ON VIEW: JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN | 'Through An Artist's Journal' | Until 19 May | Michael Reid Southern Highlands Continuing this weekend in our top-floor gallery, JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN presents 'Through An Artist's Journal', a dazzling new chapter in the artist's career. The strongest element of Julianne Ross Allcorn's work, which has earned her a loyal following in recent years, is an evocative sense of the artist's delight in her visual world. This world is in thrall to the flora and fauna of this ancient continent and guided by a rigorous pursuit of depicting the true majesty and magic of the bush. "There’s perspective in my drawing, but there’s no perspective at the same time. I would like the viewer to go on a journey with me. If someone asks me about the work, I often say stay in front of it for a few minutes and look at everything at once – the colours, the way the foliage is moving, the birds. And then close your eyes, and listen for what you saw. You know you are in the landscape because you’ve looked and focused. You will find yourself trying to recreate what you would hear if you were walking through it." @juliallcorn Julianne Ross Allcorn Take Me To The Moon, 2023 pencil and watercolour on birchwood panels 64 x 49 cm For more, please contact [email protected] #michaelreidart #australianartist #bushmagic #juliannerossallcorn #juliannerossallcornart #juliannerossallcornartist #contemporarypainting #contemporarylandscape #michaelreidsouthernhighlands

ON VIEW: EMILY GORDON | ‘Higher Ground’ | Until 2 June | Michael Reid Southern Highlands After receiving a fabulous response in its first week, with all works acquired on the day of opening, EMILY GORDON's ‘Higher Ground’ continues this weekend at Michael Reid Southern Highlands. The show presents an exquisite suite of urban scenes awash with light and abuzz with the energy and cheek-by-jowl eclecticism of Sydney's inner city. Gordon began taking these environments as her subject matter after moving to The Rocks in 2018. "I have an interest in painting my personal narrative," says the artist in a profile published by The Scrutineer and available to read on our website. "Painting where I find myself, painting the things I see in my daily life. I didn’t paint the city until I lived in the city." "I find moments around me that are visually captivating – this vista, this corner, this alley. About fifty per cent of the time, it’s me going about my business and something catches my eye. The other fifty per cent, I go exploring to see if I can find something interesting, the seed of an idea. I’m looking for moments of light and of rhythm.” Although the artist's paintings are devoid of figures, there is always the implication of human presence and activity – of ordinary life happening just inside the brick-and-stucco walls of the historic terrace houses. For the Scrutineer story, Michael Sharp and Ashley Mackevecius glimpsed life inside one such house when they visited the artist's studio, which is carved out of a modest workspace from an unused sitting room. Practising in the heart of her subject matter, Gordon is, therefore, best placed to speak to its compact beauty and quiet corners. Please visit us this weekend to experience ‘Higher Ground’, which coincides with Emily Gordon's shortlisting in the Emerging category of this year's Ravenswood Australian Women's Art Prize. COMING SOON: LLAEL McDONALD | ‘Savour’ | 6 June–7 July | Michael Reid Southern Highlands LLAEL McDONALD’s deliciously dark and atmospheric still-life oil studies have arrived at our Sydney gallery on their way to the Southern Highlands for the artist's show ‘Savour’, which opens early next month. One of the major stars at last year’s National Emerging Art Prize exhibition and a firm favourite among the judges and collectors in attendance, McDonald has honed her distinctive treatment of light and mood over more than 27 years, lending even the most ordinary objects an element of mystique and emotional charge. Citing the Flemish masters and Pre-Raphaelites as inspirations, McDonald captures the sumptuousness, noirish poeticism and precisely controlled tone of her artistic influences, albeit with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Shown here in progress inside the artist’s studio, the lush and beguiling works featured in ‘Savour’ see simple, effortlessly arranged produce skilfully imbued with