The MC5 were true blue collar proto-punk revolutionary rockers as can only come from Detroit. They honed their chops playing any place they could around the Motor City, earning themselves a reputation as high-intensity live performers. First and foremost they were a kick-ass hard rock band but drew inspiration from soul, gospel, free jazz, radical left-wing politics, and the Beat Generation as well. The politics became a very important part of their art as the 60’s raged on. They played for 8 hours as part of the protests against the war in Vietnam at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, an event that was broken up by violently by police. The craziness of the times was reflected in the fury of their music. Eventually they were signed to Elektra Records and recorded their debut album live at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, at gigs on October 30 and 31 of 1968. The album eventually saw release in early 1969 and helped spread their vibe nationally. Time in the spotlight was relatively short lived for them and their career trajectory ended up being more volatile and turbulent than their now legendary live performances. They broke up in 1972. In the ensuing decades they have become regarded as godfathers of punk rock and highly influential on much of the rock music that followed them, especially anything with a political/revolutionary bent. Sadly, only drummer Dennis Thompson is still alive to feel the love the fans have for the MC5. Rob Tyner (vocals), Fred “Sonic” Smith (rhythm guitar), Michael Davis (bass), and Wayne Kramer (lead guitar) have all passed away. Kramer’s death was the most recent, in February of this year. He’d be celebrating his 76th birthday this week. So, in his memory,and in honor of the legacy of the MC5, I am going to kick out the jams loudly and proudly. Enjoy yourselves! My second Mcleod clutch master cylinder replacement. When they say you need to be dead on, on the rod alignment, they are right. Had all kind of problems that I didn’t know what was causing it. Too much to write to explain the problem I was experiencing. Anyways, I took my time and adjust the firewall bracket that the Mcleod master cylinder mounts onto. Had to remove hella shit just to get to the bracket. Now, clutch pedal doesn’t make noise like something binding when I step in the clutch pedal, no slight grinding while slowly going into gear, take off is easier now, and going into reverse gear is easy as well. Hella relieve it was just the clutch master cylinder. Not Merch - My contribution to the Contemporary Conceptual Art World. Each individual fiber sculpture is meant to be worn down with time and usage. Next up is Alma Thomas, a member of the Washington Color School Art Movement. Alma was one of if not the first woman to graduate with a Bachelors of Art in 1924, she was an art teacher for 35 years of her life, at the age of 50 she went back to college to study art history and painting. It was only in her retirement at the age of 68 that she pursued a full time art practice. She would go on to become one of the most renowned American Color Theorists of the Modern Art Movement and she painted it all in her kitchen. She was also the first African-American Woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In viewing "Pansies In Washington" one can see why her work was so admired. The simplicity, the intensity of color, the smaller brushstrokes creating the larger shape, the negative space and the overall composition come together in a hypnotizing rhythm to demand one's attention and invoke emotion. It is on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. I hope to make it there one of these days. Earl boasted a #riviera floor-level gas heater. Whilst we can see the benefits this solution brings (underfloor mounted/external flue etc) we didn’t feel it’s going to be right for us with little paws running about the caravan 🐕, so we will be heating more conventionally. Released #onthisdayinzappahistory #1969 An Evening with Wild Man Fischer #WildManFischer. Produced by #FrankZappa and released on his Bizarre record label. The album is split into four different areas on each record side for the type of song they contain. Some of side one had audio clips of live street performances where he would ask passerby to hear a song for a dime with percussion noises from Art Tripp added in. Side two is a collection of A cappella songs from Larry, with him also occasionally using a guitar to strum or use as percussion. Side three is filled with Fischer's first songs, and his stories of making them, as well as more street performances with Art's percussion. The final side includes a "psychedelic" rock song called Circles, and The Wild Man Fischer Story, which had Fischer sing about his home life by year. The song "Merry Go Round" as well as Fischer's remark of "You call that doing your thing?" during "New Kind of Songs for Sale" were referenced in the spoken dialogue segments of both Zappa's Lumpy Gravy and Civilization Phase III.

Elvis at The International Hotel in Las Vegas, 1969. Having failed in Vegas 13 years prior his return to Vegas, Elvis was understandability nervous. But he has no reason for concern. He sang great, & the fan response was overwhelming. The series of concerts broke house records, drawing more than 100,000 people & grossing 1.5 million dollars. He earned a reported $100,000 per week. Elvis returned to Las Vegas in the late 1969, playing July to August then returning in 1970. Elvis would play all over the country in the ‘70s, but it was Las Vegas that would forever become associated with this period oh his life. The common pattern was to play Vegas for a series of concerts every January, often returning later in the year for another engagement, & visit other cities all over the country in between The historic idea for Elvis’ return to Las Vegas was negotiated by Colonel Tom Parker and Alex Shoofey, president of the International Hotel, owned by Kirk Kerorian. The Colonel took notes on the tablecloth as they hammered out & deal, including a proviso that if Shoofey left the hotel, the contract, could be renegotiated. In 1971, Kerkorian sold & hotel to Baron Hilton, whereupon Shoofrey retired, and veteran hotel executive Henry Lewin took over. Soon after, Lewin – a legendarily tough negotiator himself – was visited by the Colonel, toting the old tablecloth with, among other things, the scribbled contract renegotiation clause. Suffice it to say, Lewin made a new deal. The new live shows were about the King himself. In other words, they were about glitter and glitz as well as musicianship. They were choregraphed around his image- his arrival on the stage was dramatized, as was his departure. Elvis worked each crowd as if it would be his last. No longer the supercharged Hillbilly Cat, Elvis was now consummate professional: smooth, powerful and passionate, already seeming more myth than man. Elvis had an intutitive feeling for what his audience wanted to hear. The order of the songs was strictly Elvis’ choice, though he welcomed suggestions from his musicians. There was surprisingly few special effects, and little emphasis on production values. Elvis was the show.

Sono indubbiamente di parte, ma, ogni volta che leggo qualcosa di suo, penso che si trattasse di una mente veramente interessante da cui ho un sacco da imparare. Sono realmente stupita di come parlasse dell’inaffidabilità delle immagini in un contesto in cui, ancora, tutto sommato, c’era in esse un certo grado di veridicità. Sono stupita di come inquadrasse lucidamente il giornalismo. Sono stupita di come trattasse tutto questo semplicemente esponendo la sua prospettiva che era sempre posta come tale. È un testo piccolo e non particolarmente approfondito, ma non per questo meno interessante. La frase che cito mi piace particolarmente perché è come vorrei che le persone esponessero i propri giudizi: come tali. Non c’è niente di sbagliato o assurdo nell’avere un’opinione, ma c’è, a mio avviso, qualcosa di profondamente malsano nel volerla confondere con il fatto. Il fatto è una cosa, il giudizio è un’altra. E non lo dico per delegittimare l’opinione, anzi, penso che di ogni opinione si possa discutere (a meno che non si pretenda che qualsiasi giudizio sia definitivo e immutabile), ma ritengo che inquadrarla come tale permetta al dibattito di farsi spazio dove altrimenti non lo avrebbe. Non lo so, magari è solo un’impressione personale, ma spesso mi pare si confondano le opinioni con la realtà fattuale e trovo che questo atteggiamento abbia una certa pericolosità nascosta che finiremo con il pagare cara.
