Over the weekend I saw what was probably the longest Northern Ring-necked Snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsii) I had ever seen - and I’ve seen a lot of ‘em. It’s hard to tell in the video and pics I’m posting, but this individual had to be around 24 inches in length (or 20 inches at the very least). In the video/photos, it may look like I’m holding 2 or 3 Ringnecks - as opposed to just 1. Over the weekend, I found what was probably one of the most unique looking Eastern Garters (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) I had ever seen. When I flipped the rock and saw this little juvenile, I thought nice, I rarely ever see DeKay’s Browns in the mountains. But after a few seconds, I realized that this cute little critter was actually a Garter. I’ve seen others with similar tannish/brownish colors (especially in the MD & WV mountains), but I don’t think I’ve seen ‘em without any of the black colors that can be seen in at least some of the scales (even if only a little). Point being, even though there are definitely scientific reasons & explanations for some of these color variations, I guess they just don’t make Garters in other places like they do in the mountains!
