The percent of women who reported engaging in at least occasional fat talk. In a study published in 2013, a sample of 881 women, aged 18-87 years, were asked to self-report about the frequency of their engagement in and exposure to fat talk and old talk. A whopping 33% reported frequently engaging in fat talk. The study authors wanted to know how much exposure to these topics correlated to thin-deal internalization, body areas dissatisfaction, self-objectification, aging appearing anxiety, drive for thinness, and ED pathology. Fat talk is diet culture in action. And most fitness brands will shamelessly use the negative impacts of fat talk to sell you their so-called solutions, usually via the messaging that whatever they’re selling will make you thinner. BIO/STORY Terri Lloyd is a self-taught artist living and working in Los Angeles. In the late 1980s she accidentally landed a computer graphics job and spent the next 25 years in commercial art. Volunteerism and community arts projects have been a prominent part of her activities. In 2010 she founded a non-profit feminist arts group for women over the age of 40. She authored two books, When I Grow Up And Other Mantras and The Little Red Book Of Commie Porn with artist Norman Conquest. Both are now out of print. The death of her father in late 2017 was the catalyst for a return to painting. During the pandemic lock-down of 2020, Terri saw the effects of trauma. BIO/STORY A. Laura Brody is a professional costume maker, artist, and the founder of Opulent Mobility; a series of group exhibits that ask artists to reimagine disability as opulent and powerful. The idea for these exhibits began when her former partner had a stroke. During his physical therapy, she met an 85-year-old man and a four-year-old girl doing stroke rehab. It was clear that disability could happen to anyone at any age for any reason. But why did the devices look so cold and clinical? She made her own fancy wheelchairs, learned from her mistakes, and invited others to re-imagine disability through the lens of art. Opulent Mobility started in 2013 as a small show at the Bell Arts Factory in Ventura and since then has grown to become an international exhibition. The exhibits have been featured in the Improvised Life, Shoutout LA, and on Frances Anderton’s radio program DnA. Where can we find you?
