Back in 2019 I did a painting titled "A Cool Morning In Early Spring." This is the acrylic color study of the composition in preparation for the "official" painting. I guess I'm inventing a new post category: "Too Long Ago Tuesday." 🤣😂 I did this drawing sort of "en plein air"... I was standing in front of this painting by Kees Van Dongen at the Museum of Fine Art, Houston ( @mfahouston ) while drawing it there on site back in February 2006. I was rather self conscious and tense since people would occasionally give me an aggravated look as they stepped around me, (because I wouldn't move away I guess) so it is rather sketchy. But, after all, it IS in a sketchbook, right? 😊👌 Van Dongen's painting is titled "The Corn Poppy" and was painted c. 1919. This is another demonstration painting I did years ago for one of my advanced students' workshop/classes. (12"×16", acrylic on canvas panel.) I have not (yet) revisited it to finish it, but I would like to one of these days. The water and some of the rocks were done with a palette knife instead of a brush, which was a technique I was especially trying to introduce them to and help them with in that workshop. [Remember my disclaimer from the previous post applies to this one too: I do not usually do seascapes and am not really competent in them.] But I think it is valuable and beneficial to stretch ourselves out of our comfort zone now and then. "Three Palm Isle" is a 9"×12" acrylic painting on canvas panel that I did as a workshop demonstration for my students about 12 years ago, so I guess it qualifies as a "Far Back Friday" post. 😁👌 I painted the entire painting with one brush: a number 8 filbert. The palm fronds are all done with a particular stab/bend/smush stroke with the filbert that I worked hard to perfect so I could teach it to the workshop students. I have not done many seascapes and I'm really bad at doing them but students sometimes requested a seascape so I had to come up with a few. Here's a "Way Back Wednesday" post for you. This is a quick sketch study I did after a painting by one of my favorite master artists: Isaac Levitan. One day I was watching a YouTube video on my TV that was a collection or compilation of Levitan's works. When this painting appeared on the screen it just blew me away! I immediately paused the video, grabbed my el cheapo sketchbook and some Micron archival ink pens and started sketching. The paper in this one is an off white so I had to use some 'charcoal white' to make the sun struck clouds in his painting look lighter on this paper. And some thin ink washes later helped darken other areas like the water and in some of the clouds where the pen hatching still let too much light of the paper through. Levitan did some absolutely amazing paintings in his short life (only about 39 years!) The YouTube channel I found it on is called "Learn From Masters" and they have a lot of nice videos, each dedicated to an individual artist's work. (I hope it is still available.) They don't post the titles of the paintings, they just show the pictures one after another with about a 5 to 10 second pause for each. So I had to google his works to find out this one is called "Before The Storm." Every now and then, one of my collectors sends me a picture of my artwork on the collector's wall in their home. I am always humbled and honored when others choose one of my paintings to enhance their home environment and to live with on a daily basis. These two recent 6x6" paintings were acquired by the same collector (a few months apart) and framed in matching custom floater frames. They have them hanging in their entryway. I think they look great in those frames!! They told me these two paintings have a special meaning for them because they have traveled to both of these areas on vacations in years past. I am extremely grateful to these new collectors and indeed to all my collectors. Here's an oldie I ran across today. It was painted as a demo painting for a workshop I was teaching on 12/12/12. (Ha-ha!) It is acrylic on canvas panel, 12" x 9" and I titled it "Haybarrels Adrift." The reason I looked this up in my old photo archives is because I was shredding old records of classes and workshops I taught and I happened to notice the 12/12/12 date on one of my forms which got me to wondering what I painted that day. The photo is rather poor quality - my apologies. The mountains are more of a blue violet instead of the red violet they look like here. (Probably due to the light source I shot this under back then.) There is also a bad glare on the sky and mountains in the photo, also due, no doubt, to the poor lighting conditions. My most recent 10 day effort. (Don't laugh! At least it is under the 2 weeks bar that I set for myself a while back! 