Continuing the @this_is_real_wrestling Top 25 Wrestlers of the 70’s List with the man at number 18; Blackjack Mulligan. At 6’7”, 333 pounds Mulligan was one of the biggest (literally and figuratively) stars of the 1970’s. Bob Windham had started his Professional Wrestling career in 1967. He was trained first by Joe Blanchard in Corpus Christi, TX and was later trained by Verne Gagne in the AWA. He had good success under his real name in the U.S. and Japan as a tough cowboy gimmick, but it was in 1971 that things took a big turn for him. In 71 he made his way to Vince McMahon Sr.’s WWWF. McMahon gave him the gimmick of Blackjack Mulligan; a heel cowboy with a handlebar mustache, dressed all in black complete with a black fingerless glove on his massive right hand. McMahon gave him his name, his look and his dreaded finishing hold; the Claw. He became the WWWF’s biggest monster heel at the time and was soon the number one contender for Pedro Morales’ World Heavyweight Championship. It was during one of his title shots at the Boston Garden when Blackjack was viciously slashed hip to knee by an outraged fan. The wound required hundreds of stitches and caused a serious loss of blood. After taking time off to recover he headed to the Midwest and teamed with the 6’5”, 255 pound Jack Lanza…now Blackjack Lanza as “The Blackjacks”. The two had great success winning several tag team titles in the various territories of the NWA. In 1975 the Blackjacks made their way back to the WWWF where they defeated Dominic DeNucci and Pat Barrett on August 26, 1975 for the World Tag Team Championship. They held the belts for three months before losing them to Tony Parisi and Louis Cerdan. In 76 the two went separate ways with Lanza going to the AWA and Mulligan to the NWA’s Mid Atlantic territory where he had tremendous success winning the United States Championship on 3 occasions and holding the title a total of 509 days. He and tag team partner Ric Flair won the Mid Atlantic version of the NWA World Tag Team Championship in August of 1979. Still can’t believe he’s no longer with us. I literally jumped when i read the headline of his passing on my phone. He was the most creative one of the roster. He also became my favourite throughout the years because when the pandemic hit my interest for wrestling was at an all time low and despite that he was the only one i kept following on a weekly basis. I just couldn’t miss what he was doing. When he returned in late 2019 his return combined with the Bloodline storyline brought my interest back. Just want to touch on this rapidly! I see a lot of people requesting for Bray Wyatt to be inducted in the 2024 WWE Hall of Fame. It’s very understandable if it doesn’t happen this year. His family would want to be apart of the induction naturally however his passing was so unexpected and recent you got to respect that they are still grieving. It’s a process. At 6’6, 300 lbs, Blackjack Mulligan trained with Joe Blanchard in Corpus Christi, Texas and later with Verne Gagne and became a professional wrestler in the American Wrestling Association. Billed as being 6 foot 9 inches and over 300 pounds, Windham was a raw-boned cowboy in the vein of Bobby Duncum or Stan Hansen. In 1971, Mulligan joined the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) where he was transformed into “Blackjack Mulligan”. Mulligan donned black trunks, black hat, a black fingerless glove, moustache and used the iron claw submission hold. Mulligan participated in a Madison Square Garden match against Bruno Sammartino, who was making his first appearance at the arena since the end of his nearly eight-year championship reign. Mulligan attacked Sammartino before the bell. Sammartino quickly recovered, slammed Mulligan twice and pinned him in 64 seconds. In wrestling terms, everybody “got over” – the building was sold out to the delight of promoter Vincent J. McMahon, Sammartino made a strong return to New York and Mulligan, who was in no condition to work an actual match, received a large pay-off to aid his recovery. Once he healed, Mulligan returned to the Midwest and tagged with Blackjack Lanza to form the Blackjacks. @bigjohnstuddofficialwwe holds the legs of the Super Machine as King Kong Bundy drops a Big Splash! The feud between the Machines and the Heenan Family was a very