NOW OPEN: EMILY GORDON | ‘Higher Ground’ | Until 2 June | Michael Reid Southern Highlands
Today marks the much-anticipated launch of Michael Reid Northern Beaches signed artist EMILY GORDON's solo exhibition ‘Higher Ground’ at Michael Reid Southern Highlands.
Across 21 works on board, Gordon captures the historic streetscapes and jumbled urban topography surrounding her Sydney home. Foliage spills over lacy Victorian balconies and gelato-toned facades in a dynamic interplay of light, colour and pattern.
Her works dwell both in fine detail (the complex intersections of angular planes in a row of terrace houses) and vaguer gradations in form (a twilight sky and its broth of yellows and dark blues). At every moment, she appears to delight in testing her technical command.
Gordon has achieved significant success since she committed to being an artist six years ago, including selection as a finalist in the 2021 National Emerging Art Prize and selling out her past four shows at Michael Reid Northern Beaches and Michael Reid Southern Highlands.
“You are always growing. I have a process but not a fixed approach. For every painting, I ask, what does this painting need, what is special here and how can I bring that out visually,” she says. “Giving each work its own approach opens up new ideas and gives me more options as I build my practice.”
