Across 21 works on board, Gordon captures the historic streetscapes and jumbled urban topography surrounding her Sydney home. Foliage spills over lacy Victorian balconies and gelato-toned facades in a dynamic interplay of light, colour and pattern. Her works dwell both in fine detail (the complex intersections of angular planes in a row of terrace houses) and vaguer gradations in form (a twilight sky and its broth of yellows and dark blues). At every moment, she appears to delight in testing her technical command. I have a process but not a fixed approach. THIS WEEK: EMILY GORDON | ‘Higher Ground’ | 2 May–2 June | Michael Reid Southern Highlands Opening this week at Michael Reid Southern Highlands is ‘Higher Ground’, a highly anticipated new suite of beautiful, ebullient urban landscapes from EMILY GORDON, one of our Northern Beaches gallery’s represented artists. Gordon and her husband own a property in Gunning, situated between Goulburn and Yass in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. It was here that the artist first began painting the area’s landscapes. After relocating to The Rocks in 2018, Gordon started exploring this new metropolitan environment and its architectural details as her subjects, transposing her skilful treatment of light and shade to depict the inner-city’s hilly jumble of Victorian terraces and worker’s cottages overgrown with flowering vines and lit by the afternoon sun's amber glow. “I'm drawn to painting my personal narrative – depicting the places I find myself in and the everyday scenes I encounter,” says the artist, whose series opens this Thursday and will be celebrated with an opening reception on Saturday, 4 May. Represented by Michael Reid Northern Beaches, the Oakland-born painter has been shortlisted in the prestigious awards program’s Emerging Artist Prize for her work ‘Grey Day – St Vincent’s’. Thrilled to announce that my piece “Prudence in the Daintree Room” is a finalist in the 2024 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art prize! Honored to be amongst the 117 finalists chosen from a pool of 1,616, and so grateful to be considered alongside some seriously talented women, all in for the highest value professional art prize for women in Australia 🇦🇺 😳❤️ But more than anything, I can’t wait to tell Prue — I flew up to the Daintree in Jan 2023 so she could sit for this piece, and we’ve stayed in touch frequently since. I met Prue more than a decade ago when she gave me a 2hr walking tour of the Daintree (she was 76 at the time, now an amazingly spritely 87!). She is simply an incredible person: a conservationist, and pioneer of eco-tourism in the Daintree (the oldest contiguous rainforest on the planet!) and a lifelong educator who is knowledgeable beyond measure. Prue’s outstanding character really stuck with me all this time, and inspired me to create this work. She embodies my Bush-Wah-Zee series- flanked by exclusively Daintree flora and the local cassowary “Big Bertha” who has lived on Prue’s land for decades, keeping the species numbers strong in the area for years. Prue is a powerhouse of a woman and it was a joy to paint her- she deserves every honor that comes her way as she fights for the rainforest she loves to be able to continue to exist in its best form for hundreds of years to come. More about my work below. ---- Beleaguered by constant thoughts of home, safety, security and comfort, my new series, Homing Instinct reflects on notions of nesting. I am motivated by colour and nostalgia, having a love for fabrics and historical references. This work responds to these influences and furthers my exploration of painting vintage ceramics in an alluring arrangement. I’ve been drawn to the fantastical colour and silvery highlights of vintage lustreware, combined with the opulence of a Van Eyck inspired bed, to create a symbolic gesture of containment. Caroline Rothwell’s painting 'Vault' has won the $35,000 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize (2021). . 'Vault' is an interrogation of the wunderkammer (cabinet of curiosity) - a 19th century practice of collecting specimens from nature and indigenous culture material displayed in custom designed cabinets in museum houses. Congratulations to the winners and highly commended artists of this year’s Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, Caroline Rothwell (Professional Artist Winner), Symone Male (Emerging Artist Winner) and Imelda Wood Melamurrk (Indigenous Emerging Artist Winner). All so well deserved and fabulous entries. The virtual opening of the prize was held last Friday, it was an incredible feeling to sit and watch with my family and listen to the words of respect and recognition for women in the arts and why it is so important for this day and age. Here is my entry into the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize. Mum Are You Alright Oil and Acrylic on Cotton Canvas 76.3cm x 101.7cm This woman conceived nineteen pregnancies, birthed eleven children, and experienced the loss of eight miscarriages. She raised her family in the country, alone, without help from extended family who are now estranged to her due to an unspoken heartbreak. She finds herself reminiscing memories of the past, of what could have been, and the reality of life is overwhelming. She has a history of silent catastrophes and she wants to dive her heavy heart (the one with a sun kissed glow) into as many wandering waves and force her blood to flow.