🙄) Pen and ink in my little 6x6" kraftpaper sketchbook from @artful.painter Carl Olson. (Check out his YouTube videos of interviews with 'famous' artists: some of the best you'll ever see!) This is a simplified shape and value study of a reference photo I took in Taos, NM back in 2006 that I have always wanted to paint. Here's a pen and ink sketch in my 6"x6" kraft paper sketchbook that I started from life of our middle grandson as he was painting. (I snapped a couple reference pictures so I could finish the ink sketch since I can only work in very short sessions until headaches force me to stop.) The ink sketch was finished on the date shown on the sketchbook page. Then over the past few weeks I have been working in short sessions to add acrylic paint to the sketch. Here are the top 9 most liked posts of 2023. Almost all of these were posts of older work; (a few were MUCH OLDER work!) Only the 5"x7" charcoal drawing in the center was done in 2023. (Due to ongoing issues from the traumatic brain injury in December of 2022.) I will try to do better this year as I also try to heal, improve, and make progress in battling the lingering side-effects from the TBI. Though these 9 got the most likes, I must gratefully mention that the 6 little recent oil paintings that I have been able to do as part of my ongoing physical therapy efforts have actually gotten more likes in a much shorter time (in only a month or so) than these 9 works did in their first month. Here's a "Far Back Friday" post for you. For some weird reason, I don't seem to get enough of this composition. This is at least the 5th version I did of it back in May of 2022. This tonal acrylic attempt was done on a 9x12" piece of mat board that I had gessoed on both sides. Doctors and therapists have been telling me to try to draw and paint again to help heal my brain injury. I have worked 5 or 10 minutes at a time on this for 4 weeks or so. I think it is close to being finished, although now I see a few spots that still "bug" me. (After 9 months of not being able to paint, I'm obviously very rusty as you can see.) "January in Arizona" is a scene I saw on a trip back to my home state a few years ago. We're in the shade cast by one hill looking at another nearby hill lit up by the low angle of the sun. Man, it was hot that day! We spent the Friday of spring break on Hilton head island running through the waves. The seagulls were obsessed with the goldfish crackers the kids had. Once you drop one, you’ve invited the whole flock to join in. The sun was so high and it just beat down on us. Nolan would feed the birds and then run away. He was about 5 or 6 at the time and he was so long and thin. The doctors and physical therapists have recently been urging me to try to draw or paint again as part of my therapy to help my scrambled brain recover from the post concussion syndrome I have been struggling with for the past 5 months. How about a "Far-back-Friday" post? 😁 This one is titled "Sunrise from Shepherd Street Bridge." It is my original Grumbacher acrylic painting on Grumbacher's canvas textured paper, 18" × 22". [I'm not sure they even make this anymore?] The matted and framed size is 25" x 28". (It sold in my 2006 Solo Show at The Cloister Gallery, in downtown Houston. Over 24 years ago, back when I was still trying to learn how to paint with watercolors, this ridiculous looking little 12"x9" painting struggled into being. My dad liked and wanted it (he was always one of my biggest supporters) so I gave it to him. He had it mounted, matted and framed and it hung on his wall for over 20 years. It returned to me in 2020, after he died in late 2019. Now it hangs on our bedroom wall. In spite of how silly or childish it looks, it reminds me of my dad and his constant encouragement and support of my artistic growth. I'm very delighted to see the portrait of my lovely wife was accepted to the International Watermedia Exhibition, and Watercolor Art Society – Houston (WAS-H) presented me with a Merit Award for this painting "Reflection of Silence and Darkness".   My painting was selected from an original 358 entries which is to say, this was a highly competitive exhibition. Brenda Swenson @brenda_swenson, herself a renowned watercolor artist, was both the juror who selected the IWE participants and the judge who selected the award-winners. Brenda remarked about my painting, “The light of a modern-day cell phone is handled beautifully, and the painting is a double portrait." Since my head is still splitting and my neck, shoulders and back are in agonizing muscle spasms still, (limiting what I can do), I'll give you a "Throwback Thursday" post: ''Clouds Rolling In Over Navajo Country'', an 18"x24" watercolor that sold in my solo show at the Mohave County Museum in Arizona in June of 2001. (Framed size is 25" x 31".) [In A Private Collection, Oklahoma] I did at least two smaller color studies of this composition (also in watercolor) before I did this full size painting. Those both sold to other artists who really liked them and, unfortunately, I do not have any photos of them. In fact, this photo of this painting is not a very good one (apologies.) From the archive department, "Henry." This drawing was done over 12 years ago. (This young man graduated from high school 2 years ago!) He had found out I was an artist and told me, "I'm an artist too! I'll draw you a picture and you draw me a picture. Deal?" So I did. 