A year ago today, Anadith Danay Reyes Álvarez died under the custody of CBP. Read the full statement at @txcivilrights and @haitianbridge, parts of today's press release from our colleagues. Our solidarity! ❤️🖤🤍💛 "HARLINGEN, TX – Today, the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) and the Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit to obtain the medical records and other documents of Anadith Danay Reyes Álvarez, the 8-year-old girl who died while in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody last year. The filing comes on the one-year anniversary of Anadith’s passing on May 17, 2023. View the filing here. TCRP and HBA have represented the family in an investigation of her case. Throughout the investigation, the organizations have been met with roadblocks from CBP in accessing Anadith’s medical records. Despite numerous requests, CBP has refused to provide the organizations with records needed to assist the investigation. While CBP officials have tried to claim that Anadith was sickly and had prior health conditions, the facts are that when she was apprehended with her family on May 9, 2023, Anadith was healthy, and when she became sick in the detention facility, her mother’s repeated requests for appropriate medical care were rejected. Moments after being denied the ability to go to the hospital yet again, Anadith passed away in her mother’s arms while in the CBP facility on May 17, 2023. “Today, precisely on May 17, the one-year anniversary of Anadith’s passing is being observed. This year has not been easy for us - we have suffered, cried and missed our baby,” said Mabel Álvarez (she/her), Mother of Anadith. “The most painful thing is that the government has not wanted to provide us with any documents regarding Anadith, which has not been easy for us. We have fought a lot and we are still fighting. I ask the government to please help us access Anadith’s documents so that we can turn the page because it is very painful." #InvisibleNoMore #NoMoreStolenChildren #ChildrenAreSacred #Abiayala #IndigenousRights #forcedMigration #MayaNation #SaveAsylum #NoMoreStolenSisters #NoMoreStolenRelatives

Yesterday, May 5th was National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, 2 Spirit Peoples, and Relatives. On the ancestral lands of the Piscataway and Nacotchtank Peoples, under the blessing of rain, we placed our offerings to Mother Earth and to our relatives to honor and remember all our relatives who have been stolen from us.  The epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives has no borders and impacts us across Abiayala (Americas). Violence against our Peoples is closely related to the violence and discretion of Mother Earth. Justice across Abiayala for all our stolen relatives!  #MMIW #MMIP #MMIG #MMIWG2s+ #MMIR #Abiayala #IndigenousPeoples #IndignousRights Follow and support @rising_hearts @niwrc

This is a continuation to visibilize systemic violence that Indigenous Peoples’ across the Abiayala (the Americas) continue to face today. Our history shows a disproportionate experience of collective massacres and genocide. We will honor the memory of many families, whose names we will state out loud before the prayer run as a form of calling into our presence, their living memory. Our relatives who are murdered and go missing across multiple colonial borders and who have been brutalized, too many times their families are left with the financial burden of expensive investigative reports and funeral costs. All of this is on top of their grief for losing a loved one, often physically distant from the homelands of their loved ones. We stand for restitution of people to their families, as many have forced distances between them and missing family members, even in death. This separation is due to enslavement, trafficking, worker exploitation, and forced migration. #EARTHDAY 👉🏽🌎"We are in a crisis because we have caused this imbalance between humanity and Mother Earth.  There are so many wars, and bombs that explode on Mother Earth.  She has nothing to do with what is happening nor the ambition of those who take her beauty from her entrails through extraction and plundering of gold and silver and other minerals in different parts of the world. 👉🏽🌍There is inaction, indifference from governments that only think of themselves.  They do not think of humanity, Mother Earth, Mother Nature, and our intrinsic relationship with these sacred elements of life. They have not listened.  I want to ask you to work on our environment, global warming, climate change, the healing of Mother Earth. Who has caused this crisis and imbalance? Humanity and people's ambition.   👉🏽🌏I ask the leaders, do you know from your cultures and communities the messages that Mother Earth and Mother Nature are giving to you in the mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, deserts and all the environments? Go and give thanks to these sacred elements and for these sacred elements. This would be my message to those who are fighting in defense of Mother Earth, Mother Nature, and humanity. Do not just work from words.  Work from truly understanding the pain of Mother Earth and have this pain lead your actions."  - Nana Teresa, Maya Mam Elder Graphics by: J. Ciudad, Faro, Muralla 📸🖋🔥🌽👣🌶 ☠️ Un lugar caluroso e imponente. @lasertec.sv. . #nawal #IX #díadelalenguamaterna #mothertongue #díainternacionaldelalenguamaterna #discodeljaguar #jaguar #abuelajaguara #ancestros #ancestras #tekwani #tekwanchimal #muna #kuzkatan #elsalvador #medicineart #medicineartist #arte #indígena #type #typography #script #hieroglyphics #glyphs #tipografia #scribe #artvsartist

