Tomorrow is the second to last Saturday for @ekbakery 2023 in which the pocket-size bakery in the former Meringue Girls space on Broadway Market lifts its shutters and opens its counter to the public, before Christmas. And if this @manilife Deep Roast Peanut Butter & White Chocolate Cookie is anything to go by, you’re not going to want to miss out. Whilst this exact cookie was part of last weekend’s @manilife pop-up so isn’t on this week’s menu, it’s fair to say @ekbakery - best known for brownies and cakes - is a master of cookies, with a Milk Chocolate & Sea Salt, or Double Chocolate Cookie on the menu (and an absolute steal at just £2!). Plus Snowflake Gingerbread Biscuits all wrapped up for Christmas The Mince Pie Blondie, Baileys Caramel Brownie and Malted Chocolate Tiffin are also available and all went down an absolute treat with my Bun Runners (and that Baileys Caramel is available by the jar too!) In short, don’t sleep on the chance to try this festive menu. The brownies and cookies all have a pretty long shelf-life and freeze brilliantly too if you want to save them for Christmas itself. For Meghna's first birthday cake, there were no cartoon characters, unicorns, fairies or the like. Not that I have anything against them as such. If she wants her cake to be decorated that way when she's older, we'll order or make something along those lines. But since she doesn't have any cake-related preferences at this age, I wanted to celebrate her, and us, in a simple, elegant way. I was introduced to @ekbakery's amazing cakes and brownies by @theurbankitchen and @whywasteannualleave a few years ago and knew they'd create something special for my little lady. With so many incredible flavours available, it was tough to pick just one cake. In the end, Chocolate Sesame won because I'm always tempted by tahini (and even more so when it's in meringue buttercream form). It turns out that I'm not the only one who loves this combo - it was a huge hit with our guests. Too often, celebration cakes are dry and sickly sweet in my experience as the appearance trumps taste. However, this stunner was soft, with subtle sweetness and richness, making it dangerously moreish. If your mouth is watering now, the good news is that EKB just announced they'll be moving to a new site in East London where you can buy their brownies and cakes by the slice. A glow up 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ A few years ago we were asked by our corporate clients for some #pridemonth specials. How were we gonna tailor our menu to bring the fun & celebration to their events but keep it to the ekb brand? No rainbow cakes allowed at the door ❌ And alsoooo you can’t just slap a rainbow flag on it and say you’re done. At a bare minimum, we had to make sure that the cakes were having some positive impact for #pride. Other than feeding your bellies 💋 So, our menu : Celebration Cakes & Boxes of Little Cakes decorated with a rainbow of fruits & edible flowers Brownies covered with heart shape rainbow sprinkles A donation from every bite of cake donated to @aktcharity. Italians, close your eyes and ears Another cake from our all-year-round menu. This flavour is inspired by my mum’s tiramisu. Growing up it was my favourite pud and I adored having leftovers for breakfast the next day. Something about that extra soak time, the flavours meld together a bit more, total perfection It was certainly not authentic. Made using sainsburys basics madeira sponge (vast improvement on Savoiardi fingers imo but pls don’t come for me) soaked with coffee & amaretto syrup, layered up with cocoa & mascarpone (a bit more traditional as it was whipped up with eggs & sugar) The EKB version is not too different - we’ve built it into a celebration cake format and taken out the raw eggs. I only discovered this cake a few years ago Simnel Cake. Super traditional, it’s classic British baking. They’re eaten and gifted around Mother’s Day and Easter. A light fruit cake (no booze or maturation like you do with Christmas cakes). We add in a mix of currants, sultanas and cherries. The cake is lightly spiced, we throw in some citrus for a lift and almonds (ground & chopped) for some texture And then, the best bit. It has a layer of almond paste running through the middle. Sensational. And, if that wasn’t quite enough, another layer is added on top after baking. We set a blowtorch to this to create a toasted, golden top 🔥 Selling by the slice and as a whole cake for Mother’s Day. Both postal friendly. Perfect with a cup of tea, save me a slice 🫖
What’s next? We’ve done matcha, biscuit, crisp, and hot cross bun tastings. What else should we try? EDIT: we did a @greggs_official one too 😂 Croissants? Doughnuts? Our visit to @shiptonmill 👩🍳 We have been using Shipton flours for many years and last summer we jumped at the chance to finally visit them in person. Priya and I met up early doors, hopped in a Zipcar and drove down to Gloucestershire. We were greeted by John, a miller who has been working at Shipton for 36 years.
