Postcards from the #Catskills 1. Somehow, seeing the bear was the clincher - small, black and loping, viewed from the passenger seat, moving across the road, wood to wood. 2. Stars in panoramic view. I wake, try to will myself into a dark upset of pulsing luminescence. But my legs are tired, uncooperative from the day’s hike. I gather the last of the tiny lights into my closing eyes, into my dreams. 3. The dust of ancestry tacks to your heels as you walk into town. Cities are built on capital and bedrock, buildings intractable. In the mountains things shiftshape — blow around. Something loose and malleable may land at your feet, something to be reimagined. Night Motel A body makes an impression in a bed of leaves. Along the garden wall a loveseat from a flattened bush. Nearby the usual beer bottles plus food, utensils and other debris, leftovers of men who eat out. Sometimes I talk out loud with disapproval as I gather their things, those men who disappear at sunrise and I do not know—- but I cannot look away. On cold days I have thought to leave that slab of cardboard just as it is, face down, slightly slanted by a recent wind, and so too the jacket which hangs heavy on the branch of a young tree, even as the temperature rises.
