Continuing the Top 25 Wrestlers of the 70’s with the man at number 23; The Sheik (Ed Farhat). Farhat began his career way back in 1947 and wrestled through mid 1995, but he was truly at his peak from about 1965-1980. He promoted his own territory, Big Time Wrestling, in Detroit, Michigan while also booking for Frank Tunney’s Maple Leaf Wrestling in Toronto all the while being a major star not just in those territories but also in other territories of the NWA and in Vince McMahon’s WWWF. The Sheik was a madman heel gimmick who used foreign objects and even threw fireballs. He was a huge draw wherever he went as he always created a near riot every time he wrestled. His matches against WWWF Champions Bruno Sammartino and Pedro Morales sold out big houses like the Boston Garden and the Philadelphia Spectrum. He drew many sold out crowds in Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens against the likes of Bruno, Ernie Ladd, Edouard Carpentier, Johnny Valentine and many others. He also became a legend in Japan during the 70’s making tours in JWA, NJPW and most famously in AJPW where he had wild feuds with men like Abdullah the Butcher and the Funk Brothers. During his career he held the Detroit version of the NWA United States Championship 12 times among other prestigious titles throughout multiple territories. We are featuring a ring worn “Gladiator” singlet from Ron’s time in the WWF portraying the Faarooq Asad character! The gimmick only lasted about three months (from late Jul 1996 to early Nov 1996) - but believe it or not, in that short time there were three different versions of this singlet, but all looked very similar: *The first singlet had short light blue shoulder pieces along the outer straps of the singlet. The emblem on the “belt” was silver to match the first silver helmet. *The second singlet (featured here today) did not have the light blue shoulder pieces - and the emblem on the “belt” was blue - matching the second helmet which was also blue. *The third singlet was pretty much identical to the second with a blue emblem - but had black trim on the pieces of fabric that made up the skirt on the singlet. Again, this is the second singlet - which debuted at the WWF SummerSlam 1996 PPV in August, in which Faarooq was to wrestle Ahmed Johnson for the Intercontinental Championship. However, with Ahmed (the walking injury) becoming injured (again) - Faarooq appeared on the PPV only doing an in-ring interview. He would wear this singlet several other times thereafter, on Monday Night Raw and Superstars tapings - including his matches in the Intercontinental Championship Tournament! As silly as the character and outfit were - I really love the way it displays and appreciate how much effort went into making the piece. The “belt” and skirt are sewn onto the singlet to make it all one piece. I only wish I had one of the helmets to pair with it. 😢 Ron Simmons broke barriers for many. It was not always easy, but Simmons eventually became one of the most respected competitors in the sport. Despite its goofy origins - I am humbled to have a piece from the career of such a legendary competitor like Ron in my collection. It is not my only Ron Simmons piece. I also featured a pair of his tights that were used in the WWF while a part of the Acolytes tag team in an earlier post in the feed that is worth checking out as well!