drama, luminosity and brooding intensity. ON VIEW: JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN | ‘Through An Artist's Journal’ | Until 19 May | Michael Reid Southern Highlands We are delighted to present this beautiful, bespoke volume of original painted studies by JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN, handbound by the artist and finished with gold leaf. Accompanying her new series of intricately layered landscapes – on view in our upstairs gallery – this perfectly petite jewel is both an exquisite complement to Ross Allcorn's paintings and a captivating art object unto itself. Like the her series, the book plunges the viewer into the thickets of Australian flora, conjured with ghostly, wisp-like layers that gracefully overlap and enclose a colourful cast of native critters. Taking the reader inside her painting process and the material whirl of her studio, the book presents a dazzling sequence of original drawings and watercolours on handmade paper – each conjured with the energetic immediacy of a plein air study and dusted with smatterings of gold. It feels like a living extension of the artist’s series, which – as reflected by its title, ‘Through An Artist's Journal’ – is all about a painter channelling the energies of the landscape and bottling its bush magic. Available in only one edition, Ross Allcorn's handmade art book can be viewed and acquired at Michael Reid Southern Highlands. ONLINE NOW: THE SCRUTINEER | Edition XX with EMILY GORDON For the 20th edition of The Scrutineer, we visit EMILY GORDON at her home and studio in The Rocks, Sydney. Writer Michael Sharp spoke to the Oakland-born artist about her creative process in the lead-up to her solo show ‘Higher Ground’, which has now opened at Michael Reid Southern Highlands. Gordon is one of the bright stars in our stable of represented artists, selling out exhibition after exhibition across our Northern Beaches and Southern Highlands galleries. The artist is inspired by real scenes that surround her, whether cityscapes or landscapes, but the power of her work derives from something less tangible. “The things I am looking for in the composition are rhythm and light," says Gordon in her Scrutineer profile. "If I’m happy with the rhythm and I’m happy with the light, then everything else falls into place." “My current practice, and this does shift over time, is to begin with a loose sketch followed by a more composed sketch, just to spend some more time in that world, understanding the composition, understanding the proportions and making decisions about how to make it work as an artwork." "Then I start work on the board with an underpainting, which is like a drawing in yellow ochre paint – and that’s where the real building happens, where decisions are made about what is in, what is out and what needs adjustment." “The underpainting is critical for decision-making and once that’s down, it’s almost like a jigsaw. For example, I don’t paint a blue sky and then a cloud on top. If there’s a cloud, I will paint the cloud and then the blue will go around it, or vice versa.” Swipe to preview a selection of pictures from the profile. ONLINE NOW: A COLLECTOR’s VIEW Editon II | Haven in the heart of Berrima Walking through the home of this Southern Highlands collector is to embark on a passage from the original heritage architecture of the front (central dormer window, high-pitched galvanized iron roof, bull-nosed verandah) to a more modern, minimalist arrangement in the rear, with an impressive vaulted ceiling and oversized south and west-facing windows. This spanning of time and design sensibilities is also reflected in their art collection, which balances classical landscape pieces done in oils (judiciously selected from antiques stores) with contemporary works of figurative abstraction, held in pared-back shadowbox frames. Pairing new art acquisitions with antique works is a brilliant way to give context to your collection, to anchor emerging voices in the Australian scene with choice pieces from the turn of the century or earlier. A rich collision of styles can be struck, creating a potent record of changing values, from the academy style of yore to the expanded field of today. It can also be a useful way of seeing, on one wall, just how a contemporary artist borrows and meaningfully departs from tradition, throwing their experimentations into even sharper relief. Swipe to preview a selection of images