4/28 is here, and we’re adding to our collection of big block-themed posts with a look at the “135 Series” Mustangs, a group of 50 factory drag-racing cars built to introduce Ford’s new 428ci Cobra Jet V8 to the public. Approximately half of the cars are known to remain—and none have been with their owners longer than car #37, belonging to Vinny Lyons (pictured here). Vinny was turning wrenches at Rye Ford when a transport parked itself outside of the garage bays with a brand new, shiny Mustang in tow. Since he doubled as the driver for the dealership’s drag racing program, he and colleague Benny Kaufman prepared the car with a three-point roll bar, traction bars, a scatter shield, and revised rear-end gearing. Vinny traveled up and down the East Coast and raced the Cobra Jet from “Connecticut Dragway to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Dover Dragstrip to Englishtown” for the 1968 season. After all was said and done, there was no separating the car and its driver; Vinny had the right of first refusal on the Cobra Jet Mustang, and purchased it from Rye Ford in April 1969 for the mighty sum of $3,605 (a little over $31,000 in today’s dollars). It came complete with drag slicks, an open exhaust, and a two-year warranty, which proved fruitful when he hurt the motor that year while running a best 11.2 ET at 118 mph in the Super Stock E class. Fifty-five years later, Vinny still owns the car. A faithful repaint was performed in 1998, and like many racing cars, its original engine has been swapped out. It now runs a 427 stroked and poked to 491 cubic inches and drinking 112-octane race fuel. We’re thankful that his kids’ college tuition didn’t call for Vinny to sell it on. He happily continues to be the sole caretaker of this CJ Mustang—showing it off to the public at events along the East Coast and throughout the Rust Belt, with the occasional exhibition run thrown in. We found him last summer at a local show out in rural Perry, New York. So keep an eye out—Vinny and his Cobra Jet are still making the rounds. Incoming Las Vegas photos! The past couple weeks in Las Vegas were absolutely killer. From going rounds at the National and Divisional events, to winning the FS/A class trophy in the finals against teammate @melaniee_cox.
