My first article of 2024 focuses on Laozi's "diamond cutter" (jingang zhuo, 金鋼琢; a.k.a. "diamond snare," jingang tao, 金鋼套), an uber powerful holy treasure. The fillet first appears in chapter six when it is used as a blunt throwing weapon to incapacitate Sun Wukong during his rebellion. It later reappears in chapters 50 to 52 as a mysterious, shiny, white string of pearls used by a buffalo spirit to instantly suck away magic weapons and animals and defeat even destructive elemental attacks, kind of like a personal black hole generator with a built-in pocket dimension. It’s so powerful, in fact, that even the sight of it is enough to make Monkey and a host of other gods flee for their lives. Les éditions 2024 proposent en cette fin d'année un ouvrage merveilleux, véritable objet-livre, nommé La Pérégrination vers l'Ouest. Nombre d'entre vous doivent se demander en quoi cet ouvrage diffère et se démarque des autres éditions du même titre. Ce livre est tout simplement la version abrégée, illustrée et traduite du japonais de la célèbre épopée classique chinoise. . Cette édition japonaise voit le jour au XIXe siècle grâce au travail de libraires d'Osaka. L'idée : proposer une édition magnifiquement illustrée de ce grand classique. Pas moins de 250 gravures furent commandées et intégrées à cette édition. Grâce au talent des artistes de l'ère Edo, c'est toute la magie et la puissance de cette histoire qui prend vie devant nos yeux. Les éditions 2024 ont fait un travail titanesque pour retrouver et compiler toutes ces gravures dans cette présente édition. Ils se sont ensuite entourés de spécialistes et passionnés de cette œuvre et de l'art japonais, pour proposer un ouvrage des plus complets. C'est ainsi que Christophe Marquet, spécialiste de l'histoire de l'art japonais, explique dans sa préface comment le texte chinois est parvenu jusqu'au Japon et a été traduit et adapté en japonais. Vous l'aurez compris, cet ouvrage est une très belle édition qui permet de découvrir ou de re-découvrir ce grand classique chinois sous un autre jour. C'est aussi avant tout la preuve matérielle que La Pérégrination vers l'Ouest est un texte voyageur majeur qui a marqué de nombreux peuples et lecteurs !