from A Collector’s View II, featuring work by JULZ BERESFORD, ROSIE KEMARRE MORTON, JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN and more. NOW OPEN: EMILY GORDON | ‘Higher Ground’ | Until 2 June | Michael Reid Southern Highlands Today marks the much-anticipated launch of Michael Reid Northern Beaches signed artist EMILY GORDON's solo exhibition ‘Higher Ground’ at Michael Reid Southern Highlands. Across 21 works on board, Gordon captures the historic streetscapes and jumbled urban topography surrounding her Sydney home. Foliage spills over lacy Victorian balconies and gelato-toned facades in a dynamic interplay of light, colour and pattern. Her works dwell both in fine detail (the complex intersections of angular planes in a row of terrace houses) and vaguer gradations in form (a twilight sky and its broth of yellows and dark blues). At every moment, she appears to delight in testing her technical command. Gordon has achieved significant success since she committed to being an artist six years ago, including selection as a finalist in the 2021 National Emerging Art Prize and selling out her past four shows at Michael Reid Northern Beaches and Michael Reid Southern Highlands. “You are always growing. I have a process but not a fixed approach. For every painting, I ask, what does this painting need, what is special here and how can I bring that out visually,” she says. “Giving each work its own approach opens up new ideas and gives me more options as I build my practice.” ‘Higher Ground’ will be celebrated with an opening reception at the gallery this Saturday, 4 May, from 2 to 4 pm. Please join us at Michael Reid Southern Highlands to toast this beautiful new series. All works are available to view and acquire via our website. THIS WEEK: EMILY GORDON | ‘Higher Ground’ | 2 May–2 June | Michael Reid Southern Highlands Opening this week at Michael Reid Southern Highlands is ‘Higher Ground’, a highly anticipated new suite of beautiful, ebullient urban landscapes from EMILY GORDON, one of our Northern Beaches gallery’s represented artists. Gordon and her husband own a property in Gunning, situated between Goulburn and Yass in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. It was here that the artist first began painting the area’s landscapes. After relocating to The Rocks in 2018, Gordon started exploring this new metropolitan environment and its architectural details as her subjects, transposing her skilful treatment of light and shade to depict the inner-city’s hilly jumble of Victorian terraces and worker’s cottages overgrown with flowering vines and lit by the afternoon sun's amber glow. “I'm drawn to painting my personal narrative – depicting the places I find myself in and the everyday scenes I encounter,” says the artist, whose series opens this Thursday and will be celebrated with an opening reception on Saturday, 4 May. ON VIEW: MEG WALTERS | 'Space Between Dreams' | until 28 April | Michael Reid Southern Highlands This is the final weekend to view 'Space Between Dreams' by Newcastle-based painter and ceramicist MEG WALTERS. The artist’s landscapes spring to life through her impressionistic mark-making, beautifully evoking the gentle distortions of memory and half-remembered dreams. Paired with her dynamic ceramic pieces, this series of paintings reflects the artist's interest in the metaphysical and the sublime. “I aim to explore what is beyond this physical world,” says Walters, describing her series as “a visual meditation on loss, longing and the inter-connectedness of the human condition.” Meg Walters The Fallen, 2024 oil on linen 106 x 98 cm, Timber frame @megwalters #michaelreidsouthernhighlands @michaelreid #artonline #berrimalocal #megwalters #landscapepainting

ON VIEW: MEG WALTERS | ‘Space Between Dreams’ | Until 28 April | Michael Reid Southern Highlands Spritzed with magic and poeticism, MEG WALTERS’s ‘Space Between Dreams’ is described by the artist as “an enquiry into my personal involvement with what lies beyond, unseen and largely unexplored”. The artist’s hand-built ceramic pieces see strands of white raku spill out of vessels and fuse to form skeletal towers, developed using a ‘pinch and coil’ technique. Walters then covers this blank clay with rich and peculiar glazes, where moss greens mix with thin veins of blue. A delicate balance is struck between these work’s fine appearance and the ferocity with which they are formed. Walters has built a show about confines and freedom while offering an impactful reminder of the creative possibilities at the nexus of material and imagined worlds. 