💖 Happy Valentine's Day from the International Mayan League! 💖 Love knows no bounds, and neither does language. This Valentine's Day, we celebrate the beauty and diversity of our Maya Peoples by sharing the phrase "We're all free to love" in 6 distinct Maya languages. But before we dive in, here are a few important points to remember: 1️⃣ Languages evolve and vary across regions. We've specified the variants of each language below to honor the diverse peoples we work with. 2️⃣ While we are showcasing these languages in written form, it's essential to recognize that for several reasons, not everyone within our communities may be able to read in their language. Finally, we dedicate this post to our trusted network of Maya interpreters who made this possible by upholding deep respect and ensuring accuracy for each language: Maya Mam (Huehuetenango, Santiago Chimaltenango) Maya Q’anjob’al (San Pedro Soloma, Huehuetenango) Maya Ixil (Nebaj, Quiche) Maya Kaqchikel (Barrio San Antonio, Solola, Solola) Maya Q’eqchi (Comunidad Primavera del Ixcãn, Ixcãn Quiché, Guatemala) Maya K’iche’ (De nebaj, Quiche y Aguacatan, Huehuetenango) Let's celebrate love in all its diversity and remember that love transcends language barriers, colonial borders, and gender identities. 💝 Comment below to let us know how you say “We’re all free to love” in your language! 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 🖥️Graphics by: @c0m0estas ✏️Editors: @ernesto_natanael_ @c0m0estas @lobrady3 and Manuela V. #IndigenousLove #Libertad #Orgullo #Encuentro #DiversidadesSexualesIndígenas #Abiayala #DerechosIndígenas #PueblosVivos #MigraciónIndígena #AmoresAmor #AmorIndígena #IndigenousLove #LoveIsLove #IndigenousSexualDiversity #IndigenousPeoples #IndigenousPride

In 2016, with the encroachment of the Dakota Access Pipeline, our North Native relatives of the The Standing Rock Sioux, Yankton Sioux, Oglala Sioux, and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribes all opposed the Dakota Access Pipelines. Water is life, water is our first medicine, she is the blood of Mother Earth and this call for solidarity reached the Maya Nation. Maya Elders and Ancestral Authorities joined in solidarity with our North Native relatives on the sacred lands and waters of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation. And today, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Oglala Sioux Tribe and to President Frank Star Comes Out for their unwavering solidarity with those facing forced migration at the Southern border. Many who are forced to seek asylum because of transnational corporations and thefts of our lands, are Indigenous Peoples, not Latine or Hispanic. President Star Comes Out’s recent statement exemplifies a commitment to justice, human dignity, and understanding. His statement reflects our shared story of colonial borders forced on Indigenous lands. Rejecting Governor Nom’s statements, the Oglala Sioux Tribe asserted their sovereignty and self-determination, stating that they are neither Democratic nor Republican. They also recognized that many people coming across the Southern border are Indigenous peoples. We thank our North Native relatives who have stood with us. We thank the Elders, Medicine People, Tribal Leaders, and youth who have denounced colonial borders and have stood with Indigenous peoples in forced migration. As we have said before, we are not Invaders in our own Lands across Abiayala! • • • • • • • • • • • • #foto #fotografia #fotografía #fotohistoria #fotohistorias #relatos #fotorelatos #semaforo #semáforo #cancunmexico🇲🇽 #cancún #calle #callejero #mexico #quintanaroo #bohemios #gentedelacalle #buscarselavida #ganarseelpan #chambear #situaciondecalle #callejear #vivir #latinoamérica #abiayala #latinoamericaunida #PatriaGrande #mexico

