallery, Jessica Wan from Mimosa House, and Yage Guo who is an artist based in both Shanghai and London. By offering different perspectives, we hope to provide emerging artists with the resources and platform to ask questions about working as an artist in London after they finish their studies. About the panelists: Josephine May Bailey ( @procrastinarting_ ) is a Curator, Art Historian and Writer. Currently a Director at @galleryrosenfeld, Josephine specialises in care-centred approaches to curation and writing. Josephine holds degrees from Oxford University and Goldsmiths College, University of London. Jessica Wan ( @jesswan___ ) is a curator and writer who works to rethink access from the perspectives of transnationalism, migration and feminist thought. Her research focuses on radical pedagogies and artistic practices that reflect on ecology, diaspora and collective study. She has lectured and facilitated workshops at Chelsea College of Arts, Tate, Iniva and TrAIN. Jessica is currently an assistant curator at Mimosa House, an independent non-profit institution that support conversations between intergenerational women and queer artists through experimentation and collaboration. Yage Guo ( @yagefg ) completed her BA and MA from Slade and is currently based between London and Shanghai. With an ethereal style and unique brushwork, Yage paints portraits, flowers, and still life in an ethereal style that evokes fantasies, dreams, and hazy memories. Titled “The Unflinching Gaze: The Image, the Archive and the Aesthetics of Resistance”, the event will be held in concert with Muholi’s solo exhibition at the gallery, ‘ZANELE MUHOLI’, the visual activist’s first solo exhibition of photography and sculpture in Los Angeles. Mai, 17:30 Vortrag von Andrej Pirrwitz: Vom Spurenlegen und der Zeit (im Bild) – Fotografie mit der Grossbildkamera Andrej Pirrwitz ist Maler und Fotograf, arbeitet mit einer Linhoff 4x5 inch (10x13cm), einer Grossbildkamera des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dabei nutzt er die (minuten-)langen Öffnungszeiten, um die Zeit als Komponent in das Bild einfliessen zu lassen. Wie geschieht das, und was veranlasst ihn dazu? Die Suche nach den Orten beansprucht viel Zeit; so werden pro Jahr oft nicht mehr als 15 finale Fotos. Pirrwitz sucht die Szenen mit den Augen eines Malers. Neben der Fotografie malt er Bilder, die sich inhaltlich an fotografischen Themen orientieren, aber mit ihrem Freiheitsgrad eine Verdichtung des Gesamtwerkes bewirken. Fotografische Szenen verändert er, indem er Gegenstände entfernt, hinzufügt, oft auch auch Personen ins Bild bringt. Was mit der Fotografie am Aufnahmeort aufwendig inszeniert werden muss, kann bei der Malerei schlicht auf der Leinwand absolviert werden. Andrej Pirrwitz (*1963, Dresden) lebt und arbeitet in Strasbourg (F). Er studierte Physik in Odessa und beendete seiner wissenschaftliche Laufbahn 1992 mit einer Promotion zur Festkörperphysik an der Humboldt-Universität (Berlin). Seit 2001 arbeitet er ausschliesslich als freischaffender Fotograf. Heshaam Abdelmoaty Running after infinite ideas till realizing that time passes as a shooting star has been the hardest challenge for the artist Hisham Abdullah Abd El-Mo’ty. He was born in Al-Qalubiyah on the 9th of October, 1972. He graduated from the faculty of Specific Education, Benha University in 1995. He continued his postgraduate studies till he got a doctorate in the philosophy of art education from Helwan University in 2009. The film follows the woman, the protagonist, as she makes her way through an unfamiliar city. During the course of a day, she meets several people with their own sets of expectations and forms of communication. The film uses elements of holiday suspense or ‘sunshine noir’ genres to convey psychological drama, but rather than the protagonist succumbing to a situation of horror or dread, her encounters are acts of kindness and openness from strangers in a place away from home. These gestures appear unnerving, even to the woman, as there is an expectation of hostility and confrontation in this urban landscape. 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘹 1 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘚𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘒𝘪𝘴𝘴 is commissioned by aemi and Sirius Art Centre, Cobh, and supported by Kildare County Council. The exhibition at TBG+S presents a deconstructed version of the film for an installation setting. A terrific talk by Bob and Roberta Smith at Hereford College of Arts yesterday evening. I didn't realise what a great campaigner for the arts he is.