entertaining part of 1986. The machines were Super Machine (Bill Eadie), Big Machine (Blackjack Mulligan) and Giant Machine (Andre the Giant). Andre was not in the best of shape during this period so the majority of the in-ring work was done by the 6’3”, 291 pound Eadie and the 6’7” 333 pound Mulligan. Later there would be guys like Hulk Machine, Piper Machine and others, but the best matches were the ones between Super Machine/Big Machine and Bundy/Studd. That’s my opinion anyway. Eadie, who was usually the bigger man in most of his matches had no problem selling and bumping for his giant opponents, yet was big and strong enough to mount very believable offensive against them. Not to mention the fact that he was the most agile and athletic man in their matches. Mulligan was nearly as massive as Studd and was able to go toe to toe and blow for blow with either Bundy or Studd. There are a number of gigantic human beings who I will be leaving out of the @this_is_real_wrestling Top 35 World Heavyweight Champions NEVER List. Now, all of these guys could have been given World Championship runs, but if I’m the booker I would tend to use one of Vince McMahon Sr.’s concepts of using certain types as “attractions” rather than World Champions. I had initially put these men’s names down on a preliminary list but decided not to include them. These men are: Gorilla Monsoon (billed as 6’6”, 401-440 pounds), Ernie Ladd (a legitimate 6’9”, 315-325 pounds), Blackjack Mulligan (billed as 6’7”-6’9”, 333-350 pounds), Big John Studd (billed as 6’10”, 364 pounds) and King Kong Bundy (billed as 6’5”, 444-470 pounds). I would use these men as attractions for folks to gawk at usually squashing middle card wrestlers, defeating Top contenders and coming close to defeating longtime Champions with both winners and losers being able to look strong and keep their heat. While the 90’s saw the likes of Diesel, Big Van Vader, Yokozuna, The Undertaker, Sycho Sid and the Giant/Big Show becoming World Heavyweight Champions, I would argue that truly only in Vader & Yoko’s cases were these reigns mutually beneficial to both wrestlers and wrestling companies. Not that Taker being Champion ever hurt the WWF, but it wasn’t needed. I would tend to use giants as a separate attraction from the World Heavyweight Champion in all but the rarest of cases. January 17, 1970: A match between The Vachon Brothers and Edouard Carpentier and Bruce Kirk on AWA TV devolves into utter chaos as The Crusher runs in to make the save. Crusher runs Vachon into the post and, boy does Vachon hit a gusher! The bloody scene was so intense that WTCN nearly cancelled wrestling after seeing Vachon bleed all over the TV studio. A few more fun facts: A greenhorn known as “Buddy Smith” also runs in to try make the save. He was also known as Dale Hey, and would later be known as Hollywood Blond/Freedbird Buddy Roberts. Bruce Kirk would later be known as Frank Monte, half of the Alaskans with Mike York. After feuding intensely with André the Giant for more than a year, Bobby Heenan’s Heenan Family challenged André and a partner of his choice to face King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd in a tag team match on April 26, 1986. When André did not show and was replaced by Ted Arcidi, Bobby Heenan launched a campaign to get him suspended from the WWF. After deliberating on the matter, WWF President Jack Tunney was forced to suspend him for missing the tag team match and subsequent matches against the Heenan Family. Less than two months after the suspension was announced, vignettes appeared on WWF Television hailing the debut of a masked tag team from the Orient, known as ”The Machines”: Giant Machine and Super Machine. The team announced that they were coming to America soon with their manager Lou Albano and that their only mission was to prove that they were the number one tag team in the world. Super Machine was portrayed by Bill Eadie; his ring name was a play on his previous gimmick, “Masked Superstar”. Though it was clear that Giant Machine was none other than André the Giant, commentators implied that it may be Giant Baba and not André under the mask. On August 5 (shown August 23), The Machines made their WWF debut with Super Machine wrestling in a singles match while Albano and Giant Machine were at ringside. Later