😊 For the art material geeks (like me): I used CarbOthello "Stabilo" pastel pencils (The red color is No. 645; the white is No. 100) on Strathmore's "Velvet Gray" charcoal paper (as recommended by William L. Maughan @williammaughanart in his book on "Drawing the Head".) The paper IS all one color, by the way. I filmed this back in September 2022, just after I posted a short video of some very old sketches. At the end of that little clip I said, "Stay tuned, some sketchbook tours are coming," or something to that effect. Well, I'm still suffering from massive headaches, neck and shoulder aches and muscle spasms after getting sledgehammered on the head by a 20 to 30 pound curb of ice that fell off the roof of the Sheraton Hotel in Colorado in late December. 🤕 (The ER doc said I definitely suffered a big concussion, said I was "lucky to be alive!" I had to lie in bed in a dark room for most of our anniversary vacation! But I digress.) I was too embarrassed to post this back in September, but now with the splitting headaches, dizziness, pain from head to tailbone and deafeningly loud ringing in my ears, this little video somehow doesn't look as bad as it did back then. So this isn't technically a sketchbook tour -- yet. But it is the preparation leading up to some. (If I ever start feeling better enough to film them.) Please forgive my old man voice. Well, it's time for another "Far Back Friday" post. This painting from 2004 was purely from imagination, no reference material at all. [So it's an example of what can happen when I let my imagination run wild! 🤣] "Aspen Glow", watercolor, 22.5" x 23" on Arches 140 lb. 100% Cotton Rag paper. (It was a full sheet 22-1/2" x 30" but after much agonizing over what was bugging me, I cropped it for a better composition.) It sold at my solo show in December of 2004 in a gallery in downtown Houston. I delivered and hung it for the collector on January 7th 2005; almost exactly 18 years ago to the day!! A VERY early watercolor for my "Way back Wednesday" post: "Wine and Apples". This was my very first 'wet-in-wet', alla-prima watercolor. (1999) I set up the still life on the breakfast table, totally soaked the paper before beginning to paint and painted start to finish all in one go. The wet paper makes the brushed on colors 'bleed' out, often unexpectedly and uncontrollably. (As along left side of bottle.) You can attempt to herd the color a bit with a dry or slightly damp brush but it still pretty much goes where it wants to. I lifted out highlights on the background, bottle and apples with an almost dry brush too. Back in 2001 for my first solo show at the Mohave County Museum in Arizona, I had 10 ultra high quality giclee's printed of this painting. (An extremely limited edition!) I worked with the printer for something like 6 to 8 hours over a few days perfecting the print to match the original painting's colors. I took 5 with me to the museum show and all 5 sold! I still have 4 of the 10 left if anyone is interested. Feeling just ducky today so how about a peek at "Lake Mohave Mallards", Grumbacher acrylic on board, painted in 2016. (Part of a very nice private collection in Houston, Texas.) I spotted this pair on Lake Mohave on the Colorado River in Arizona years ago, in December actually. The angled afternoon sun cast dark shadows from the dock and boats into the water but these two had just paddled their way into this glorious bright patch of water lit up by the sun's rays. That iridescent head on the male was extremely challenging to try to translate into paint and I really did not do much more than half succeed. Paint just cannot do justice to the amazingly rich colors in Creation! (Very frustrating for an artist. Ha!) Though the original is sold, prints are available on Fine Art America (link in bio.) If you swipe you can see some screenshots I took off my computer monitor to give you a view of the way FAA shows you how a matted, framed print would look in real scale on a wall. {I chose an 11x14" print size to see how it would look.) A way, way WAY back Wednesday post. 🤣 This very early little watercolor was the 3rd painting in my series I called "The [Native American] Gourd Pot and the Lemon." A recent watercolor of a fall leaf which had fallen among the rugged rocks along the shore of Table Rock Lake on "Peninsula Lookout" near "Moonshine Beach." "Bridge Over Coon Creek" acrylic on 9"×12" canvas panel, frame O.D.: 13-1/2" x 16-1/2". Painted "en plein air" sitting beside this lake in Branson, Mo. The bridge runs parallel alongside the lake and it crosses Coon Creek where it empties into the lake. [Private Collection, Houston, Texas.] [Swipe for second picture --->] I was set up at the edge of the lake... the steep hillside and rocks were my "chair". I actually used my umbrella for the first -- and so far, last -- time on this occasion. 🤣 The sun and wind really dried the acrylic paints fast!
