This ain’t my mama’s Red Truck. Cline has been around for many moons, I would argue put on the map by their once insanely popular Red Truck. That Red Truck would drive into stores, park proudly into floor stacks, it was everywhere. For a number of years it was my parent’s table wine, so I’ve had my fair share of it. Learning that Cline is the parent company, I visited the winery while in Napa 18 years ago. It was this moment that I discovered that Cline had so much to offer besides Red Truck. Their old vine wines included new-to-me varietals such as Carignan and Mouvedre, single varietal versions, rare and impressive. We deserve more Vignoles in our world. Surprisingly easy to confuse with Viognier (I’ve done it), which is a vastly different varietal. Viognier is a more full bodied, fruit forward, ferociously floral, warmer climate varietal that is luscious and divine. The varietal characteristics of this grape can make it harder to pair with food, however, a fun and satisfying challenge. Viognier is strikingly different, the fruit present but more subdued, much more acidity and citrus, a greenery and mild tropical fruit spectrum tantalize the palate. A cooler climate varietal, excellent food pairing wine, I am grateful to live in the Finger Lakes and finally be introduced to this stunner. We opened a bottle of Vignoles from Keuka Lake Vineyards to pair with a spicy red curry, dry rubbed tilapia, and a spoonful of jasmine rice. The acidity cut the richness of the coconut milk, the fruit highlighting the curry and spice. Bobal, qu’est que c’est? How often have you seen Bobal on a wine by the glass list, or by the bottle list, or on a front wine label, or as a blending grape, or ever at all? This was my first interaction (that I know of) with Bobal, and I’m grateful for it. From Southern Spain, most specifically Utiel-Raquena (also not familiar), this varietal is most recently gracing the wine world as a solo varietal. The bright fruit and high acidity make this a food pairing dream, understandable why the varietal is now being showcased as the single star it is. For this beauty, we found bright red berries interlaced with floral notes and a mild earthiness. We paired it with a roasted skate, mushrooms and spinach, seasoned jasmine rice, and a green to the core sauce (celery, herbs, lime juice, you get the drift.) A tribute to a leader in the best of the best Cabernet from California. I was introduced to Pine Ridge almost 20 years ago with a beautiful bottle of Chardonnay, a gem of a find on wine list in Lake Placid, NY. Not a year later I visited their winery halfway through a cross country loop - so much enjoyed was Napa and Sonoma that I was forced to send clothing, books and such home to accommodate all of the wine purchases! Pine Ridge became a favorite instantly, so impressed I joined the wine club for a year or two. Pine Ridge introduced me to Tannat. To their incredible Chenin Blanc and Viognier blend. To an expanse of top notch wines in a fairly large portfolio. To find this 2005 Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon a week ago was a fluke. I knew I needed to drink it soon, so I leafed through recipe books to find something to pair alongside - Boeuf Bourginon was the ticket. With my own culinary flare, I created a lovely stew that did in fact work just fine. So here’s all about the wine: The nose was ripe with plum, currants, cassis, blueberry, nectarine skin, dark chocolate, and leather. The palate was entwined with rhubarb, dark cherry, rich chocolate, dark berry compote, an overall decent acidity and velvety tannins. A little Cabernet Franc from Touraine to brighten up the day! A bit more body and umph than the Cabernet Francs I’m used to - less acidity, rounded fruit, deeper and darker overall. Being much more used to the Finger Lakes versions than French, this discrepancy and therefore mediocre food pairing resulted. Variation in each region exists, amongst regions exists, amongst vintages exists - don’t hang your hat until you have written word. We enjoyed this wine with an herbaceously marinated chicken breast, an herbaceous and creamy potato salad, and lemony asparagus. Both the wine and the dinner, delish. Scanning the globe through wine, one bottle at a time. I found this stunner in a WBG list at a local favorite in the FLX, a 2015 Cabernet and Gaglioppo (a native varietal) from Calabria! Very familiar with the term “Super Tuscan”, I am now exposed to the term “Super Calabrian”. And so it is indeed. The deep dark fruits balanced with tinges of floral, greenery, the lovely strokes from the bit of age, very well balanced and the perfect pairing for our various pasta dishes. A special single vineyard Pinot - known more for their Chardonnay but producing excellent wines across the board. Also a great find of an older vintage. The red fruits complimented by tantalizing tannins, dark earth and, of course, that touch of age. Bravo to local FLX wineries for excellent hospitality and wine! It’s been a while since we visited any of our Finger Lakes spots so it was wonderful to re-embrace all that is to love about New York State vino. We tried for the first time wines from Belhurst Castle, admiring many, creating a hard choice when it came down to picking a bottle to purchase (or 4). Standouts included their Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Lemberger, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Next I revisited and introduced my partner to Ventosa - a very positive memory of mine from a previous tasting. Once again, the wines impressed. To taste wine is to truly travel the world. It is at its core a sense of place and time. Whether it’s Cabernet Franc from the Loire or Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, you get a feel for what the varietal has to say from that particular region in that particular moment. With all of my wine knowledge and experience, I can safely say that my familiarity with any of these wines is limited, if not a first. Hidden gems of wines that you rarely see or talk about, some more so than others. Mencia? Incredible! Tasting this bottle was like the first time I tasted a Blaufrankish - hauntingly new yet familiar. Mencia had such dark fruit reminiscent of Cabernet from Washington state and the blue fruits of Petit Verdot, yet different in its own beautiful way. Across, across, across the street from Chateauneuf du Pape - a Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre blend for the books. I’ll never forget having Gigondas and Vacqueras described as Chateauneuf but “across the street”, which is why it was approximately half the price. Same blend, similar style, merely located outside of the confines designated Chateauneuf. Now this wine is not Chateauneuf, or Gigondas, or Vacqueras, however, it is in the same vein. Yet lighter in body and expression. Red wine vinegar dejeuner. I started my red wine vinegar several weeks ago. I added it to a simple salad dressing with butter lettuce and cheese. I paired it with a broccolini & cheddar quiche. This is what self care looked like for me today. Fresh salad dressing, New Year’s resolution intact. Just add leftover red wine to any container with a cheese cloth over it and some raw apple cider vinegar. A few weeks later voila! I’m going to experiment with more leftover wines and “mothers”. Some day I’ll bottle it for friends who visit. Happy Friday. May you find your own delights this weekend.

A wine that dreams are made of - this bottle would take anyone out of retirement. Being familiar with their Barbera, I selected the Barbaresco as a treat to go with a simple pasta bake. While not the fancy meal this wine deserved, it was oblivion. Upon first whiff, I knew this was was going to be special. The soft red fruits peak out, on the palate immersed in acidity with gripping tannins, hints of floral and earth, a tinge of age that heightens the complexity - this wine is excellent to drink now but could certainly age 10+ years and still please/excite the palate.