that night, Bobby Heenan sneaked around at ringside taking pictures of the Giant Machine to try to prove his true identity. One week later, Albano introduced a third Machine to the WWF: Big Machine, who was played by Blackjack Mulligan. Blackjack was so big he sorta had to be paired against another big man in order for it to be a believable opponent. Like I said in a previous post today, I watched a Mulligan vs. Backlund (6’1”, 234 pounds) from 1982 last night. It was difficult to buy the Bob presented much of a threat to Mulligan. But…this is pro wrestling, after all…one must learn to suspend one’s disbelief. Another big (literally) opponent of Blackjack’s was the 6’8.5” 325-330 pound @bigjohnstuddofficialwwe. Talk about “picking on someone your size”…Mulligan and Studd took that saying to heart. Other than a few sparse moments of seeing the Big Machine in the ring at the same time as Studd I have never had the pleasure of seeing a Mulligan vs. Studd match though I know they happened. The legendary Blackjack Mulligan held many titles, both singles and tag team, during his over 2 decades as an active in-ring performer. In his peak years (1971-87) he was one of the largest men in pro wrestling. Billed as 6’9” (most likely around 6’7”) he weighed 300-350 pounds during that time. I just watched a match last night between him and Bob Backlund for the WWF World Title from 1982. He was billed as 333 pounds and was probably at his best. He was HUGE with arms the size of most people’s legs and he was in good physical shape in that he moved very well for his size…moved much better than he did a few years later in the mid 80’s at 350 during and post his time as Big Machine. Some of that might have been the added weight, but most likely it had to do with wear and tear his big body had accumulated over the years. Well, this post was supposed to be about how Blackjack was a 4X NWA United States Champion and how I was going to be starting work on the @this_is_real_wrestling Top 20 NWA Secondary Title Champions List (1970-1990). There are tons of secondary titles in the history of the NWA. And it’s complicated because many of the major territories separated from the NWA in the mid 1980’s with titles like WCCW’s NWA American Heavyweight Championship becoming the WCWA World Heavyweight Championship and Mid-South Wrestling’s NWA North American Heavyweight Championship becoming the UWF World Heavyweight Championship. Also the prestigious NWA National Heavyweight Championship was swallowed up by the NWA United States Championship when Jim Crockett purchased Georgia Championship Wrestling and merged it with his Mid-Atlantic Wrestling in Jim Crockett Promotions. There were other once major titles like the Missouri State Championship and the Southern Heavyweight Championship (just to name a couple) taking a very distant back seat to JCP’s US Championship and World Television Championship. To most of the country, JCP had in fact become the NWA. So I’m torn. I’m not sure how to structure this list as yet. I’ll give it some thought. The 6’7” 333 pound Blackjack Mulligan was one of the greatest Big Men of the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was definitely one of my favorite monster heels when I was young. He was the 2nd man I ever saw body slam Andre the Giant. I saw @hulkhogan slam Andre first in 1980, and I saw Mulligan do it in 1982. Others have done it like Harley Race, Bill Eadie @searchanddestroyyou as the Masked Superstar,El Canek, Kamala and a few others, but Hulk and Blackjack were the first two I ever saw do it, as I lived in the Northeast and grew up watching the WWF. The only men who I ever thought looked like worthy opponents for a prime Andre (1984 and earlier) were “The Big Cat” Ernie Ladd (6’9” 320 pounds), Hulk Hogan (6’7”, 321), Big John Studd (6’8” 346) and the man pictured above. Blackjack Mulligan is the only man of the four Andre opponents I’ve mentioned who I know had multiple actual fist fights with Andre outside of the ring. Known as one of the strongest and toughest men in wrestling history, Mulligan backed down from no man and no giant. Despite their occasional brawls the two men respected each other tremendously and trusted each other with their bodies and lives in the ring. Andre would not make the call, “Slam, boss!” if he didn’t respect you.
