“The Hot New Spirit of Dodge.” This was wild to find! It’s a 1990 Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo finished in Flash Red Clear Coat over a light grey cloth interior. I’m so stunned I found one just sitting in my area! The Daytona came out in 1984 and like every other mopar offering at the time, was based on the K platform. They were sold with a sister car, the Chrysler Laser, and featured a prominent wedge design to evoke the sporty characteristics of the car. Many different engines were offered including a 3 liter Mitsubishi V6 but in the high performance Shelby, it featured a 2.2 liter Turbo II i4 making 174hp (for this MY). 1987 saw the shift away from the sealed beam headlights towards the awesome looking pop up units which were changed back to flush mounted composite units in 1992. They never sold amazingly well because they were still fwd which was seen as undesirable by buyers. In 1990 for example, they only sold 38k units total. This example stayed in Wisconsin at least since 1993. It’s certainly lived a full life and I’m so happy I saw one in person! WINGED WARRIOR! 1969 DODGE CHARGER DAYTONA! SELLING AT MECUM INDY! In 1969 Dodge built the high wing Daytona for the sole purpose of winning NASCAR races. In its first race at the Talladega 500 they did exactly that! The Daytona was also the first car in NASCAR history to break 200 MPH! Immediately recognizable by its distinctive 23-inch-tall wing and the unique nose cone, Dodge used both the 426 CI V-8 HEMI rated at 426 HP and the 440 CI Magnum rated at 375 HP. Dodge only built 503 Daytona’s in 1969 (the only year of production). The Daytona seen here is equipped with a matching numbers 440 Magnum mated to a four-speed manual transmission with a wood knob Hurst shifter, and is optioned with power steering, power brakes, and a A33 Track Pak rear with 3.55 gears. Paint is Hemi Orange over a White vinyl bucket seats with a distinctive White wing. The famous “wing” stood 23 inches tall and was adjustable. It also has a factory AM radio with rear speaker. This Daytona comes with a copy of the original broadcast sheet and a reproduction window sticker. Mecum Auctions will be offering this Dodge at their Indy sale in May.
