Returning to Britain between his tenure, he was widely accused of corruption. He later died with a fortune of over £30 million in today’s money. At the top of Clive Steps is #KingCharlesStreet, flanked by two important government buildings. ❝Cross #Whitehall to stand in front of Horse Guards, a white stone building flanked by two soldiers on horseback. These are members of #theHouseholdCavalry, regiments of the British Army. Horse Guards was designed by #WilliamKent in the 1740s as the Horse Guards’ headquarters. Today it contains some preserved historic rooms as well as the Household Cavalry Museum. Before you pass through the archway of the building, look up at the golden clock against the white stone cupola of the building and you will notice a dark stain at around 2pm. It is said that this is a permanent mark to remember the execution of #KingCharlesI - a great story, although there is no evidence to back it up! As you walk underneath, look up at the underside of the vaulted stone ceiling. You will see two collections of initials, SFM and St MW. These are parish boundary markers: to the left is the parish of #SaintMartinintheFields and to the right, of #SaintMargaret Westminster. ❝Turn left along #HorseGuardsAvenue to reach #Whitehall and another reminder of the former palace. As well as the steps you have just seen, #BanquetingHouse was the only major building to escape the fire and can still be visited today. It contains the world’s only surviving in-situ ceiling paintings by #PeterPaulRubens. Installed in 1639 these staggering works celebrate the reign of the #StuartKing #JamesI (r. 1603-25; #JamesVIofScotland from 1567) and his belief in the divine right of kings. Above the entrance to Banqueting House you can see a bust of his son #CharlesI (r. 1625-49); somewhat morbid, as this was the location for his beheading. His execution followed years of fighting between Royalists, loyal to the king, and #OliverCromwell’s #ParliamentaryArmy. The #EnglishCivilWar (1642-51) was a last resort after the king and Parliament failed to agree on contentious issues that included religion, the king’s power and his economic policies. On 30 January 1649, the king was led from Banqueting House onto a scaffold to face a crowd of spectators. ❝Cross the road to continue through #VictoriaEmbankmentGardens. The gardens contain several war memorials, a fitting location given that the fortress-like stone building on the left is the #MinistryofDefence. Walk towards the far side of the building, however, and you will see something far older embedded in grass: a series of stone steps leading to nowhere. These are #QueenMarysSteps, a reminder of #WhitehallPalace that once stood along the bank of #theThames, roughly between the Palace of Westminster and #TrafalgarSquare. A jumble of buildings, Whitehall Palace served as the centre of English royal power from 1530 until 1698, and was probably the largest palace in Europe at the time. So, what happened in 1698? Another fire. This time started by a maidservant who was drying linen sheets too close to a charcoal brazier in a bed chamber. The steps you see here were built as a convenient river entrance to the palace for #QueenMaryII (r. 1689-94) in 1691. You will notice that, today, they seem a rather inconvenient distance from the Thames. This is thanks to the late-19th-century construction of London’s sewer system, masterminded by #JosephBazalgette. Beneath your feet run brick tunnels carrying sewage alongside the Tube tunnels of the District and Circle lines. Standing in this location since 1902, the statue celebrates #Boudicca as a fearless leader who led a revolt against the invading Romans around 60 AD, burning London and other cities to the ground in the process. ❝Sandwich was built on a sandbank in order to serve ships sheltering in the wide haven which then existed between it and the #IsleofThanet. At first the supply of pure water must have proved a problem as water from wells in the town has always been brackish. So, very early on, a stone-lined channel was dug to bring water into the town from springs near Worth. This stream still flows through Sandwich and may most easily be seen on the east side of New Street and the Dover Road near the railway station. It flows along New Street where it disappears under houses and reappears at the rear of the shop at the beginning of #DelfStreet where an old pump may still be seen. it is seen again along Delf Street where it is diverted at Horse Pond Sluice. The stream is known to have existed as early as the reign of Edward I. An old lease in the possession of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury shows that the stream was in existence as early as 1206. ❝This fine house has a datestone of 1713 on the street front and indeed the front windows and brickwork date from then. However, the main house is a timber-framed one, dating from about 1400. It belonged to #ChristchurchCanterbury, on whose land, the Jesus Quay, it stands and it is believed to have been the principal guest house for the accommodation of pilgrims to Canterbury. It is in reality a double house as the roof shows, one half once having the great hall and also the kitchen, both open to the roof, while the eastern half was the dormitory wing on three floors. The present main doorway is believed to have been added for the visit of #HenryVIlI in 1534, as it has brickwork of that period adjoining it and also a Tudor royal coat of arms in one spandrel. The stairs just inside and also the main central fireplace are part of this alteration. The roof of the hall with its carved crown Post still survives, also the roof of the kitchen with its massive and soot covered timbers. ❝Your last stop on this walk is something of an enigma, and hard to spot unless you know what you are looking for. Cross over towards the black-tiled building at no. 4 #GreatNewportStreet. Look closely at the facade, and you will see a hook labelled ‘ #MetropolitanPolice’. As so often with London stories, it is very hard to wheedle out the truth of oddities such as this, but you may read that this was a hook used by policemen in the early 20th century for hanging up their coats in hot weather while directing traffic. Whatever the reason, this is a delightful curiosity to admire as you walk by.
