A crucial part of building with bamboo is the treatment process, rendering this sustainable material fully sustainable- making it last. There are many ways in which the design itself protects the bamboo, but it starts before that, straight after harvest. It's not just us who love bamboo- the sugars inside make it highly attractive to insects as well! To remove these sugars from the bamboo we use a boric acid solution (don't worry this isn't much stronger than table salt!) • There are many ways to treat bamboo- which we go through during our 11 day course. During our 11 and 5 day courses we are consistently astounded by the level of creativity our participants bring to the table. Rey, from our June course bought us another first- a bamboo buggy for his bamboo roller coaster back home in California. Formed out of bamboo splits, and large enough to fit a couple, Rey's piece was elegant and functional. • It's always impossible until it's done. We live surrounded by this giant grass brimming with possibilities, which can take so many forms from tray tables to 6 story structures. During our August Bamboo U, Felix from Germany created this mini Bamboo aquaponics model at Scott's design and carpentry station. Before we knew it, it had been populated with wildlife and become a work of art. • There are as many solutions as there are problems, and aquaponics is a fantastic way to grow local produce wherever you are. Aquaponics translates literally as 'putting fish to work' (aquaculture= raising fish in a controlled environment, ponics= ' to work' in Latin) • Taking a sustainable building material- bamboo, and using it to create sustainable food production- aquaponics! We had 36 participants join us from 15 countries, each with their own unique experience and point of view to bring to the table! • We were lucky enough to have master carpenter Joerg Stamm with us here throughout the course offering the unique opportunity for both theoretical and hands on learning. We had 3 workshop stations in session, including Joerg's where our participants were creating a structure formed of 7 hyperbolic paraboloids.