1. THE SCRUTINEER XIX: STEVE HOGWOOD For Edition XIX of The Scrutineer, we visit local blacksmith STEVE HOGWOOD at his forge in Wildes Meadow. Steve Hogwood first became aware of his future trade as a nine-year-old while riding his bike home from school one afternoon in the Suffolk village of Barking. There, he spotted smoke billowing from a building. “I could hear these clanging noises,” Hogwood recalls. “Curiosity got the better of me and I discovered it was the local blacksmith.” Small pockets like Steve’s workshop in the Southern Highlands village of Wildes Meadow are where old artisan skills survive. His shed is overflowing with rusted tools collected over the decades, as well as objects awaiting repair and restoration while enormous bellows, an assortment of anvils and cogs, cuts of metal, wooden carriage wheels, wringers and a range of other metal machines are distributed around the yard. The company’s motto is: Forging the future while restoring the past. ON VIEW: JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN | 'Through An Artist's Jornal' | Until 19 May Julianne Ross Allcorn sketch-paints in layers, sometimes panoramic in scope but always hyper observant. From top to bottom, left to right Allcorn’s paintings read as if you are standing within a grove of native trees. In the gum trees, you see through the brush and into canopy, to witness a densely packed and active world. ON VIEW: JULIANNE ROSS ALCORN | ‘Through An Artist’s Journal’ | Until 12 May | Southern Wild Co interview There's always a sketchbook in Julianne's pocket, packed with quick interpretations of the visuals, aromas, and auditory stimuli unfolding in her surroundings. "The sketchbooks are my reference. I have to write what I was hearing to take myself back to that moment in time. A photo doesn’t do that. It doesn’t capture the sounds or the smells. You’ve stood there to sketch it and write about it, so all your senses come alive because you are noticing," the artist tells Southern Wild Co upon the launch of their 'Bush Magic' fragrance collaboration. "There’s perspective in my drawing, but there’s no perspective at the same time. I would like the viewer to go on a journey with me. If someone asks me about the work, I often say stay in front of it for a few minutes and look at everything at once – the colours, the way the foliage is moving, the birds. CONCEPT STORE | SALLY GABORI | Michael Reid Southern Highlands The Concept Store at Michael Reid Southern Highlands is freshly stocked with a collection of beautiful books from some of this country's leading First Nations artists and arts communities, joining our extended offering of Thames & Hudson titles by Amber Creswell Bell. This stunning monograph celebrating artist SALLY GABORI (c. 1924–2015) is among the highlights in our updated library of exquisitely curated, richly illustrated volumes. In 2022, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presented the first exhibition in France for Gabori, who began painting at the age of 81 and produced more than 3000 paintings over 10 years. Gathering paintings from the Fondation Cartier exhibition alongside other examples of her work, this vibrant tome invites readers to discover Gabori’s remarkable practice – deeply rooted in the history of her people, the Kaiadilt, and attesting to an extraordinary pictorial modernity. Contributions by Nicholas Evans, a specialist of the Kaiadilt culture and close to Gabori’s family, and Judith Ryan and Bruce McLean put traditions and artistic practices in perspective to tell Gabori’s story, exploring the strength of her art and the substantial cultural legacy she left. The entire collection of books available at the Michael Reid Southern Highlands Concept Store can be explored on our website. ON VIEW: MEG WALTERS | ‘Space Between Dreams’ | Until 28 April | Michael Reid Southern Highlands The latest exhibition from MEG WALTERS is continuing this week in our downstairs gallery. ‘Space Between Dreams’ is the artist's first series largely painted on raw linen, a surface whose pronounced warp and weft introduces a newly tactile dimension to her paintings. The artist’s bewitching dreamscapes flicker into view with light washes of paint drizzled and dashed in overlapping brushstrokes. These works achieve an almost afterimage effect as paint