Any moment now, we will know the verdict of our dear brother Carlos Ernesto Choc! We have stood in solidarity with Carlos Choc, Maya Q’eqchi’ Journalist since last year, but for the last two days, we have been raising awareness surrounding Carlos’ case. We have emphasized that the injustices he’s faced for the past 7 years have been due to him simply investigating, documenting, and telling the truth. (See our last two posts for more details) Please continue to share our content and raise awareness surrounding Carlos’ case and stay tuned as we continue to share updates in real time! #mayancommunitiyjournalism #freedomforCarlosChoc #pressfreedom #ajournalistisnotacriminal #journalismisnotacrime #IndigenousRights #IndigenousPeoples #Abiayala #Iximulew 📹: Carlos Choc, Juanita C. This post was made in collaboration with @mayanleague How will Indigenous Peoples and communities be affected by these proposed immigration policies? 1️⃣Raising the threshold to meet the credible fear interview (CFI) standard, will lead to the following human rights violations: Widespread denial of Indigenous Peoples’ basic right to identify as an Indigenous person, their Tribal affiliation and or membership or citizenship to a particular Indigenous Nation; Erroneous misclassification as Latino/Hispanic; Indigenous language exclusion hindering due process rights; Increased expedited removal of Indigenous asylum seekers due to an inability to communicate in Spanish or English and prove credible fear. 2️⃣Nationwide expedited removal targeting undocumented people will continue to create fear, accelerate racial profiling and criminalization of immigrant communities, separate families, and rip apart the fabric of refugee and immigrant communities. 3️⃣Any policy resembling Title 42 expulsions or an asylum transit ban will be disastrous. Forcing Indigenous Peoples to seek refuge and apply for asylum in the very countries that systematically persecute them, is a death sentence. We need your help! 📞Call your State Rep and tell them to #SaveAsylum! 🔗Link to call in our bio! 📸Photos by Jose Francisco Sanchez Ramirez 🖥️Graphic by @c0m0estas ✍🏼Text by Lucero Gonzalez (Maya Q’anjob’al), @lobrady3, Juanita C. 🕊️On this sacred day of 12 Kan, the energy of the cycles of time, authority, justice, and truth, we reflect on December 29, 1996. 27 years ago, the people of Iximulew rejoiced with the signing of The Accord for Firm and Lasting Peace (Peace Accords). Nana Teresa, Maya Mam Elder, and founding member of the Mayan League shares the dream of peace and recognition for our cultures. Yet, our reality reveals a different story – transnational corporations continue to exploit, impunity persists, and forced evictions continue. 🌎 To this day, the Peace Accords remain unfulfilled, and Indigenous peoples across Iximulew are still treated as invaders on their lands. Thousands flee ancestral lands, facing persecution and violence. Despite this, we see a dream that has not materialized for the victims of the war and genocide and we have not lost hope. This hope is reflected in our work and actions for and with our people and communities. But we need your help to end injustice and impunity. 🌱 Join us in our quest for justice! We're halfway to our $750 monthly goal by Dec 31. Your generosity helps plant seeds of change. Click the link in our bio to become a monthly donor and support a tomorrow of joy and possibility for Mother Earth and future generations. 👉🏽Context of Photo on slide 4: Photo of the Nimlajacoc Monument, Cobán, Alta Verapaz honoring 916 Maya Q'eqchi' victims of the internal armed conflict in Guatemala. #MonthlyDonations #MonthlySustainerProgram #IndigenousResistance #IndigenousSovereignty #DonateNow #Guatemala #Iximulew #MayaNation #IndigenousMigration #IndigenousRights #IndigenousLanguageRights #Abiayala

As we come upon the 5th anniversary of the death of Felipe Gómez Alonzo (Maya Chuj Nation, 8 years old), two more children have died in detention centers in Chicago and New York. Our hearts are heavy, but our will to continue fighting for justice for ALL children will not waver. We call on the Biden Administration to safeguard the right to asylum and stop any return to extremist deterrence policies that kill our children. At the International Mayan League, we work at the intersection of advocacy and direct community support - linking our communities' realities to Indigenous-led solutions and we need your help to do it. Join us in defending Indigenous Sovereignty across colonial borders and help us get to our goal of obtaining $750 in monthly donations before December 31st!
