T H R O W B A C K 🕗We’re winding the clock back far enough fashion has come full circle. Welcome to uni life - 1990 edition. Up for debate in this issue of “Mitchell” was town vs campus living. 🏫 Physical Education student Julie Taylor’s epic room in Allen House (pic 1) with 10 meals per week for $109.50 sounds pretty good to us! “I wouldn’t give up my time in the dorm for anything - it’s great. You get to know everyone so well it’s just like living with your family,” says Julie. 🏡 Communications students Michael Reid, Andrew Hunter and Dave Davenport (pic 2) loved their 3 bedroom house in Georges Plains that set them back $140 p/w. “We all grew up in Sydney so this is a great opportunity to get a feel for the country. There’s lots of space and we can play our music really loud without bothering the neighbours!” laughs Dave. 🏫 Communications student Ashley Hay (pic 3) had it all sorted in The Diggings. Cooking her own meals in a communal kitchen with board costing her $97.20 p/w. “You don’t have to worry about bills, cleaning and mowing the lawn. You can also sleep in until the last minute, grab a shower and still make it to a 9am class!” 🏠 Theatre Media, business and communication students Tim Crackenthorpe, Alicia Newman, Andrew Laing, Tracey Hannaford and Paul Sheridan shared a lovely central 4 bedroom house in town for $160 p/w (pics 4 and 5). “We only pay $40 each a week for rent, put in $5 a week for gas and electricity, and we eat really well for $25 a week. 🎓 “At no point over the past two years have I doubted my decision to study physiotherapy. The more I learn about being a physiotherapist, the more I realise what a great career it will be!” Meet Lauren 👋 A teacher-turned-physiotherapist, single mum Lauren shares her career change story and how she juggles life, kids and study. Over to you, Lauren 👇 “Growing up in the small and tight-knit community of Gulgong on Wiradjuri Country, my two siblings and I spent our childhood riding bikes, swimming and outdoors on the family property with our friends. 👩🏫 “Once I finished high school, I completed a Bachelor of Human Movement/Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) at Charles Sturt in Bathurst. After graduating, I moved to the big smoke, Sydney, where I taught PDHPE in Mr Druitt for 10 years.” After having her two daughters 👩👧👧 she returned home to raise her family on country soil. By this stage, Lauren had worked as a teacher for 15 years, and decided it was time for a career change, which she admits was a huge decision. “I was always interested in physiotherapy, and it was an obvious choice once I decided to explore options outside of high school teaching. “The chance to work meaningfully with individual clients to improve their health and wellbeing appeals to me. “I am also a single Mum juggling study, work and a busy family life so studying looks and feels a little different the second time around.” Lauren admits that when she started her course, she didn’t fully understand the diverse career opportunities available at the completion of her degree. “I would like to gain employment as a physiotherapist in Orange. Artefact is proud to offer its support to the upcoming Dhuluny Conference in mid-August 2024. The conference is part of commemorations marking 200 Years of Wiradyuri Resistance from 1824 to 2024. On the 14th of August 1824, Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane declared martial law in the region - the first use in NSW of martial law against Aboriginal people. “As one of the co-organisers of this important event, I’d encourage you to mark this in your diary. What happened in Bathurst on 14 August 1824 led to an unprecedented escalation of violence in Australian Frontier War history. The consequences to Wiradyuri people in particular in the Bathurst region were widespread and devastating, and it is critical that we reflect on these shared histories that have been too often and for too long ignored,’ says Dr Stephen Gapps (Artefact historian, Dhuluny Conference co-organiser and Adjunct Lecturer at Charles Sturt University). Dhuluny is a Wiradyuri word that means ‘truth and that which is direct’. A series of community events from the 14th to 17th of August will focus on truth-telling and the legacies of the events of 1824. The Dhuluny Conference (hosted by Charles Sturt University) is currently seeking expressions of interest from those interested in presenting at the event – including artists, dancers, storytellers, military lawyers, legal historians, interdisciplinary academics, and research students.