bleeds and dries into the coarsely textured canvas, appearing to observe the weathering and fading of pure colour over time in a way that feels akin to the gentle distortions of memory. The subtle, shapeshifting quality evoked by this materiality connects with the artist’s interest in liminal zones, expressing a sense of dreamy disorientation and languid oscillations between different states of being. ON VIEW: JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN | ‘Through An Artist’s Journal’ | Until 12 May ‘Through An Artist’s Journal’ is a captivating new collection of intricately crafted landscapes by JULIANNE ROSS ALLCORN, currently showing in our top-floor gallery. After being thrust into major art collector conversations in 2022, when the Art Gallery of NSW selected her as a finalist in both the Archibald Prize and Wynne Prize, Ross Allcorn's new show immerses the viewer in a fabulous tangle of Australian native bush – brilliantly conjured with wisp-like brushstrokes and smatterings of gold-flecked magic. Rewarding close attention, the artist's sprawling, multi-panel paintings reveal a cast of colourful critters nestled among the landscape's intricately detailed thickets. These playful details are built up layer by layer in ethereal, translucent sweeps over a plywood surface, which preserves moments of negative space and textural interest between the dense floral profusion. ON VIEW: MEG WALTERS | ‘Space Between Dreams’ | Until 28 April | Michael Reid Southern Highlands Now on view in the Southern Highlands downstairs gallery, ‘Space Between Dreams’ by MEG WALTERS pairs the artist’s ethereal, impressionistic landscape paintings with an assembly of her striking ceramic sculptures. The subtle, shapeshifting quality evoked by Walter’s dual materiality connects with her interest in liminal zones, suggesting dreamlike disorientation and languid oscillations between different states of being. With enigmatic forms emerging from effervescent pools of pastel and earth tones, there is a sense that what we are viewing is less an actual landscape than a series of inchoate scenes impressed on the mind – like evanescent, hazily recalled reveries. This body of work exudes a quiet, meditative energy, even as its tonal nuance and layers of abstraction bring ebullience and movement to its surroundings. ‘Space Between Dreams’ arrives after several sell-out exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Bermuda and beyond. Spritzed with magic and poeticism, it places the artist’s paintings in conversation with ceramics that similarly move between different modes: from sinuous and spindly to voluptuously grounded. Together, the ceramics and paintings celebrate the creative possibilities at the nexus of material and imagined worlds. STOCKROOM SPOTLIGHT: NICOLA WOODCOCK | ‘Bush Notes Spider Grevillea' “The medium leaves little room for fussiness," says NICOLA WOODCOCK, describing the process that brings her exquisite, energetic botanical studies to life. “I work quickly, finding the best way to describe what is in front of me with minimal detail." Depicting Australian native flora with a contemporary, unpretentious style, the artist works to simplify forms and amplify colour. “I aim to give a true representation of the plant, to honour its actual make-up," she says. “But at the same time, I’m not interested in a scientifically accurate drawing. I hope to evoke a feeling of awe, gratitude or comfort." ‘Bush Notes Spider Grevillea' by Nicola Woodcock is now available to acquire from the Southern Highlands stockroom online and in the gallery. Congratulations to EMILY GORDON on being selected as a finalist in the 2024 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize. Represented by Michael Reid Northern Beaches, the Oakland-born painter has been shortlisted in the prestigious awards program’s Emerging Artist Prize for her work ‘Grey Day – St Vincent’s’. Beautifully rendering an intricate jumble of inner-city rooftops, the artist’s sweeping urban scene is crested by snaking rows of Victorian terraces that roll across Sydney’s tumbling topography. The fabulous news of Gordon’s Ravenswood Prize shortlisting arrives as we gear up for her second solo exhibition at our Southern Highlands gallery, ‘Higher Ground’, which opens on Thursday, 2 May. ‘Higher Ground’ will be welcomed with an opening reception at Michael Reid Southern Highlands on Saturday, 4 May. Works from the series are now available