My Comfort Wine - Hamilton Russell Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 A frustrating Sat afternoon with a badly performed mock exam flight. The stress is building up. Went to one of my favorite wine bars in Taipei @graftwinetw and seeing one of my favourite South African wine is being sold by glass. A no-brainer choice, isn’t it? Since my visit to Hamilton Russel Vineyard in late 2022 and luckily hosted by @anthony_hamilton_russell , I complete fall in love with their wines. Such a visionary, knowledgeable and humble leader. I am so lucky to have tasted many back vintage in Hong Kong vertically as well to see their transformation. Back to this 2022 Chardonnay - it is a wine with precision. Subdued fruit with integrated vanilla aromas on nose. High crisp acidity with a creamy cheesy mid-palate and a linear persistant saline mineral finish. A wine that is crystal clear with lots of precision without compromising the complexity. Today's WSET Level 2 class was incredibly exciting, as we delved into the world of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, exploring how their flavors change depending on their region of production. We tasted seven different wines, and it was fascinating to compare and contrast the unique characteristics of each. We tasted Chablis, Pouilly-Fuissé and uniquely a Chardonnay from Italy made in a New World style. It's remarkable how these wines come from the same grape yet offer such diverse flavor profiles. Next, we moved on to Sauvignon Blanc, another versatile grape that takes on unique characteristics based on its terroir. We sampled Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, and Sauvignon Blanc from Australia which bursted with tropical fruit flavors and zesty acidity. It was a delightful journey through the varied world of white wines, highlighting how a grape's region can significantly impact its flavor. I was intrigued by the Italian Chard, full of complex flavors and quite enjoyed the Sancerre, surprisingly emanating tropical flavors which is not so typical to Sancerre. A travel through time, which was, which is, and which will be. If I wanted to sum up my visit to the Ca' del Bosco winery with Maurizio Zanella in one sentence, this would be the most effective. Maurizio Zanella is a visionary, and I am certainly not the first to think so (and not very original either), and their new winery is yet another confirmation of that. From the innovative techniques in the cellar (the "spa" of the berries is really impressive), to the ageing caveaux, from the barrels that go up and down in the elevator for racking (to avoid the use of pumps), to the "5 Senses Room" and the descent into "the bottle made from 38,000 bottles" (it is hard to explain, go visit it and you will understand). .... I was forgetting the Annamaria Clementi R.S. 1980. How can you not call visionary who, together with the expertise of André Dubois (chef de cave of Ca' del Bosco until 1990) and Stefano Capelli (Dubois' heir) bottled a Franciacorta in 1980 and waited until 2023 to present it, having it aged for more than 42 years, convinced in the great potential of the terroir of Franciacorta?
