Contemplating this build. She's a 3/4 ton 6.2L diesel w 700r4. The trucks body is immaculate and she runs / drives superb. I got a set of four turbines with the rig so I'm leaning towards a full build with 37 inch BFGs. Despite their toughness, I prefer to delete the semi float 14 bolt and upgrade to a 14 full float. I'll make a post soon on how to identify a semi float vs a full float. I know to some of you that seems like a piece of cake, but to the standard human this is info that'll be helpful in acquisitions and builds. Draggin around the new prize, a farm fresh New Mexico box of rocks. Always obliged to bring in another orphaned CUCV. We fired her up for the test drive this morning before sunrise at a whopping 9 degrees. Cycled the glow plugs a few times for good measure and with that first crank she came to life. Good runner and a smooth driver. She does have some bumps and bruises, but overall she's got a very solid body with no rust issues. Interior is in good shape as well. Very OG. Fun truck to bring in. With starting to do some longer runs on the truck, it still had the original 40 year old oil lines on it. If one goes on the highway it usually doesn’t make for happy bearings. Definitely can't wait to get the new engine gone through for my k1500. Decided to do a few things like head studs vs head bolts, for better clamping force on the head gaskets, and a few other odds and ends since it's easier with the engine out and should hopefully keep me from having issues in the future. Internals on this engine are definitely in really nice shape, so that'll be nice too. The old engine decided to die, but she already had a minor compression issue already, so the new one should start easier when it's colder out. The old 6.2 diesel didn't like it when it was cold and liked a few glow plug cycles to start easier. At least I already had the new engine when the old one died. I had to steal the battery out of the wood truck for a different rig last week so yesterday when I went to throw in a replacement I couldn't get myself to do it. The battery tray looked like it came from the East Coast. So I mobbed to the parts truck aisle to see what I had. Found a less crusty candidate so I pulled it off and brought it over for install. Once I pulled out the old one I noticed some wires that had been chewed by rats at the former owners compound. Driver side ground on the core support, as well as both wires to the drivers fender marker. They chewed the wires all the way to the bulb housing so I had to run back out to the parts section and find a housing with a length of wire I could work with. Got that dialed in and moved on to Glow Plugs. I'll have her in the shop soon so I can go through more of the wires that the rodents customized. Someone got to come inside out of the cold for a little check up. This Suburban is such a clean OG survivor. Her six two diesel fires up in the bitter cold and runs superb. Trans shifts like a seasoned professional and tcase functions flawlessly. The color combo is one that if described I probably wouldn't think much of. Yet here she is in front of me and I can't look away. This truck came out of a hangar on a small private air field in Oregon. So technically not a barn find, she's a hangar find. I scooped up some upgraded axles for her from a dismantler friend out on the Oregon Coast. 14 bolt full float and Dana 44 out of a mid 70s k20. Stoked on this rig. Slapped a fresh tailgate on this K30 a couple days ago. The one this rig came with was an aftermarket unit of non General Motors origin. It was a solid color match and had the proper amount of wear, but in the back of my mind I knew it wasnt legit. I'm picky with my tailgates and I can't let good trucks rep garbage so I went to the parts section to do a little shopping. I had this perfectly worn in unit amongst my stash so I tossed her on and I'm thinkin it looks pretty decent. This gate was off a k20 that had trim, but the trim is long gone and only some old adhesive remains. Remnants of a 6.2 Diesel badge linger in the right location so to the trained eye it's proper for this Detroit sportin wood truck. Another project since the new year was getting power closer to the @taruca_usa 270 awning for the lights instead of having a cord going all the way to the dashboard in the truck. While at it I powered one of my fans. I needed 12v for the lights and 24v for the fan. I used the leads off my Victron 24v to 12v converter. Required getting wires about 2/3 of the way under the countertop to the back of the truck. Then ran them up inside the wall. I added a couple of USB ports at the same time. Around New Years I took on upgrading the almost 40 year old rear springs as they seemed to be sagging a little since installing the lift. @ats_springs in Souderton, PA was contacted to get the correct springs ( GM 14071877 or Dayton 22-755) and were great with customer service. After getting everything installed the rear is sitting a little over an inch higher and and rides better. Well, pretty soon, this beast will be getting a heart transplant, mostly just so I can make sure the engine will be reliable for daily driving use. I'm also planning to throw some boost at it with a turbo, so I want to headstud it and make sure the internals are up to the task. That will also allow me to rebuild the current engine for a spare since it'll work as a replacement for any of my trucks, as long as the engine block is in good health. I'll also be wiring up the new gauge cluster that has a factory tach for the diesel when I can, too, and ditching the moon style gauges she currently has. Back to the Northern Coast to scoop an '83 K10 1/2 Ton 4x4 shortbed w 6.2L Detroit Diesel. This shorty is sporting the rare NP440 / NP833 4 Speed Bolt Action. The typical 4 Speed, the Muncie SM465 4 Speed has Granny Low and Gears 1 through 3 [L,1,2,3] whereas this transmission has Gears 1 through 3 and Overdrive [1,2,3,O/D]. That overdrive makes it a rather attractive setup for a daily or cruiser. These were offered from '81-'87, but we tend to see these transmissions in '82 & '83 half ton or light duty three quarter ton diesel trucks. Air Conditioning, Tilt Column, Auto Windows, Auto Locks, Auto Locking Hubs, etc. Lots of top tier options for a sweet little truck. It was a long weekend before Thanksgiving putting on the 30th Annual Harrisburg Farm Show Indoor Race with MCQMRC. This year’s format was different, two days with a total of 302 cars in 34 races. Arrived at 10:30pm Friday, ran heats 10am - 8:30pm Saturday, ran mains 9am - 9pm Sunday, tore down and left at 11:45 Sunday, and finally enjoyed a beer at 2:15am Monday with a hot shower. Lots of work, little sleep, but the kids had a great time. Well, I got the new front diff swapped in along with the posi-lock setup for the front axle disconnect for the 4wd. I definitely like that set up for the 4wd better since it simplifies the 4wd system and gets rid of the thermal actuator that can cool off if it gets wet or it's cold enough out , so that's nice. Also, I got some new tie rods and adjusting sleeves that are a little beefier than stock since I had to remove them to swap the diff. Will get her aligned on Tuesday since I have an appointment for that. Also got a newer style guage cluster to replace the moon style one she currently has along with adding a tachometer. Got the new power seat from a 96 Tahoe installed in the old girl. Had to modify the transmission hump slightly so the seat fit, but other than that, it fit nicely. It's definitely a lot more comfortable than the old worn bench seat, and I got the new seat for a really good price since I only paid about $55 at the junkyard. I still have to wire up the passenger side, but I believe it's just lumber support since the base itself is manual, so it's not super important. Next weekend, I should be installing the new front diff so that 4wd works again, and I'm still leaning towards getting the cable operated set up for the front axle disconnect just so I don't have to worry about wiring or a actuator keeping the 4wd from working when I need it. #gmt400 #manual #sm465 #62diesel #diesel #detroitdiesel #ididiesel #quadstartuning #workforit #projecttruck #builtnotbought