to preview in Sydney before they travel to Berrima for next month’s exhibition. All of the winners in this year’s Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize will be announced at the Opening Night event on Friday, 10 May. Tickets for the Ravenswood event are on sale now, and we look forward to celebrating with Gordon and her fellow finalists – including Professional Artist Prize-nominees TAMARA DEAN, BETTY CHIMNEY and GAYPALANI WANAMBI. ON VIEW: MEG WALTERS | ‘Space Between Dreams’ | Until 28 April | Michael Reid Southern Highlands The latest body of work from Newcastle-based artist MEG WALTERS, ‘Space Between Dreams’ presents six hand-built ceramic sculptures in a compelling conversation with her moody and ethereal paintings. As with her oils on raw linen – and the poem by Edgar Allen Poe that inspired her exhibition’s title – the artist’s ceramics have a fluid, shapeshifting quality that playfully suggests imagined worlds between waking life and the subconscious. This otherworldly aura emerges from the work’s materiality, as her ceramics shift in mode and form from sinuous and spindly to voluptuously grounded. In pieces such as ‘Darlington’ (pictured), fine strands of white raku spill out of a central vessel and fuse to form skeletal towers, which the artist developed using a ‘pinch and coil’ technique. Walters then covers this blank clay with rich and peculiar glazes that nod to the natural worlds similarly evoked by her abstract landscape paintings – including mustards and mossy jewel greens highlighted with fine blue veins. A fine balance is struck between the delicate appearance of these sculptural ceramic works and the brute force and heat required in their making. ON VIEW: COUNTRY STYLE 2024 I ‘Our Country’ | Until 7 April | Michael Reid Southern Highlands There is still another week to view works by JO WHITE and VICKI YATJIKI CULLINAN in the fifth edition of our annual exhibition in partnership with Country Style magazine, which continues in our upstairs gallery and ground floor exhibition space until next Sunday, 7 April. Working on some of the most expansive canvases of her career, White’s series of paintings for the 2024 Country Style exhibition presents sweeping aerial views of quintessentially Australian suburban and semi-rural streetscapes. By placing the viewer in the sky, the artist invites us to peek over the fence of these typical weatherboard bungalows and spy a tapestry of small but evocative details – from a Rheem water heater and a classic hills hoist to a motorcade of Kingswoods and a game of backyard cricket. Also on view is Cullinan’s stunning new series of paintings that express her sweeping visions of Indulkana Country. The respected Yankunytjatjara artist and daughter of Emily Cullinan has spent more than two decades working in painting, printmaking and drawing – always in connection to Tjukurpa (Ancestral Stories) – and was most recently the recipient of the Hadley’s Art Prize for her work ‘Ngayuku Ngura (My Country)’. Paintings by White and Cullinan from our Country Style 2024 exhibition are available to view and purchase on our website. COMING SOON: EMILY GORDON | ‘Higher Ground’ | 2 May–2 June | Michael Reid Southern Highlands Next month, Michael Reid Southern Highlands will welcome our first solo show from EMILY GORDON – one of the bright stars of our Northern Beaches gallery’s stable of represented artists. In her sweeping and extraordinarily detailed city studies, the Oakland-born artist beautifully depicts the historic streetscapes and jumbled urban topography surrounding her inner Sydney home, with foliage cascading over lacy Victorian balconies and gelato-toned facades in a dynamic interplay of light, shadows, colour and pattern. “The things I am looking for in the composition are rhythm and light,” says Gordon in a profile by Michael Sharp for forthcoming edition of The Scrutineer. “If I’m happy with the rhythm and I’m happy with the light, then everything else falls into place.” A strong narrative line weaves through each new body of work by the artist, who has named her series ‘Higher Ground’. “The title refers to me revisiting places and memories in The Rocks,” says the artist, “an area where I’ve been working pretty intensively for the past five years, trying to see familiar topics from a new perspective and also discovering new vistas that I hadn’t previously appreciated.” Works from ‘Higher Ground’ by Emily Gordon have now arrived at our Eora/Sydney gallery and are available to preview by appointment before they travel to the Southern Highlands for the exhibition opening. ON VIEW: MEG WALTERS | ‘Space Between Dreams’ | Until 28 April Showing this weekend in our downstairs gallery and set to be celebrated with an opening reception today from 2 to 4pm, ‘Space Between Dreams’ by MEG WALTERS pairs the artist's ethereal, impressionistic landscape paintings with an assembly of her striking ceramic sculptures. Working for the first time with raw linen – a surface whose pronounced warp and weft brings a newly tactile dimension to her paintings – the artist’s bewitching dreamscapes flicker into view via light washes of paint drizzled and dashed in overlapping brushstrokes. These works achieve an almost afterimage effect as paint bleeds into the coarsely textured canvas, observing the weathering of pure colour in ways akin to the gentle distortions of memory. The subtle, shapeshifting quality evoked by this materiality connects with the artist’s interest in liminal zones, suggesting dreamlike disorientation and languid oscillations between different states of being. With enigmatic forms emerging from effervescent pools of pastel and earth tones, there is a sense that what we are viewing is less an actual landscape than a series of inchoate scenes impressed on the mind – like evanescent, hazily recalled reveries. These works exude a quiet, meditative energy – even as their tonal nuance and layers of abstraction bring ebullience and movement to their surroundings. ‘Space Between Dreams’ arrives after several sell-out exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Bermuda and beyond. THE SCRUTINEER • STEVE HOGWOOD For Edition XIX of The Scrutineer, we visit local blacksmith STEVE HOGWOOD at his forge in Wildes Meadow. Steve Hogwood first became aware of his future trade as a nine-year-old while riding his bike home from school one afternoon in the Suffolk village of Barking. There, he spotted smoke billowing from a building. “I could hear these clanging noises,” Hogwood recalls. “Curiosity got the better of me and I discovered it was the local blacksmith.” The blacksmith, named Cliff, was “a gruff old guy and I was immediately told to piss off! But I kept stopping off there on my way home, promising to stay out of the way if I could watch. I gradually ingratiated myself with him as he realised I was genuine and he let me do jobs like filling up the slop bucket with water, moving tools and pulling the bellows.” “My mother hated it because I would come home covered in dust and soot, but she let me go because she could see how much I enjoyed it.” “I became fascinated with metalwork. I was just mesmerised by it.” Edition XIX of The Scrutineer online now at 🔗 in bio @1910_ironworks 📸@ashley.mackevicius #thescrutineer #southernhighlands #berrima #berrimalocal #michaelreidsouthernhighlands #michaelreid #1910ironworks

Cullinan has been creating for almost 30 years at the Indulkana art centre Iwantja Arts, where she has been a director for a decade. “Painting, for me, is about expressing who I am and what I’m feeling, as well as celebrating the Country and culture that are so important to me,” says Cullinan in an extensive profile featured in the new Art Issue of Country Style magazine. “Painting is also a teaching tool,” she adds. “We use our paintings as a way of sharing stories, Country and Tjukurpa (ancestral creation stories), as well as what it was like here in the old days – like the mission times when people were living and working at the stations.” At Iwantja, Cullinan paints alongside her sister, Valerie, and mother, Emily. “We’re always together, whether we’re painting or sharing stories over a cup of tea,” she says. “I often have my granddaughters come into the art centre and Emily and I show them our paintings and share stories with them.” Read the entire story in the March edition of Country Style magazine– on sale now – and visit our website to view and acquire work by Vicki Yatjiki Cullinan and all the artists featured in this year’s Country Style show. JO WHITE in COUNTRY STYLE 2024 I ‘Our Country’ | Until 2 April The ten paintings created by JO WHITE for this year's Country Style showcase are aerial views of places that express a quintessentially Australian experience. These sprawling landscapes are divided into quarter-acre blocks and dotted with a loose mosaic of corrugated roofs. It is a landscape overwhelmingly defined by rich carpets of green, cropped at all hours of the day by push mowers. It represents the Australian dream as it first flowered in the 1950s and 1960s. White spreads these views over the largest canvases of her career, making a bold departure from her constellations of rebus-like paintings spoofing Australian slang and 'Hottest 100' odes to iconic songs. “Being a country kid myself, I know that many of us grow up and move away to the city to go to university and get jobs,” White tells Samantha Van Egmond for Country Style. “I think we all tend to look back with rose-coloured glasses to a time when everything felt simpler and easier, and a lot more fun. Sometimes my art can offer a link to the past, and maybe it’s nice to have that little memory" These paintings have all the constituent elements of suburban genre scenes, but the perspective is skewed; the tale is told vertically, not horizontally. As though suggesting the weightlessness of memory, White has placed her viewer in the sky. From this vantage point, we can admire a vast tapestry of little details — a Rheem Water heater or motorcade of parked Kingswoods. NEXT WEEK: MEG WALTERS | ‘Space Between Dreams’ | 28 March Next week, Meg Walters will bring her much-anticipated solo exhibition to the Southern Highlands, 'Space Between Dreams'. Here, she will present six new ceramic pieces and nine sprawling paintings, or ‘dreamscapes’. These works suggest a "state where beings exist in a transcendental limbo – a liminal space between worlds that is rarely perceptible." To depict this flickering between states of being, Walters paints with diaphanous layers of oil on raw linen - a material sheer enough that pigment bleeds through to the other side. By mirroring the properties of her substrate, the artist achieves compositions of great dynamism and strange depth. BEN WATERS | ‘Immerse’ | Until 31 March | Michael Reid Murrurundi The Murrurundi debut of Northern Beaches-based artist BEN WATERS is entering its final few weeks, with the show continuing this weekend before closing after the Easter Long Weekend. Don't miss this extraordinary collection of landscapes, which beautifully distil the artist’s experiences of immersion in the coastal bush of the Pittwater region. Painted with his singular mix of graphic and organic line work with washes of brilliant colour, the works in this series are an invitation into natural worlds alive with magic, poeticism and emotional heft. Aptly titled ‘Immerse’, the show continues until Easter Sunday, 31 March, and launches an exciting array of Ben Waters projects set to arrive later this year. ON VIEW: JULZ BERESFORD | ‘As Time Drifts on a River’s Path’ | Until 24 March JULZ BERESFORD’s sublime exhibition ‘As Time Drifts on a River’s Path’ continues this week, with works available to view and acquire online and at the gallery until this Sunday, 24 March. The artist’s expressive, emotionally charged landscapes celebrate the natural features and dramatic topography of two distinct regions with which she has had deep ties since childhood: the Snowy Mountains and The Hawkesbury River. “I tend not to paint the Hawkesbury all year because I yearn to improve my trade and I believe to get better I need to shift gears to a different landscape,” says Beresford. “It’s important for me to jump around a little bit. It keeps me alive and makes me really think about what I am trying to achieve.” To this end, Beresford says she constantly questions herself during the painting process, asking whether she is expressing the feeling of the place when she paints. “I want to capture the moments when I was on the water or the magic of the mountains. I want to remember the way I held the paintbrush while I was out there ‘plein air’ because it felt right. Each painting has its own story.” Explore the series via the link in our bio. Loosing myself in the art of expression is complete and utter bliss! It takes me somewhere else, my emotions are up and down and I’m completely consumed in the process of painting. It’s an undiluted spillage of expression. Each one of my paintings is a journey of discovery, it’s like a conversation between me and the untouched language of painting. I’m so very grateful to all the collectors who connect with my art and by doing so encourage me to keep improving. Thank you so much!! 🩵🩵🩵 Thank you also to @amber_creswell_bell who continually supports and encourages me along on my journey. ❤️.
